simpsons.exe is a filename, not proof of a particular program. One file with that name is the executable for The Simpsons Hit & Run from Vivendi Universal Games; other files named simpsons.exe have been classified as a general threat or documented as a destructive Trojan. Treat the file as unknown until you verify its full path, hash, publisher information, signature and current security scan results.
Why the name simpsons.exe is ambiguous
Windows identifies an executable primarily by its complete path and contents, not by the visible filename alone. Any program can be renamed to simpsons.exe, and unrelated programs can legitimately share that name. That is why a filename search cannot answer “Is simpsons.exe a virus?” by itself.

These are separate binaries. A clean verdict for one hash does not clear every file with the same name, and a detection for one hash does not prove that the original game executable is malicious.

What the known files show
The game executable
Gridinsoft’s record dated September 19, 2025 describes one 2,850,816-byte PE32 file whose embedded version information identifies “Simpsons Hit & Run (TM),” company “Vivendi Universal Games,” original filename “Simpsons.exe,” product version 1.0.0.0 and copyright 2003. Its scanner reported no threats for that exact sample. The same record says that no valid SignedData structure was found, so the file did not carry a valid digital-signature structure. An unsigned result is a reason to verify the file more carefully, not automatic evidence of malware.
Those details are evidence about the analyzed hash only. They do not authenticate a copy downloaded from a forum, a cracked-game archive or a random file-sharing site. Attackers can copy version fields and company names into a different executable.
The Trojan documented by CERT-FR
A CERT-FR bulletin, CERTA-2000-ALE-011, published June 29, 2000, describes a Trojan distributed as a self-extracting ZIP named SIMPSONS.EXE. After execution it extracted SIMPSONS.BAT and SIMPSONS.BMP; the batch file used DELTREE.EXE to erase drives A: through D:. The bulletin’s remedy was to update antivirus software. This historical threat is unrelated to the game binary except that both reused the same filename.
Other modern samples
ThreatInfo lists another Simpsons.exe hash, MD5 9c049214db41647480f738835451f993, as “General Threat” and associates it with a Trojan report group. Its latest analysis date is February 19, 2026. The report cautions that publisher metadata can be forged or copied, so the hash, path, signature and detection result must be considered together.
Hybrid Analysis also lists a sample timestamped July 22, 2026 with a clean/no-specific-threat result. The differing verdicts reinforce the central point: security conclusions are sample-specific, not filename-specific.
How to decide whether your copy is safe
Do not launch an unknown executable merely to see what it does. Preserve the file long enough to record identifying information, then scan it using up-to-date protection.

1. Record the complete path and file details
- In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties and note the Location, Size, Created and Modified dates.
- Open the Details tab and copy the product name, company, file description, original filename and product version, if present.
- Do not rely on a shortened search result such as “simpsons.exe.” The complete path distinguishes an installed game directory from a temporary or startup folder.
A copy under the original The Simpsons Hit & Run installation directory is more plausible than one in %TEMP%, Downloads, a Startup folder or a randomly named directory under a user profile. Location is a clue, not proof: malware can be placed in a legitimate-looking folder, and a game file can be copied elsewhere.
2. Calculate a cryptographic hash
A hash lets you compare the exact bytes on your PC with a known sample. In Windows PowerShell, open a terminal in the file’s folder and run:
Get-FileHash .simpsons.exe -Algorithm SHA256
Get-FileHash .simpsons.exe -Algorithm MD5Copy the complete SHA-256 and MD5 values. MD5 is useful for matching an existing report, such as the ThreatInfo value above, but SHA-256 is preferable for new comparisons because it is stronger against collisions. A mismatch means the files are different; it does not by itself prove that either file is safe or malicious.
3. Inspect the publisher and signature
- Right-click the file, select Properties, then open Digital Signatures if that tab exists.
- Select a signature and choose Details. Windows should state whether the signature is valid and whether the certificate chains to a trusted publisher.
- Record the signer and signing time. A missing or invalid signature is a warning to investigate, not a verdict.
The analyzed game sample had no valid SignedData structure, so a genuine-looking game copy may still be unsigned. Conversely, a malicious file can carry a stolen or forged-looking metadata block. Compare all of the evidence rather than accepting a company name shown in the Details tab.
4. Check how you obtained the file
- Original discs or a known, legitimate installation: more consistent with the game interpretation, especially when the path, size and version information match.
- Unofficial patch, crack, mod bundle or file-sharing download: higher risk because the executable may have been replaced or repacked.
- Unexpected attachment, pop-up download or a file that appeared without installing the game: treat as suspicious and do not run it.
Do not replace a missing game executable with a copy from an untrusted download. Reinstall from legitimate original media or a verified source instead.

Scan simpsons.exe with Windows Security
Microsoft recommends current security intelligence and a full scan when you suspect an infection. The labels can vary slightly by Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, but the workflow is the same.

Update protection first
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then Protection updates.
- Choose Check for updates and wait for the security-intelligence update to complete.
Updating before scanning matters because detection rules change. If Windows Security reports that protection is managed by another security product, make sure at least one product is actively providing real-time protection before proceeding.
Run a targeted scan
- In Virus & threat protection, select Scan options.
- Choose Custom scan, select the folder containing
simpsons.exe, and start the scan. - Wait for the result and open Protection history to see the detection name, action and affected path.
A quick scan checks common hiding locations; a custom scan is useful when you know the exact file. A clean result means no detection was made by that scan and its current definitions, not that the file has been mathematically proven safe.
Run a full scan for broader suspicion
Choose Scan options > Full scan when the file appeared unexpectedly, the PC has other symptoms or you cannot explain its origin. A full scan takes longer because it checks all accessible files and running locations. Keep the computer powered and avoid interrupting it.
Use quarantine rather than immediate deletion
Microsoft describes quarantine as moving a file to a safe location and blocking it so it cannot run. If Windows Security detects simpsons.exe and you are uncertain whether it is the game, quarantine is the reversible choice. Open Protection history to review the detection before deciding whether to remove it permanently.
Do not choose Allow on device simply because the filename resembles a game. Allow an item only when you have independently verified the hash and source and you understand why the detection is a false positive. Never create an exclusion merely to stop an alert: Microsoft warns that exclusions leave the specified file or process unchecked.
When to run Microsoft Defender Offline
Use Microsoft Defender Offline scan when detections return after removal, security settings change without your action, the file recreates itself, or another scan cannot clean it. The offline scan restarts Windows into the Windows Recovery Environment, where persistent malware has fewer opportunities to hide.

- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan, then Scan now.
- Allow the restart and do not force the PC off while the scan runs.
- After Windows starts, return to Protection history and review the result.
Because the computer restarts, close applications first. If BitLocker or another disk-encryption feature requests a recovery key, keep that key available before starting recovery-environment operations.

On supported Windows 11 installations where enforcement is enabled, Smart App Control blocks unknown unsigned code, malware and potentially unwanted apps by default. A block can therefore indicate that Windows cannot establish sufficient trust; it is not a diagnosis that every unsigned program is malicious. Check the file’s source and hash before deciding what to do.
Do not weaken Smart App Control or add a Defender exclusion solely to launch an unverified copy. If the game is legitimate, obtain a clean replacement from the original media or a verified installer and investigate compatibility instead of bypassing protection.
Can you delete simpsons.exe?
Delete it when it is clearly unwanted
Permanent removal is reasonable after Windows Security identifies the file as malware, after you have quarantined it and preserved any information needed for support, or when you confirm it is an unexpected leftover that no installed application needs. Emptying the Recycle Bin removes your easy recovery option, so quarantine first when there is any uncertainty.
Do not delete a game file blindly
If the file is part of a working The Simpsons Hit & Run installation, deleting it can stop the game from launching. If the game is already broken, deletion alone will not repair missing dependencies or compatibility problems. Use the game’s uninstaller or reinstall from legitimate original media. Before uninstalling, copy saved games if the title stores them inside its installation directory.
When Windows says the file is in use
- Restart Windows and try the uninstall or quarantine action again.
- Check Task Manager for a running process with the same name and end it only after you have confirmed the file’s path.
- Run Defender Offline if the process returns or blocks removal.
- Do not use a third-party “unlocker” downloaded from an untrusted site to force deletion.
Fixing simpsons.exe errors when the file is legitimate
Errors such as “simpsons.exe has stopped working,” missing-DLL messages or an immediate crash can result from damaged game files, old copy-protection behavior, incompatible display settings or a security product blocking the executable. Apply fixes in an order that preserves the known-good file.

1. Confirm that security software did not quarantine it
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. If the game executable was quarantined, verify its source and hash before restoring it. If the detection remains unexplained, leave it quarantined and reinstall from legitimate media rather than adding an exclusion.
2. Repair by reinstalling from trusted media
- Back up saved games and any configuration files.
- Uninstall the game through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10), if it appears there.
- Restart Windows.
- Install again from the original disc or another verified, legitimate installer.
- Apply only documented compatibility updates from a trustworthy source.
A replacement executable from a random “no-CD” or crack archive can introduce a different simpsons.exe with a different hash and risk profile.
3. Try Windows compatibility settings
For an older game on a current Windows release, right-click the verified executable, choose Properties > Compatibility, and test the built-in compatibility troubleshooter. If you change settings manually, change one option at a time and record it so you can undo a setting that makes the crash worse. Compatibility mode may help with old assumptions about display modes or permissions, but it cannot repair a corrupted executable.

4. Check Windows system files when errors affect other programs
If multiple applications report missing or damaged system components, open Terminal (Admin) and run:
sfc /scannowRestart after the scan if Windows reports repairs. This checks protected Windows files; it does not validate a third-party game executable and should not be treated as a malware scan.
5. Restore the environment after a failed change
If the error began after a driver, Windows or software change, use Settings > System > Recovery and review available recovery options. A restore point can reverse system changes, but it does not replace a security investigation when malware is suspected. Keep the suspicious file quarantined while troubleshooting.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the filename: the same name has been used by a game and by malware.
- Trusting metadata alone: company, product and version fields can be copied or forged.
- Deleting before recording evidence: you may lose the hash and path needed to identify the sample.
- Allowing an alert to stop a crash: an exclusion removes a security check and does not repair the underlying problem.
- Downloading a replacement executable: an unofficial replacement can be a different, unsafe binary.
- Stopping after a quick scan: persistent or less obvious threats may require a full or offline scan.
- Assuming a clean report is universal: each scanner result applies to the exact file analyzed, not every file with that filename.
