Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →skydrive.exe is the legacy name of Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud-storage client. Microsoft renamed SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro to OneDrive and OneDrive for Business on January 27, 2014, so a current Windows installation normally runs onedrive.exe, not skydrive.exe.
A filename does not prove that a program is genuine. Treat an old SkyDrive executable as legitimate only after checking its complete path, Microsoft digital signature, origin and behavior. If it is in a temporary, Downloads or randomly named folder, lacks a valid signature, or makes unexplained network connections, do not launch it: scan and quarantine it. The supported repair path is to use the current OneDrive client, update Windows, reset OneDrive, check management policies and reinstall when necessary.

What skydrive.exe was
SkyDrive was Microsoft’s cloud-storage service and its Windows synchronization client. The desktop program used the name skydrive.exe in the period when the service was branded SkyDrive. On January 27, 2014, Microsoft announced that SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro would become OneDrive and OneDrive for Business. Existing accounts and content were intended to continue through the rename; the change was primarily a service and product-name transition.

Therefore, seeing skydrive.exe today usually means one of four things: an old installation or backup remains, a shortcut or startup entry points to a legacy component, another program has copied or renamed a file, or a malicious file is impersonating the old name. The name alone cannot distinguish those cases.

Is skydrive.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. A historical SkyDrive binary can be authentic, but any executable with that name can also be replaced, downloaded from an unofficial source or deliberately named to look like Microsoft software. Microsoft’s published support pages do not provide one hash list covering every historical SkyDrive build, so verify the copy on your own computer.
Check the complete file path
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Open the Details tab. If you only see a simplified view, select More details first.
- Find
skydrive.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. - Write down the full path before taking any action. A Microsoft installation folder is more plausible than a user’s Downloads folder, a temporary directory or a folder with a random name, but location by itself is not proof.
If Task Manager closes the process before you can inspect it, search for the filename in File Explorer and use Properties on every copy you find. Multiple copies deserve separate checks.
Verify the digital signature
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures. Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and that the signer is Microsoft. Check the signature status after selecting each listed signature if more than one appears.
- On the General and Details tabs, compare the product and description with a legacy Microsoft cloud-storage client. An unrelated publisher, a missing signature or a signature that Windows cannot validate is a reason to stop.
A valid signature is strong evidence of publisher authenticity, not a guarantee that the file is appropriate for your system or free of every possible problem. A file copied from another computer can be genuine but obsolete, and a file with no signature should not be launched merely because its name looks familiar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAssess behavior before allowing it to run
- Ask whether you intentionally installed SkyDrive or used a computer that was upgraded from an older Windows installation.
- Note whether the process starts only when a legacy synchronization folder is used or starts repeatedly without any OneDrive account configured.
- Be cautious about unexplained outbound connections, high CPU or disk use, pop-ups, new scheduled tasks and changes to browser or security settings.
- Do not open an unsigned copy to “see what it does.” Use Windows Security or another trusted security product to scan it first.
If the path, signature and behavior do not agree, end the process, isolate the file with your security software and investigate the computer as a possible unwanted-software incident. Do not download a replacement named SkyDrive.exe from a file-sharing site.
Why skydrive.exe may still be running
Legacy software survived an upgrade
Older Windows installations, cloned disks and restored backups can retain a SkyDrive-era executable even after the service changed names. A startup entry may continue to call the old filename while the supported client is no longer present. This is common enough to explain a sighting, but it should still be verified rather than assumed safe.
An old shortcut or scheduled entry points to it
Check Settings > Apps > Startup and the Startup tab in Task Manager for entries that mention SkyDrive. You can also inspect shortcuts in the Startup folder by pressing Win+R, entering shell:startup, and reviewing the targets. Remove only entries you have identified; deleting an unknown startup item can disable unrelated software.

OneDrive terminology is being confused with SkyDrive
People sometimes search for SkyDrive because that is the name remembered from an older computer. Current Microsoft instructions, installers and reset commands use OneDrive names. If you need synchronization, install the current OneDrive client rather than trying to revive an unverified legacy binary.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An impostor chose a familiar name
Malware and potentially unwanted programs can use names associated with well-known software. An unexpected location, invalid signature or behavior unrelated to file synchronization is more significant than the spelling of the filename. Scan first and do not grant administrative permission to investigate an unknown copy.
Before repairing anything
- Save open documents and note whether files in the local sync folder show a completed, pending or error status.
- Confirm that important files exist at OneDrive.com or in another backup before uninstalling, resetting or changing permissions.
- Record the exact error code and when it appears: at sign-in, during startup, while opening a file, during an update or when Files On-Demand is enabled.
- If the computer belongs to an employer or school, identify its support contact. Organization policies can intentionally prevent OneDrive from starting.
- Do not delete a legacy executable until you know which shortcut, service or account uses it and have a replacement plan.
Manual fixes, in the safest order
1. Scan a suspicious copy
For a file that fails the path or signature check, right-click it in File Explorer and choose the Windows Security scan option if available. If you cannot determine whether the file is safe, run a full scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. Quarantine detections and restart Windows before continuing. Do not restore a detection simply because the filename resembles an old Microsoft component.
2. Install the current OneDrive client from Microsoft
Use Microsoft’s official OneDrive download page and the installer named OneDriveSetup.exe. Avoid search results that offer a standalone skydrive.exe, “cracked” installer or DLL bundle. The current installer is the supported replacement for a missing or damaged legacy client.
After installation, sign in with the account that owns the files and check the folder location and synchronization status. If you do not need synchronization, you can leave OneDrive unconfigured rather than keeping an old SkyDrive process active.
3. Update Windows and OneDrive
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates and restart when requested.
- Open OneDrive and allow it to update. If it reports that an update is required, close other OneDrive windows and retry after Windows has finished updating.
- When troubleshooting Files On-Demand, update your antivirus product as well. Microsoft identifies outdated Windows or OneDrive components and legacy antivirus file-system filters as possible causes.
Do not interrupt an update by deleting the OneDrive folder or killing the installer process unless Windows reports that it is stuck and you have recorded the error.

4. Reset OneDrive
A reset rebuilds the local OneDrive configuration without deleting files stored online. Press Win+R and run:
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /reset
Installation paths vary by Windows version and deployment method. If that command reports that the file cannot be found, locate the installed onedrive.exe in File Explorer and run the same /reset argument with that full path. For example, place the quoted path followed by a space and /reset in the Run box if the path contains spaces.
The cloud icon may disappear briefly. Wait several minutes, then launch onedrive.exe from the Start menu. Sign in if prompted and allow the folder to rescan. A reset is reversible and is a lower-risk first response to startup or synchronization problems than editing the registry.

5. Check organization policy blocks
On a work or school computer, an administrator can use Group Policy to prevent OneDrive from starting or to restrict file-storage features. If there is no sign-in prompt, OneDrive never starts, or settings are greyed out, ask the administrator to check the OneDrive policy configuration. Do not bypass a managed policy with registry edits.
Registry changes can cause serious problems when a value is mistyped or applied to the wrong user or computer. If an administrator confirms that a policy is intentional, the correct fix is to follow that organization’s storage procedure, not to download a legacy SkyDrive executable.
6. Repair permissions for the affected folder
Permission errors can stop synchronization even when the executable itself is healthy. Right-click the affected file or folder, choose Properties > Security, and review the entries for your Windows account. You normally need permission to read, create and modify files in the local sync folder. If the folder is owned by another account or inherited permissions are broken, ask an administrator to correct ownership and access rather than granting broad permissions to everyone.

After a targeted permission change, restart OneDrive or Windows and test one small file. If only one folder fails, compare its Security settings with a working sibling folder. Do not change permissions on the entire system drive to solve a single synchronization error.

7. Reinstall OneDrive when repair and reset fail
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on an older Windows release).
- Select Microsoft OneDrive and choose Uninstall where the option is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Download and run the current
OneDriveSetup.exefrom Microsoft, then sign in and select the intended folder.
Microsoft states that uninstalling or disabling OneDrive does not delete files stored in OneDrive online; those remain accessible at OneDrive.com. Local files that have not finished syncing are a separate concern, so verify their status and copy important unsynced work elsewhere before uninstalling. Reinstalling also removes reliance on an unsupported SkyDrive-era binary.

Error 0x80070005
Microsoft associates 0x80070005 with an installation or update problem. First install available Windows updates. Then open the local OneDrive update folder under your user profile, locate OneDriveSetup.exe if it is present, and run it. If the setup file is missing or fails again, uninstall and reinstall the current client from Microsoft rather than searching for a SkyDrive replacement. Check folder permissions if the message specifically mentions access denied.
Files On-Demand cannot start
Update Windows and OneDrive, then update the installed antivirus program. Legacy antivirus filters can interfere with the cloud-files feature. Restart after both updates and test a small online-only file. If the feature still fails, reset OneDrive and review whether a work or school policy disables Files On-Demand.
No sign-in prompt or no synchronization
Confirm that onedrive.exe, not an unverified skydrive.exe, is installed and starting. Check the account icon and folder location, then reset the client. On managed devices, a Group Policy prevention rule is a possible cause; the administrator must verify or change it.

Permission or access-denied messages
Review the Security tab on the specific file or folder, close applications that may be locking it, and restart OneDrive or Windows. If only files owned by another user fail, obtain the owner’s or administrator’s help. Avoid taking ownership of system folders or changing permissions globally.

What not to do
- Do not assume every
skydrive.exebelongs to Microsoft because the spelling is familiar. - Do not download a legacy executable from an unofficial archive to replace a missing client.
- Do not disable antivirus protection merely to make Files On-Demand start. Update the security product and investigate filter compatibility instead.
- Do not edit Group Policy or the registry on a managed computer without authorization.
- Do not delete the local sync folder while troubleshooting; it may contain files that have not reached OneDrive.com.
- Do not interpret a successful reset as proof that an unsigned executable was safe. Safety and synchronization are separate questions.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while offering settings tweaks, cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. Frequently asked questions
Can I simply delete skydrive.exe?
Not before checking its path, signature and role. If it is an unsigned or clearly unrelated file, quarantine it with security software. If it is a genuine legacy component, replace the old client with current OneDrive first and remove obsolete startup entries only after confirming that synchronization no longer depends on them.
Will uninstalling OneDrive erase my cloud files?
No. Microsoft says files stored online remain available at OneDrive.com after OneDrive is uninstalled or disabled. Protect local files that are still pending synchronization before removing the client.
Why does my computer show skydrive.exe when Microsoft now says OneDrive?
The computer may contain a leftover legacy installation, an old shortcut or a restored system image. It may also contain an impostor. The full path and Microsoft signature determine which explanation is credible.
Should I search for a SkyDrive download?
No. Use Microsoft’s current OneDrive installer, OneDriveSetup.exe. A standalone SkyDrive download from an unknown site is not a supported repair and can introduce an untrusted executable.
Is a valid Microsoft signature enough?
It is an important authenticity check, but also confirm the path, expected product description and behavior. A genuine old binary can be unsupported or incompatible with current Windows, and an unrelated file with a similar name can fail the signature check.
