Depending on the product, an assistant may use either, both, or neither. Deleting a conversation or switching off one feature does not necessarily erase every saved or connected source.
This guide explains how the distinction works in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, based on their official help documentation checked October 13, 2026. Availability and controls can vary by account, plan, region, product surface, rollout, and workplace policy, so check the settings in your own account.

What’s the difference between chat history and saved memory?
Saved memory is a reusable representation of selected information about you or your preferences. It is meant to carry useful context forward without requiring the assistant to reread an entire conversation each time. The detail may be something you explicitly asked the assistant to remember or something the product selected as useful.
Chat-history reference is the ability to use information from previous conversations as context for a new one. Depending on the product, that can mean the assistant retrieves relevant passages or details from earlier chats, or draws on a changing set of insights from them. The original chats remain conversations in your history; they do not all have to become separate saved-memory entries.

These mechanisms can coexist. A product may retain a short saved detail, refer to older chats when relevant, or provide a per-chat choice that affects whether those sources are used. The terms “memory” and “history” are not used identically across products, so it is more useful to ask what source is being consulted and which control affects it than to rely on a label alone.
- Saved-memory question: What specific detail or synthesized summary is retained for later use?
- History-reference question: Can the assistant consult previous conversations, and under what conditions?
- Deletion question: Which separate stored items, chats, or connected sources need to be removed to stop the information from being available?
OpenAI’s Help Center describes saved memories as details a user explicitly asks ChatGPT to remember or that ChatGPT saves as useful context when the behavior is available. It says these are stored separately from chat history. OpenAI’s product overview also distinguishes saved memories from insights derived from prior chats. Its April 10, 2025 update described ChatGPT memory as becoming more comprehensive by referencing past conversations in addition to saved memories; that is a dated product-history statement, not a guarantee that every current account has the same feature or settings.
For Claude, the official Help Center describes both generated memory from chat history and the ability to search previous conversations for relevant context. For Gemini, Google documents personalization using past Gemini chats under particular eligibility and activity conditions. Those are different implementations, not evidence that all three products retain, retrieve, or display context in the same way.

When history reference is available and enabled, a new prompt can be answered with relevant context from prior chats. That does not mean the assistant necessarily loads every old conversation in full or permanently converts every sentence into memory. The products’ help documentation describes relevance-based use, search, or personalization, not an identical storage or retrieval pipeline across assistants.

- A saved preference or fact may shape the response without the assistant needing to search for the conversation where it came from.
- The assistant may consult past chats and use only information it considers relevant to the current request.
- A product may surface its use of prior chats—for example, Claude can show a tool call and citations linking to the source conversations when it searches.
- If the relevant feature is off, unavailable, or excluded for that account or conversation, the assistant may not have that past-chat context.
Because history-derived information can change as a system updates what it considers useful, it may not behave like a fixed note that you can inspect and edit line by line. A saved-memory control and a past-chat search control therefore answer different questions. If you want to know where an answer came from, ask the product what past-chat information it used where that capability is documented, and inspect the visible citations or tool activity if offered.
How ChatGPT separates saved memories, chat history, and Temporary Chat
Saved memories and Reference chat history
ChatGPT’s Help Center distinguishes saved memories from Reference chat history. Saved memories are kept separately from the chats they came from. Reference chat history, when included in an account’s settings and switched on, lets ChatGPT use relevant information from past conversations to personalize future responses. As OpenAI puts it: “If your settings include Reference chat history, turning it on lets ChatGPT use relevant information from past conversations to personalize future responses.”

Turning off Reference chat history does not, by itself, delete saved memories. OpenAI says information remembered from past chats after Reference chat history is turned off is scheduled for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days. That period applies to this specific history-derived information, not to every kind of ChatGPT data. The original conversations remain unless you delete them separately.
To remove a detail comprehensively, consider the places it might exist: the saved-memory controls, the originating conversation, archived chats, Library files, or connected apps. The exact steps and labels can vary by product surface and account. Deleting only a chat may leave a separately stored saved memory; deleting only a saved memory may not remove the original conversation. Treat each as a separate object to check.
Temporary Chat: a per-conversation choice
Temporary Chat offers a choice before the first message: Personalized or Unpersonalized. In a Personalized Temporary Chat, ChatGPT can use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins. In an Unpersonalized Temporary Chat, it does not use those. Neither choice creates or updates memories while the conversation remains temporary.

OpenAI says it may keep a copy of a Temporary Chat for up to 30 days for safety. This is a specific safety-related retention period, not a promise that all data associated with every ChatGPT conversation is deleted after 30 days. Saving a Temporary Chat changes its status to a regular conversation, after which ordinary account settings apply. If the conversation must remain temporary, do not save it as a regular chat.

A choice about personalization should not be taken as an answer about whether a conversation is retained for safety or used under another account setting.
Can Claude search previous conversations?
Yes, when the feature is available and enabled. Anthropic’s Claude Help Center says: “You can prompt Claude to search through your previous conversations to find relevant information across sessions and reference specific details when needed.” When Claude performs this search, the user can see a tool call and citations linking to the originating chats. That makes the search process more visible than a product that simply uses history for personalization without surfacing source-chat citations.
Claude also has generated memory from chat history. Its account-level memory setting can be switched off, and a user can disable memory for an individual chat before sending its first message. That per-chat choice does not remove the chat from history: it remains there and may still be found by searches launched from other chats. If you need a conversation excluded from history and later past-chat search, Claude’s incognito chats are not saved to chat history and are excluded from subsequent past-chat search.
Claude’s memory can be reviewed, edited, or deleted in its memory controls or through chat. Do not assume that deleting a conversation necessarily deletes a distinct memory derived from it, or that deleting a memory item necessarily deletes its source conversation. Anthropic’s documentation describes these as distinct controls in some experiences, and available behavior can vary across rollouts, plans, platforms, and organization settings.

Does Gemini remember past chats automatically?
Google documents a feature called personalization with memory of past Gemini chats. It is not universally available or automatically enabled for every Gemini user. The stated eligibility conditions are that the user is at least 18, is signed in to a personal Google Account, and has Keep Activity enabled. Google says it is not available for work, school, or supervised accounts, and does not work in certain surfaces such as Gems or Live chats. A text chat can, however, reference a past Gemini Live conversation.
Google’s documentation points users to Memory in Personal Intelligence settings to turn the feature off. To check whether past chats informed a response, Google suggests asking Gemini: “Did you use any info from past chats?” The answer may help identify whether history was used, but it does not replace checking the account’s settings or reviewing the underlying chat and connected sources.
Deletion can take a short delay to affect personalization. There is also an important connected-app distinction: if information came from an app connected to Gemini, Google instructs users to delete the relevant chats and disconnect that app. Removing only the conversation may leave information accessible through the connection, while disconnecting only the app may leave relevant information in the chat history.
How the three assistants compare
The table describes documented behaviors, not a claim that every user will see the same controls. Product availability and labels can change, and an account may be subject to workspace or regional restrictions.

The products do not publish a comparable recall-accuracy statistic or a shared memory-capacity measure in the cited help materials. A feature comparison therefore cannot establish that one assistant remembers more accurately or consistently than another. The practical difference is in the documented controls, eligibility, visibility, and deletion behavior.

Possibly. A chat and information saved or derived from that chat can be separate items. The answer depends on the product and on where the detail remains available.
- ChatGPT: Deleting a chat alone may not delete a separate saved memory. Turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days, but the source chats remain unless deleted independently. Saved memories require their own review and removal.
- Claude: Memory items and underlying conversations can have distinct controls. A conversation with memory off can still remain in history and may be found by later searches from other conversations; incognito chats are the documented exception for history and later search.
- Gemini: Deleting the chat may not remove access to the same information through a connected app. Google advises deleting the relevant chats and disconnecting the app when both sources are involved; personalization may take a short delay to reflect deletion.
Before deleting, identify the source: a saved note, a prior conversation, an app connection, or more than one of these. Afterward, check the corresponding controls rather than treating one delete action as a universal eraser. Also distinguish deleting data used for personalization from safety retention or training controls, which are governed separately.
How to stop an assistant from using past chats
Use the control that matches the source you want to exclude. A general “memory off” setting may not disable every kind of history reference, and a temporary or incognito conversation may have different consequences from disabling an account-level feature.

In ChatGPT
- Review the account’s memory settings for saved memories and Reference chat history. Their controls affect different sources.
- To prevent past-chat reference for future conversations, turn off Reference chat history if that control is available. OpenAI says history-derived information is scheduled for deletion within 30 days; original chats remain unless you delete them.
- Review and remove saved-memory items separately if you do not want them used. Delete the originating chat as well if you want to remove the source conversation.
- For one new conversation, start Temporary Chat and choose Unpersonalized before the first message if you do not want it to use memory, custom instructions, or plugins. Choosing Personalized allows use of existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins, but neither mode creates or updates memories while the chat remains temporary.
- Check other relevant sources, including archived chats, Library files, and connected apps. A detail can remain available from a source other than the chat you just removed.
In Claude
- Use Claude’s memory controls to review, edit, delete, or switch off account-level memory where available.
- For a single conversation, turn memory off before sending its first message. This does not remove the conversation from history or guarantee that searches from another chat will not find it.
- Use an incognito chat when you want the conversation excluded from chat history and later past-chat search.
- If you want to remove both the reusable memory and its source material, review memory controls and the relevant conversation separately. Check organization or account availability if a control is missing.
In Gemini
- Check whether the account meets Google’s conditions for past-chat personalization: age 18 or older, a personal Google Account, and Keep Activity enabled. The feature is not available for work, school, or supervised accounts or in certain surfaces.
- To stop this personalization, turn Memory off in Personal Intelligence settings.
- If a response seems to use prior chats, ask Gemini, “Did you use any info from past chats?”
- If information came from a connected app, delete relevant chats and disconnect that app. Removing one source alone may leave the information accessible through the other.
- Allow for a short delay before expecting deletion to affect personalization.
What these controls do not tell you
Memory and history settings answer a limited question: whether an assistant can use particular information to personalize or inform a response. They do not, on their own, establish every retention, safety, or model-training rule that applies to an account. For example, OpenAI’s stated up-to-30-day Temporary Chat safety copy and its within-30-days schedule for history-derived information after Reference chat history is turned off are narrow, separately described cases—not universal deletion deadlines for all content.
Nor do these settings guarantee that an assistant will always recall a relevant detail or use it in a particular response. The official help materials describe product capabilities and controls, not a cross-platform recall benchmark. If a consequential answer depends on a fact from an earlier conversation, restate or verify the fact in the current chat rather than assuming the assistant retrieved it correctly.
Which setting should you choose?
- Keep helpful continuity: Leave the relevant memory or history-reference feature enabled if you want personalization, and review what the product lets you inspect or edit.
- Keep one conversation isolated: Use the per-conversation option where documented—Unpersonalized Temporary Chat in ChatGPT or memory-off-before-first-message in Claude. Use Claude incognito if excluding the chat from history and later search is important.
- Stop use of prior Gemini chats: Turn off Memory in Personal Intelligence settings, if available for the account.
- Remove a particular detail: Check saved memory, source chat, and connected sources independently. Then allow for any documented processing delay.
- Need a workplace account or a missing control: Availability may be governed by plan, region, product surface, rollout, or organization policy. Check the account’s official help materials or ask the workspace administrator rather than assuming a control exists.
