Shield AI’s X-BAT is an unmanned vertical-takeoff-and-landing combat aircraft under development, designed to operate without a prepared runway. Its proposed design combines a GE F110 engine with a thrust-vectoring nozzle for vertical flight and Shield AI’s Hivemind software for autonomous mission execution. Public updates describe ground tests and planned milestones—not a completed X-BAT flight or demonstrated combat capability.
What is the X-BAT?
X-BAT is Shield AI’s proposed autonomous combat aircraft. The company announced it in October 2025 as a runway-independent design intended to take off and land vertically from locations such as ships, islands, and austere sites. It is an aircraft development program, not a fielded fighter.

Shield AI lists strike, counter-air, electronic warfare, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) among its intended missions. The concept is to combine vertical operation, autonomy, and a payload-carrying aircraft that can work alone or alongside crewed aircraft. These roles and capabilities remain design claims from the companies involved.

How is X-BAT designed to work?
Thrust vectoring is intended to enable vertical flight
The proposed propulsion system pairs a GE F110-GE-129E engine with an Axisymmetric Vectoring Exhaust Nozzle (AVEN). The nozzle is designed to redirect engine exhaust to provide the thrust direction and control needed for vertical takeoff and landing; GE says it can also enhance maneuverability in horizontal flight. This describes the intended design, not a demonstrated X-BAT flight.

On July 20, 2026, GE reported integration, actuation, and engine light-off testing of the F110-GE-129E and AVEN combination. GE characterized this as ground testing ahead of flight tests aboard an X-BAT prototype. AVEN’s earlier development history includes a multi-axis thrust-vectoring program that flew on an F-16 in the 1990s; that was not an X-BAT flight.
Hivemind is the proposed AI pilot
Shield AI says its Hivemind autonomy software is intended to control X-BAT and execute assigned missions in degraded or disconnected conditions, including when GPS or communications are unavailable. The company describes an aircraft operating on its own or cooperating with crewed aircraft and other X-BATs, with a commander assigning tasks to a team.
Those are intended functions described by Shield AI. The cited public updates do not document an X-BAT operational autonomy test, so they should not be read as proof that the aircraft has flown or completed missions without communications.

Payloads and mission roles are proposed, not demonstrated
In its September 2026 update, Shield AI said X-BAT is designed to carry weapons up to the 2,000-pound class in internal bays, as well as power-intensive electronic-warfare and ISR payloads. The company also lists strike and counter-air roles. These are planned design features, not an independently observed or demonstrated loadout.
What performance figures has Shield AI announced?
The public figures use different labels and come from the companies developing the aircraft. Range and combat radius are not interchangeable, and the announcements do not provide common mission assumptions that would let readers reconcile them.
| Figure | What the source says |
|---|---|
| More than 2,000 nautical miles | Shield AI’s October 2025 claim for range with a full mission payload. |
| 1,000 nautical miles | Objective combat radius in Shield AI’s September 2026 update and GE’s July 2026 announcement. |
| Up to the 2,000-pound class | Weapon class Shield AI says X-BAT is designed to carry in internal bays, in its September 2026 update. |
| Three aircraft in the deck space of one legacy fighter or helicopter | Shield AI’s October 2025 compact-footprint claim. |
These figures are company-published specifications or objectives, not independent test results. In particular, do not treat the range and combat-radius numbers as competing estimates of the same measurement.

What is the X-BAT development timeline?
- October 2025: Shield AI announced X-BAT.
- November 2025: GE Aerospace and Shield AI announced their collaboration on the F110 and AVEN propulsion approach.
- July 20, 2026: GE reported engine/nozzle integration, actuation, and light-off testing on the ground ahead of prototype flight testing.
- September 30, 2026: Shield AI named Newton City-County Airport in Kansas as the flight-test and sustainment home, and Des Moines, Washington, as the production home. The company said flight testing would begin later in 2026.
- Planned milestones on Shield AI’s product page: first VTOL flights in 2026, mission capability in 2028, and production in 2029.
These are company schedules, not confirmation that the milestones have occurred. The public updates cited here establish ground testing and plans for flight testing, but do not establish a completed X-BAT flight.
What is known about X-BAT’s price?
Shield AI has said it intends X-BAT to cost far less than fifth-generation jets, but that comparison is the company’s claim. Defense News reported in 2025 that no price had been disclosed. There is no substantiated purchase price or independently verified savings figure in the cited public material.
What has—and has not—been demonstrated?
The public record described by GE and Shield AI supports a distinction between hardware development and aircraft performance: the engine and AVEN combination has undergone reported ground integration, actuation, and light-off testing, while X-BAT’s flight testing and mission capability remain planned milestones. The historical F-16 AVEN program does not establish X-BAT flight performance.
Accordingly, X-BAT is best understood as a proposed autonomous VTOL combat aircraft whose design, roles, performance figures, and affordability remain developer claims until flight and operational testing provide evidence. No full head-to-head comparison with other unmanned combat aircraft is established by these announcements.
