Use CBR for a YouTube Live stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR); choose the recommended bitrate for your codec, resolution and frame rate, then make sure your upload connection can sustain it with headroom. YouTube’s separate guidance for uploading prerecorded files recommends variable bitrate (VBR), but that is a different workflow.
CBR or VBR: what YouTube recommends for Live
YouTube’s live encoder settings specify CBR. That is the setting to choose for a YouTube Live encoder when it is available. The recommendation applies to live ingestion, not to exporting or uploading a prerecorded video file.

YouTube’s upload-encoding guidance recommends VBR for prerecorded uploads. The two recommendations are not contradictory: one is for sending a live stream to YouTube, the other for preparing a file to upload. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and YouTube’s upload encoding guidance.

YouTube states the CBR recommendation but does not explain a specific platform-internal reason or publish a CBR-versus-VBR performance comparison. OBS notes that CBR is required by many streaming services for some hardware-encoding support; that general encoder context is not evidence of YouTube’s particular rationale.

Choose a recommended bitrate for your format
YouTube’s recommended live video bitrates vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are recommendations from its encoder guidance, not results of a comparative quality test.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 / H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
Use the bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually send. YouTube also lists minimum bitrates for supported formats; a minimum is not the same as its recommended setting, so check the current official encoder table for your exact format. Its guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 and AV1, up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (not more than 4 seconds).

Check upload capacity before going live
The encoder’s target bitrate must fit within stable outbound upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate and cautions that a shared network can reduce the bandwidth available to the streaming computer. Check upload speed, not download speed. If you send a primary and backup stream, include both in the total before adding headroom. Read YouTube’s bandwidth guidance.
- Calculate the total: add the bitrate of every stream you intend to send, including a backup feed if used.
- Allow headroom: plan for available outbound capacity at least 20% above that total, as YouTube recommends.
- Test your real setup: run a private or unlisted test using representative motion and audio. YouTube specifically recommends testing with movement and sound similar to the planned stream.
- Monitor stream health: watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the event and respond to warnings rather than assuming a configured bitrate is being delivered reliably.
What to do if the stream is unstable
A configured bitrate that exceeds what the connection can sustain can contribute to delivery problems. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance includes reducing video bitrate as one step; see OBS connection troubleshooting.

- 【Browser-Based Setup in Minutes】 Set up in minutes through any browser — no software, drivers or OS compatibility issues. DHCP is enabled by default to prevent IP address conflicts on your network. Note: basic networking knowledge (IP address, RTSP/RTMP configuration) is recommended for advanced streaming setups.
- 【Compact Design with Flexible Deployment】Palm-sized form factor (approx. 90×54×29mm) fits easily behind monitors, on shelves, or in equipment racks. Low power consumption ensures reliable 24/7 operation for live events, remote monitoring, and digital signage.
- 【Professional Audio & OSD Overlay + 1-Year Warranty】 Supports HDMI embedded audio plus external 3.5mm input. Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
- Dropped frames or unstable connection: verify outbound capacity and whether other devices or applications are using the shared network. If the chosen bitrate is too high for stable capacity, lower it and test again.
- Stream health warnings during a test: retest with the planned audio and motion, confirm the selected format’s recommended bitrate and keyframe interval, and check that the network has the recommended headroom.
- Considering VBR as a fix: do not assume switching from CBR to VBR will solve an under-capacity or unstable connection. YouTube specifies CBR for live ingestion, and the cited guidance does not establish VBR as a workaround.
VBR is not one identical setting in every encoder
Rate-control choices depend on the encoder implementation. For example, OBS’s NVENC documentation describes a “Variable Bitrate with Target Quality” mode with a maximum bitrate. That is a specific OBS/NVENC option, not a universal definition of VBR across encoders. The OBS page says the described additions start with OBS 31.0 and is dated August 21, 2024; consult OBS’s NVENC options documentation for its details.
