SpaceX Starship is a two-stage launch system: the Starship spacecraft, which serves as the upper stage, and the Super Heavy booster. SpaceX is developing both stages for reuse and says the system is intended to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, and Mars. Those are design goals, not routine operational capabilities: Starship remains in flight testing.
What is SpaceX Starship?
“Starship” can refer to the spacecraft alone or, more broadly, to the combined Starship and Super Heavy system. Super Heavy is the first-stage booster; Starship is the upper stage and spacecraft. SpaceX describes the pair as a transportation system designed to carry crew and cargo. Its current Starship overview presents the system’s destinations as Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

SpaceX’s design specifications
SpaceX lists a combined system height of 124 metres (407 feet) and a diameter of 9 metres (29.5 feet). The company gives Starship itself a height of 52 metres (171 feet), a 9-metre (29.5-foot) diameter, and propellant capacity of 1,600 tonnes. It lists design payload capacity above 100 metric tonnes to orbit in a fully reusable configuration. These are company specifications, not independently verified records of routine commercial service.
Is Starship fully reusable?
SpaceX is designing both stages to return to the launch site and be caught for reuse, with rapid turnaround as an objective. The company’s planned approach is central to its vision for frequent, lower-cost transport. But “fully reusable” describes the intended architecture; it should not be read as evidence that the complete system is already operating routinely with those turnaround capabilities.

How will Starship get to Mars?
SpaceX’s Mars architecture depends on refueling in orbit. Tanker Starships would transfer propellant to the mission vehicle in low Earth orbit before it departs for Mars. This allows the departing spacecraft to begin its journey with more propellant than it could carry from the launch pad while also transporting its payload. Orbital propellant transfer is therefore a key dependency of the company’s Mars plan, not a capability established here as routine service.
Entry, landing, and surface plans
SpaceX’s Mars page describes atmospheric entry at 7.5 kilometres per second and says the heatshield is designed for multiple entries. It also anticipates harsher conditions at Mars because of atomic oxygen. These are engineering descriptions from SpaceX; they do not demonstrate a successful Mars entry or landing.

For early human missions, SpaceX says explorers would survey local resources, prepare landing surfaces, establish power generation, and build habitats. The company presents producing methane and oxygen from local resources as a longer-term part of its vision. These are planned objectives, not confirmed accomplishments.

When will Starship go to Mars?
SpaceX says cargo flights to the Martian surface for research, development, and exploration will begin no earlier than 2028. That is the company’s stated earliest timing, not a confirmed launch date or independent assessment of readiness. SpaceX also lists a rate of $100 million per metric ton for Mars cargo; this is a company-stated price, not an independently validated market rate.

Where flight testing stands
SpaceX’s May 12, 2026 update introduced its V3 architecture and said the timing of demonstrations would depend on progress in upcoming flight tests. In its report on Flight 13, the company said the flight launched on July 24, 2026, was the second flight of V3 vehicles and the first Starship flight to deploy next-generation Starlink V3 satellites.
SpaceX’s missions page listed “Starship Flight 14” with a date of September 28, 2026. The available listing does not establish the flight’s outcome. For later status, consult SpaceX’s missions page; flight listings can change as testing progresses.

How to interpret Starship’s published capabilities
SpaceX is the primary source for its vehicle specifications, architecture, schedule, and flight reports. Its pages explain what the company is designing and planning, while flight tests provide evidence about development progress. Keep those categories distinct: listed capacity is a design specification, a Mars date is a stated plan, and a reported launch is a flight milestone. None alone establishes that regular, fully reusable Mars transport is in operation.
