Spatial audio recording captures directional or three-dimensional information so playback can make a sound seem to come from a position around the listener. It is not one microphone type or one file format: Ambisonics records a sound field, binaural recording captures (or simulates) the signals intended for two ears, and object-based production keeps sounds as separately positioned elements for a renderer to place later. The listener’s brain works out direction from timing, level and tonal cues at the eardrums, while playback software converts the recording into headphone or loudspeaker signals.

The practical result depends on the capture method, renderer, device and the listener’s anatomy. A generic binaural recording may not put a sound in exactly the same apparent location for everyone, and an Ambisonic recording still needs a decoder that matches the playback setup.

What spatial audio recording actually records

Conventional mono recording stores one channel and stereo stores two channels arranged for a particular left-right presentation. Spatial recording preserves more information about where sound exists, not merely how loud it is in each channel. That information can describe a surrounding sound field, the two ear signals of a particular listening perspective, or separate audio objects with position data.

Apple’s WWDC25 Projected Media Profile session defines Ambisonics as “a technique for recording, mixing, and playing back full-sphere Spatial Audio.” Its important distinction is that an Ambisonic recording is a mathematical representation of a scene rather than a fixed feed for a specific speaker arrangement. A decoder can use the same scene to create headphone, stereo-speaker or multichannel output, within the limits of the recording order and renderer.

Binaural audio takes the opposite approach. It is organized around the two signals that reach a listener’s left and right eardrums. A dummy-head recording captures those signals with microphones positioned where ears would be; software can create a similar result by filtering a source with a head-related transfer function (HRTF). Object-based audio stores individual sounds and their positions so a renderer can calculate the output during playback.

How Ambisonic recording captures a sound field

Microphone arrays and spherical-harmonic components

An Ambisonic microphone or microphone array uses several capsules arranged to sample the sound environment from different directions. Digital signal processing combines those capsule signals into directional components expressed as spherical harmonics. The result represents the sound field around the array rather than a pre-mixed set of left, right, center and surround speaker feeds. Apple describes this process and its full-sphere representation in its WWDC25 Projected Media Profile session.

The number of components is called the Ambisonic order. In Apple’s 2025 explanation, first-order Ambisonics (FOA) uses four components, second-order uses nine and third-order uses 16. Higher order provides more spatial resolution, but the count is a technical property of the capture and does not guarantee that every listener will perceive proportionally better positioning.

Ambisonic order Components What the figure means
First order (FOA) 4 One omnidirectional component plus three directional components in the Apple example; a scene representation, not four speaker channels
Second order 9 More spherical-harmonic information and therefore finer spatial resolution than FOA
Third order 16 Still finer spatial resolution; the number is a component count, not a listener-performance score

Why scene capture is useful in production

Because the recording is not tied to one speaker layout, a post-production system can decode it for the target listening arrangement. A filmmaker can preserve the ambience of a location, then add dialogue or designed effects as separate elements. Apple’s Immersive Video guidance describes Higher Order Ambisonic microphones recording the sonic environment from a camera’s perspective as a spatial bed for additional elements. The same guidance makes clear that spatial capture augments conventional mono and stereo production sound; it does not eliminate the need for those tracks.

How binaural recording creates an apparent location

The two-ear target

When a sound reaches the head, the path to each ear is slightly different. One ear may receive it earlier and at a higher level, while the head, torso and outer ear alter its spectrum. The brain compares those left-right differences and uses them, together with reflections and prior experience, to estimate direction and distance. Binaural recording attempts to preserve the complete pair of signals that would arrive at a listener’s ears from a chosen position.

A classic setup places microphones in a mannequin or “dummy head,” including ear-shaped structures. A software renderer can instead start with a dry source and apply HRTFs that model the filtering caused by a head and ears. The output is two channels intended for the listener’s left and right ears.

Why headphones are normally used

Headphones send each binaural channel directly to its corresponding ear, avoiding the acoustic mixing that occurs when both loudspeakers are heard by both ears. Apple’s Logic Pro guide says binaural playback is best suited to headphones, ideally with signal conditioning that ensures accurate reproduction; see Apple’s overview of binaural panning. Loudspeaker playback is possible with specialized crosstalk-cancellation systems, but ordinary speakers do not automatically preserve the intended ear isolation.

What listeners use to hear direction

Spatial audio does not project a physical sound source into a room. It supplies acoustic cues that the auditory system interprets as a location. The main cues are:

  • Interaural time differences: a sound arriving from one side reaches the nearer ear slightly earlier.
  • Interaural level differences: the head partially shadows the far ear, changing the relative loudness.
  • Spectral shaping: the folds of the outer ear and the head and shoulders boost or attenuate frequencies differently depending on elevation and front-back angle.
  • Room and distance cues: direct-to-reverberant balance, reflections and level changes help the brain judge proximity and enclosure.
  • Consistency over time: when a source moves, a renderer updates these cues so the trajectory remains plausible.

These cues are estimates, not a guarantee of a single perceived point. A listener may hear a binaural source inside the head, slightly outside it, or at an incorrect elevation if the HRTF does not match their anatomy or the playback chain colors the signals.

Why the same recording sounds different to different people

Ear shapes, head width and torso proportions affect the filtering that occurs before sound reaches each eardrum. A dummy head represents an average geometry, while an HRTF is usually measured or modeled for a particular person or a generalized listener. Apple’s Logic Pro documentation specifically notes that differences in ears and head and body proportions change the signals at the eardrum. Consequently, one person may hear a clear sound behind the head while another hears it beside the head or inside the headphones.

Head movement can provide an additional check. If the renderer tracks the listener’s head and keeps a virtual source stable in the room as the head turns, the changing cues help the brain separate external sounds from sounds fixed to the headphones. Without tracking, a binaural scene generally remains fixed relative to the listener’s head.

Object-based spatial audio and immersive playback

In object-based production, a source such as a voice, vehicle or musical instrument remains an independent object with position, size, movement and sometimes distance metadata. A playback renderer places each object for the available device. This allows one mix to adapt to different speaker layouts or to headphones using binaural processing, provided the format and renderer support the metadata.

Apple describes its Apple Spatial Audio Format as a platform-specific container combining object-based, channel-based and Higher Order Ambisonics audio for Apple Vision Pro. Its documentation also describes head-tracked binaural rendering that adapts as the viewer moves. That is an example of one platform’s implementation, not a requirement shared by every spatial format or device.

How to make a spatial recording

The appropriate workflow depends on whether you need a reusable sound field, a fixed headphone perspective or movable objects. These steps outline a practical decision path without assuming a particular brand of hardware.

  1. Define the listening target. Decide whether the audience will use headphones, a speaker array, a head-tracked device or several of these. The target determines the renderer and monitoring method.
  2. Choose the capture method. Use an Ambisonic microphone or microphone array when you need the surrounding environment as a scene. Use ear-level or dummy-head microphones for a fixed binaural viewpoint. Record clean mono or stereo sources separately when you want to position objects in post-production.
  3. Set the Ambisonic order or channel layout. Confirm the microphone’s order and the software’s component order before recording. FOA has four components in the Apple example; higher orders require the corresponding channel count and compatible processing.
  4. Place and orient the array. Keep the array stable, mark its forward direction and avoid blocking capsules with stands, clothing or nearby surfaces. Orientation metadata is essential because a decoder needs to know which component represents which direction.
  5. Capture a clean spatial bed. Record the ambience, room tone and significant movements while monitoring for overload, wind and handling noise. Keep conventional mono or stereo production tracks when dialogue, sync or close detail must remain easy to edit.
  6. Process and mix. Convert capsule signals to the chosen Ambisonic components, or maintain the two ear signals for binaural material. Add separately recorded objects only in a renderer or workstation that understands their positions and the target format.
  7. Render and test the delivery. Decode the scene to headphones and the intended speaker arrangement. Check channel order, orientation, loudness, codec and metadata, then test on more than one listener and playback device because anatomy and compatibility vary.

Do you need special headphones?

You do not need a special headphone model for every form of spatial audio. Any reasonably accurate stereo headphones can reproduce a binaural two-channel file, although frequency response, channel matching and signal processing affect the result. Headphones are particularly suitable because they keep the left and right signals separated.

Ambisonic and object-based files are not normally listened to as their raw component channels. A compatible application first decodes or renders them to binaural headphone signals, a loudspeaker layout or a device-specific spatial mode. If the application lacks that renderer, the listener may hear an unintelligible multichannel track or only a fallback stereo version.

Head tracking is optional and format-dependent. A system that supports it can update the binaural filters as the listener turns, while a fixed renderer leaves the virtual scene attached to the head. Device, operating-system, application, container, codec and playback-mode support all have to line up.

An Apple implementation example (not a universal standard)

Apple’s WWDC25 recording session describes iOS 26 spatial capture as First Order Ambisonics with four spherical-harmonic components: one omnidirectional component and three directional components corresponding to front-back, left-right and up-down. The described spatial media asset includes a stereo compatibility track, a spatial track encoded in Apple Positional Audio Codec (APAC) and metadata used during playback. Apple also describes head-tracked playback on AirPods and rendering through headphones, built-in speakers and external speakers in supported paths. These details apply to Apple’s APIs and media pipeline, not to spatial audio in general; other ecosystems may use different codecs, containers and metadata.

Developers working with current Apple capture APIs can consult “Enhance your app’s audio recording capabilities” from WWDC25 for the iOS 26-era implementation context.

Ambisonics, binaural and object-based audio compared

Approach What is encoded Typical capture or creation Post-production flexibility Playback considerations
Ambisonics A full-sphere sound-field representation Ambisonic microphone or microphone array, converted to spherical-harmonic components Can be decoded for different speaker layouts or binaural output; order limits spatial resolution Requires an Ambisonic decoder and compatible channel order; headphones or speakers can be used after rendering
Binaural Two ear-targeted signals for a chosen listener perspective Dummy-head/ear-level microphones or HRTF-based synthesis Excellent for the captured viewpoint, but repositioning requires new processing or another HRTF Headphones are the normal path; loudspeakers need crosstalk cancellation
Object-based Separate sounds plus position and movement metadata Individual sources positioned in a spatial mixing system Objects can be moved or remixed independently during playback Needs an object-aware renderer; output adapts to the supported device and layout

Common failure modes and fixes

Everything sounds left-right but not above or behind

Check that the file was rendered through a spatial decoder rather than played as ordinary stereo. Confirm the Ambisonic channel order and the array’s forward orientation. For binaural material, an HRTF mismatch can reduce elevation and front-back cues even when the file is technically correct.

The image moves with the listener’s head

This is expected from a fixed binaural render: the signals are attached to the head. Use a renderer with head tracking when the production requires a stable virtual source in the room, and verify that the device and application actually pass tracking data.

A recording works on one device but falls back on another

Spatial playback depends on the container, codec, metadata, operating system, application and output mode. Include a compatible stereo track when the delivery specification calls for one, and test the exact encoded asset—not only the uncompressed master—on each supported path.

The ambience is spatial but dialogue is unclear

Spatial capture is a sound-field bed, not a substitute for close production microphones. Keep dialogue and other critical sources on conventional mono or stereo tracks, then layer them with the spatial environment during post-production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a method for a project

  • Choose Ambisonics for a surrounding location recording, virtual-reality ambience or a camera-perspective bed that must be decoded for more than one playback layout.
  • Choose binaural for a headphone-first experience from a defined listener position, such as a guided scene or intimate field recording.
  • Choose object-based production when sources must move independently or the same mix must adapt to different renderers.
  • Combine methods when an immersive bed needs conventional dialogue, music stems or effects layered on top. Spatial capture and ordinary production tracks serve different jobs.

Bottom line

Spatial audio recording preserves enough directional information for a renderer and the listener’s auditory system to reconstruct a three-dimensional impression. Ambisonics stores a reusable sound field, binaural recording targets two eardrums, and object-based audio stores independently positioned sources. The apparent result is created by interaural timing and level differences, spectral filtering, room cues and—on supported systems—head tracking. Use the capture method that matches the intended playback, provide a compatible renderer and test with multiple listeners: anatomy, hardware and software all influence what “around you” ultimately sounds like.
