To find out whether your TV supports HDMI ARC, check its HDMI-port labels for “ARC” or “eARC,” then confirm the port specifications in the manual or official support page for your exact TV model. A missing label does not prove ARC is unavailable: HDMI Licensing Administrator says ARC ports are recommended, but not required, to carry that marking.
Check the TV’s HDMI ports
- Look at the labels. Inspect the HDMI sockets on the TV and any port diagram in its setup documentation. A socket marked “ARC” or “eARC” is the first indication of return-audio support. Sony recommends checking the port specifications in the manual: Sony’s guide to identifying an ARC or eARC port.
- Find the exact model number. If no socket is marked, look up the model on the manufacturer’s official support site and check its manual or specifications. HDMI Licensing Administrator explains that the ARC marking is recommended rather than mandatory, so the label alone cannot settle the question: HDMI Licensing Administrator’s ARC guidance.
- Confirm which socket supports ARC. The manual or port diagram should identify the designated HDMI port. Do not assume that every HDMI socket on the TV can send audio back to an external device.
What to check on the soundbar or receiver
For an ARC connection, the audio device must also support ARC. Connect the TV’s designated ARC or eARC port to the corresponding ARC or eARC port on the soundbar or receiver, following the manufacturers’ connection diagrams. A regular HDMI port on either device is not automatically an ARC port. Sony’s soundbar connection instructions and Samsung’s Samsung Smart TV ARC/eARC guide illustrate the need to use the designated ports.

The cited HDMI Licensing Administrator guidance says HDMI cables support ARC when connected to ARC-enabled devices. Its guidance does not establish a need for a special cable as a prerequisite; first verify that both devices support the feature and that the cable is connected to the correct ports.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf ARC is supported but there is no sound
- Check the TV’s sound output. Select the connected external audio device or the relevant HDMI audio option in the TV’s sound settings. The exact label and menu location vary by model.
- Check HDMI-CEC. ARC operation can depend on the devices’ control settings. Samsung calls HDMI-CEC “Anynet+”; menu paths differ by TV series and year. LG’s 55LF5700/65LF5700 owner manual provides a model-specific example of enabling ARC through a CEC control menu. Use the instructions for your own model rather than assuming those menu paths apply to every TV.
- Recheck the port match. Make sure the cable joins the TV’s designated ARC/eARC port and the corresponding port on the soundbar or receiver.
If your TV does not support ARC
If the exact model’s specifications show no ARC-capable HDMI port, optical digital audio may be an alternative if both the TV and audio device have compatible optical connections. Sony also describes using another audio cable when an optical connection is not possible; check the instructions for both devices to determine which connection they support.
