How to Keep Extensions, Keybindings, and Settings When Changing Code Editors

A practical migration guide to separating project and user settings, preserving editor profiles or settings archives, using supported importers, and checking for gaps.

To move to a new code editor without rebuilding your workflow from memory, first separate project settings from personal editor settings, make a portable inventory or backup, use the destination’s importer or sync feature where available, and then verify the result in a real project. Some editor pairs support specific imports; there is no universal, lossless transfer for every extension, shortcut, or preference.

What transfers—and what may not

A code-editor setup is a collection of different kinds of data, not one interchangeable bundle. It can include personal preferences, keyboard shortcuts, extensions or plugins, themes, snippets, and project-specific configuration. A destination editor may recognize some categories and not others, and an extension for one editor is not automatically usable as a plugin in another.

Before choosing a transfer method, identify the scope of each item. For example, Visual Studio Code (VS Code) keeps workspace settings in a .vscode directory at the project root, separately from user settings. Workspace settings belong to a project; user settings belong to your editor setup. Copying or syncing one does not necessarily carry the other.

What you want to preserve Where to look Migration consideration
User settings The editor’s user-level settings or a saved profile Check whether the destination imports these settings or whether you will need to recreate some of them.
Project settings Project files or folders, such as VS Code’s .vscode directory Keep project configuration with the project and check whether the new editor recognizes it.
Keybindings The source editor’s shortcuts or keymap A destination may offer a familiar keymap, but verify frequently used commands rather than assuming every shortcut maps.
Extensions or plugins The source editor’s installed-extension or plugin list Check each item for a destination equivalent; an importer’s ability to list or import extensions does not establish that the same extension runs in the destination.
Other workflow details Snippets, themes, UI customizations, profiles, and project-specific files Confirm separately whether the source export or destination importer includes each category.

This separation also helps diagnose a seemingly incomplete move: a preference can be absent because it was project-specific, excluded from sync, unsupported by the importer, or tied to an extension that has no destination equivalent.

Choose a transfer method for your editor pair

There are three useful patterns: sync between installations of the same editor, export a profile or settings archive for a deliberate handoff, or use a destination editor’s importer when it explicitly supports your source. The supported categories matter more than the word “import”: check what the tool says it moves.

Approach Best fit What the documentation establishes What you still need to check
VS Code Settings Sync Moving between VS Code installations Microsoft documents sync for user settings, keyboard shortcuts, installed extensions, and profiles. Sync has exclusions and limitations for remote windows. Review excluded items and account/sign-in state; extensions are not synchronized to or from remote windows such as SSH, a dev container, or WSL.
VS Code profile export Carrying a deliberate VS Code setup as a separate handoff VS Code profiles collect settings, extensions, and UI customizations; a profile can be exported to a local file or a GitHub gist. Check the exported profile’s contents and whether the destination is another VS Code installation. A profile is not a general cross-editor format.
VS Code to IntelliJ IDEA import Moving from VS Code to IntelliJ IDEA JetBrains documents an importer that can include a keymap, UI theme, installed extensions, and recent projects. IntelliJ IDEA also offers a VSCode keymap. Treat these as supported import categories, not a guarantee that VS Code extensions become IntelliJ plugins or that every setting has a match.
JetBrains Backup and Sync or ZIP export/import Moving settings between JetBrains IDEs JetBrains documents account-based Backup and Sync and manual ZIP export/import for settings including keymaps, themes, editor settings, code styles, and enabled or disabled plugins. Verify project data and credentials separately, and confirm which settings categories are included in your particular transfer.

These options are not interchangeable. Sync is convenient for supported items across signed-in installations of the same editor; a profile or ZIP gives you a distinct artifact to carry; a cross-editor importer is useful only for the categories and source/destination pair it names.

Make an inventory before you switch

Do this while the old editor is still available and your usual projects still open. A short inventory gives you a recovery list if an import omits something, and it helps distinguish preferences you actually rely on from old settings you do not need to carry forward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the source and destination. Write down the editor and version you are leaving, the editor you are moving to, and whether this is a same-editor move or a cross-editor move. The exact pair determines whether sync, a profile, or an importer is relevant.
  2. Separate personal setup from project configuration. Note user-level preferences and shortcuts separately from settings stored in each project. For VS Code projects, inspect the project-root .vscode directory; do not assume it is included in a user-settings sync.
  3. List the items you actively use. Record extensions or plugins, keybindings, snippets, themes, UI customizations, and any editor-specific workflows you depend on. Include project-level files that affect how a project behaves.
  4. Mark what is essential. Identify shortcuts and extensions you need every day, and note what each extension is for. This makes it easier to find a destination equivalent when the original extension cannot transfer.
  5. Identify the scope of profiles and sync. If your source editor uses profiles, note which profile contains the setup you want. If you use sync, review its exclusions and whether the source installation is a remote window.
  6. Keep a separate record of sensitive or external dependencies. Do not treat an editor settings transfer as proof that credentials, project data, or external service configuration have moved. Handle those through the appropriate project or account process.

For the inventory, a plain text checklist is enough. The goal is not to reproduce every setting by hand; it is to make omissions visible and give yourself a way to test the new setup.

Move between VS Code installations

Use Settings Sync for a continuing setup

Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code documentation describes Settings Sync as a way to share settings, keyboard shortcuts, and installed extensions across VS Code installations on different machines. It also supports profiles. This is the most direct option when both the source and destination are VS Code and you want supported items to stay aligned rather than carry a one-time file.

  1. Choose the intended profile. If you use more than one VS Code profile, identify which one has the extensions and customizations you want. Profiles group settings, extensions, and UI customizations; syncing the wrong profile will not reproduce the setup you intended.
  2. Review sync configuration before relying on it. Check which items are included and whether anything is excluded. A missing item may be excluded rather than broken, so inspect the configuration before manually recreating it.
  3. Check whether the source is a remote window. VS Code does not synchronize extensions to or from a remote window such as SSH, a dev container, or WSL. If your normal work happens there, do not assume the remote extension set will appear on the destination through sync.
  4. Sign in and enable Settings Sync in the VS Code installations you intend to use. Follow the current Settings Sync controls in VS Code and confirm that sync is active for the relevant installations. The precise interface can change, so use the product’s current labels rather than relying on an older menu path.
  5. Allow the destination to receive the supported items, then inspect it. Check your preferences, shortcuts, extensions, and profile customizations against the inventory. Sync is a transfer mechanism for documented categories, not a substitute for validating a working setup.

Export a profile when you want a portable handoff

A VS Code profile can be exported to a local file or a GitHub gist. This is useful when you want a discrete profile artifact rather than relying only on ongoing sync. Profiles are still a VS Code feature: exporting one does not turn it into a cross-editor settings format.

  1. Select the profile you intend to move. Check that it contains the relevant settings, extensions, and UI customizations, rather than exporting a different profile by mistake.
  2. Export the profile. Choose the local-file or GitHub-gist option provided by VS Code. If you choose a file, keep it somewhere you can access from the destination installation.
  3. Import or apply the profile in the destination VS Code installation. Use VS Code’s profile controls and inspect what the imported profile contains. Do not assume it includes project files stored outside the profile.
  4. Test the profile with a representative project. Confirm that the expected shortcuts, settings, and extensions behave as needed, and check project-specific configuration separately.

Use a profile export for a deliberate move or reproducible handoff; use Settings Sync when the goal is to keep supported VS Code installations aligned. You can use the inventory with either method to catch items that fall outside the feature’s documented scope.

Move from VS Code to IntelliJ IDEA

IntelliJ IDEA is a documented example of a cross-editor move with an importer. JetBrains says its VS Code import can include a keymap, UI theme, installed extensions, and recent projects. The import is available during first launch, and the JetBrains guide also describes a manual import route later. Because this is a named importer, its documented categories are a better guide than assuming all settings transfer.

  1. Decide whether to import during first launch or later. If IntelliJ IDEA is already set up, use the manual import route described in JetBrains’ migration guide rather than expecting the first-launch prompt to reappear.
  2. Select the VS Code source and the categories you want to bring across. Review the listed keymap, UI theme, installed extensions, and recent-project options. Choose only what is relevant to your new setup.
  3. Choose the VSCode keymap if familiar shortcuts are the priority. IntelliJ IDEA offers a VSCode keymap, which can preserve a more familiar shortcut layout. It does not establish that every VS Code keybinding has an identical IntelliJ IDEA action.
  4. Check extension compatibility individually. The importer’s ability to include installed extensions does not mean that VS Code extensions run as IntelliJ IDEA plugins. Find a destination-native equivalent for essential capabilities where one exists, or decide how to replace that workflow.
  5. Open a project and verify the imported result. Check the keymap, theme, relevant plugins, and project behavior rather than treating the import completing as proof that every part of the source setup has a destination match.

Keep project-specific files in view during the move. The importer’s documented categories do not establish that all project data, local configuration, or credentials have been transferred.

Move settings between JetBrains IDEs

For a move within the JetBrains IDE family, JetBrains documents two routes: account-based Backup and Sync and manual settings ZIP export/import. The documented settings categories include keymaps, themes, color schemes, editor settings, code styles, and enabled or disabled plugins. Choose based on whether you want an account-based sync or a discrete archive.

Use Backup and Sync

  1. Use the JetBrains account-based Backup and Sync option. Sign in to the account associated with the settings transfer and follow the IDE’s current Backup and Sync controls.
  2. Check which settings categories are selected or supported. Compare the available categories with your inventory, especially keymaps, editor settings, code styles, themes, and plugin states.
  3. Enable or connect the destination IDE and verify the result. Inspect the transferred configuration in the destination before relying on it for daily work.

Use a ZIP for a discrete transfer

  1. Export settings from the source IDE to a ZIP file. Use the IDE’s settings export function and preserve the archive as a separate backup.
  2. Transfer the ZIP to the destination machine or IDE environment. Keep the archive available until you have confirmed the new configuration works.
  3. Import the ZIP in the destination IDE. Use the settings import control provided by that IDE and review which categories it applies.
  4. Validate keymaps, themes, editor settings, code styles, and plugin states. These are among the categories JetBrains documents for settings export/import; check project data and credentials through their own routes.

Both methods concern settings categories described by JetBrains. Do not infer from a successful settings transfer that a project’s files or credentials are included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate the new editor and repair gaps

An import or sync should be treated as the start of validation, not the finish line. A short, deliberate test is more reliable than discovering a missing shortcut or plugin during a deadline-sensitive task.

  1. Open a representative project. Use a project that exercises the languages, tools, and project configuration you rely on. Check that it opens as expected before tuning preferences around it.
  2. Test essential shortcuts in context. Try the commands you use most, such as navigation, search, editing, and any project-specific workflow. If an imported keymap is close but not exact, change only the shortcuts you need and keep a note of those changes.
  3. Check each critical extension or plugin. Confirm that the destination has the needed capability, not merely a similarly named item. If the source extension has no destination equivalent, identify a replacement workflow or accept that the capability will differ.
  4. Inspect themes and interface choices. Verify that the UI theme, color scheme, and other visible customizations are present and usable. These are often easier to notice than a missing preference but still need a check.
  5. Check project-specific configuration separately. Review project settings such as VS Code’s .vscode directory, and confirm that the destination editor either uses them or has an intentional replacement.
  6. Keep the old setup or export until satisfied. Retain access to the source editor and your export or profile while checking the destination. That gives you a reference for repairing gaps without relying on memory.

When something is missing, diagnose by category: first check whether it was user-level or project-level; then whether it was excluded from sync or outside the remote-window coverage; then whether the importer lists that category; finally, whether the destination has a compatible feature at all. This order prevents you from repeatedly retrying an import for a setting it was never designed to carry.

Common migration mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming one settings file contains everything. User preferences, workspace settings, extensions, and project files have different scopes and may use different transfer mechanisms.
  • Assuming extension lists equal extension compatibility. An imported list is not proof that the source extension runs in the destination editor.
  • Skipping exclusions and remote limits. Sync may omit excluded items, and VS Code extensions are not synchronized to or from SSH, dev-container, or WSL remote windows.
  • Confusing a same-editor profile with a universal format. VS Code profiles package supported VS Code customizations; the documented IntelliJ IDEA importer is a separate, specific cross-editor path.
  • Deleting the source setup immediately. Keep your old configuration or export until the project and essential workflows have been checked in the new editor.
