service.notification.updater.exe is not identified as a built-in Windows component, and its filename alone cannot tell you whether the copy on your computer is legitimate. Third-party process references associate the name with Notification Center/NoPing software from 1ncrivel Sistemas LTDA, commonly under C:ProgramDataNotification Center. The same filename can be copied or imitated by malware, however. Check the exact file path, publisher and digital signature, then scan that file with Microsoft Defender before you remove or repair anything.
What service.notification.updater.exe is
An .exe file is a Windows executable. The name service.notification.updater.exe suggests a background updater or notification service, but the name is only a label chosen by the software publisher. Windows does not use this filename as one of its standard protected system executables.

Process-information references associate the filename with Notification Center or NoPing and identify 1ncrivel Sistemas LTDA as the reported publisher. One reference gives C:ProgramDataNotification Center as a typical location. A separate inventory for NoPing version 2.15.25 includes the filename among that package’s executables. Those records show that the name has appeared in a legitimate software installation; they do not authenticate the copy on your PC.
There are also isolated security references to the same string. A Peruvian government digital-security alert dated September 11, 2023 lists the filename alongside file hashes, and a Malwarebytes forum case describes a scheduled-task entry using the name during an individual malware-removal incident. Neither source establishes that every file with this name is malicious. A familiar filename can be used by an unrelated program, copied to another folder or deliberately chosen to look trustworthy.

Is service.notification.updater.exe safe?
There is no safe yes-or-no answer based only on the filename. Treat the file as unverified until you inspect the particular executable and scan it. A file in the reported Notification Center directory with a publisher and signature that match software you knowingly installed is more consistent with the known NoPing association than a copy in an unexpected system directory. Location and publisher are clues, not proof; scan the exact file in either case.
| Check | More consistent with a known NoPing installation | Why the check is not conclusive |
|---|---|---|
| Full path | C:ProgramDataNotification Centerservice.notification.updater.exe, or another path used by your confirmed NoPing installation |
Malware can be placed in a familiar-looking directory, and a legitimate installation can use a different path or version. |
| Publisher and signature | Properties identify 1ncrivel Sistemas LTDA and show a valid signature that Windows can verify | A displayed name can be forged, and an unsigned or invalidly signed file needs further investigation rather than an automatic verdict. |
| Software context | You intentionally installed NoPing or Notification Center and the executable appeared with that application | An unwanted program can install alongside another application, and a legitimate filename can be reused by a different program. |
| Security scan | Microsoft Defender reports no threat for the selected file | A clean result is useful evidence but does not identify the publisher or guarantee that every future version is safe. |
| Behavior | The process starts when the associated application runs and stops when that application is closed | CPU use, pop-ups or a scheduled task can have several causes; behavior alone cannot establish the file’s identity. |
Do not treat a risk percentage shown on a process-information website as an independently measured probability. It is that site’s assessment, not a Windows or laboratory verdict.
Before changing anything: preserve the evidence
Do not immediately delete the executable, its scheduled task or registry entries. Removing a file can destroy the information needed to determine what installed it, and deleting a task by name can break a legitimate application. First record the path, publisher and signature, and note whether NoPing is installed. If Windows Security detects a threat, follow its quarantine or remediation instructions instead of manually opening the file.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Save open documents before running an offline scan or restarting Windows.
- Use the full path, not just the process name, in every later check.
- Take note of the Windows edition (10 or 11) because context-menu labels differ slightly.
- If you did not knowingly install NoPing or Notification Center, treat that absence as a reason for additional checking, not as proof of malware.
Step 1: find the exact executable used by the process
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes or Details view, look for
service.notification.updater.exe. If several entries appear, check each one rather than assuming they are the same file. - Use the process’s file-location command, when available, to open the folder containing the executable. Record the complete path, including the drive letter and every folder name.
- Close Task Manager only after you have recorded the path. A process can disappear when its parent application closes; if that happens, reopen the associated application and repeat the check.
The path lets you distinguish a file that belongs to a known installation from an identically named copy elsewhere. It is evidence for the next checks, not a verdict by itself.

Step 2: inspect Properties, publisher and digital signature
- In File Explorer, right-click the exact executable and choose Properties.
- Review the General and Details tabs for the product name, file description, version and copyright information. Compare those fields with the NoPing software you knowingly installed, if applicable.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab when it is present. Select a signature and choose Details to see whether Windows reports that the signature is valid and which signer is shown.
- Record an absent, invalid or unexpected signature as a warning sign. It is not, on its own, proof that the executable is malicious; some legitimate files are unsigned, while a displayed publisher can still be impersonated.
Do not rely on the filename, icon, version number or folder name in isolation. The useful comparison is the combination of full path, publisher/signature and the software you intended to install.
Step 3: scan the selected file with Microsoft Defender
Microsoft supports scanning an individual file from File Explorer. This is the fastest way to obtain a security result for the executable you actually inspected.
- Keep File Explorer open to the folder containing the recorded file.
- Right-click
service.notification.updater.exeand choose Scan with Microsoft Defender. - On Windows 11, choose Show more options first if the scan command is not visible in the compact menu.
- Wait for Windows Security to finish and read the result for that file. If it reports a threat, allow Windows Security to quarantine or remove it according to the offered remediation options.
Scan the exact copy you found. Scanning a different file with the same name, or scanning only the containing folder after the process has moved, does not answer the identity question for the executable that generated the error.
Step 4: use Microsoft Defender Offline when doubt remains
If the file keeps returning, security warnings continue, or you cannot confidently explain its path and publisher, run an offline scan. Microsoft Defender Offline restarts the PC and scans in the Windows Recovery Environment, before the normal Windows session loads. That makes it useful when a running process could interfere with an ordinary scan.

- Open Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan, and start the scan.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the scan. Do not turn off the PC during the restart-and-scan sequence.
- After Windows starts again, open Windows Security and review the protection history for the result.
The offline scan is a security check, not a repair for an application’s broken update process. If it finds nothing, continue with the software and Windows-component checks below rather than deleting files at random.
Step 5: fix errors when the file belongs to NoPing
If the path and Properties match a NoPing installation you intentionally use, handle an error as an application-maintenance problem after the security checks have completed.
Update or repair through the publisher’s support path
Use the publisher’s supported update or support process for the installed NoPing version. This is safer than replacing the executable with a download from an unrelated site or copying a same-named file from another computer. Keep the installation’s version information from the Properties window available when contacting support.

Uninstall NoPing if you no longer want it
- Open Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps on current Windows versions.
- Find NoPing or Notification Center in the installed-app list, open its menu and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the vendor’s uninstaller, then restart Windows if it requests a restart.
- Check Task Manager and the original folder after the uninstall. Do not manually remove a remaining file until you have confirmed that the uninstaller has finished and that the file is not being used by another component.
If NoPing is not listed, do not infer that the executable is safe or unsafe from that fact alone. Recheck the path and signature, run the Defender scans and investigate any parent application or scheduled task that refers to the file.

Step 6: repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Errors mentioning this executable can occur alongside broader Windows corruption, but the commands below repair protected Windows components; they are not a direct repair for a third-party NoPing executable. Use them when Windows features are also failing, system files are reported as corrupt, or the error persists after the associated application has been repaired or removed.
- Open Command Prompt with administrator rights. In the Start search, type
Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. - Run this command and wait for it to complete:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow - Allow System File Checker to reach 100 percent, then read its result. Restart Windows if requested and check whether the original Windows symptoms remain.
Running SFC before DISM can leave the component store unrepaired, which is why this sequence places DISM first. Neither command authenticates, updates or removes service.notification.updater.exe.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“The system cannot find service.notification.updater.exe” appears at startup
First determine whether NoPing is still installed. If you intentionally removed it, the message may be a leftover startup reference; use the application’s own uninstaller or supported support path rather than deleting registry entries blindly. If the application remains installed, repair or update it through the publisher and then repeat the path and signature checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe process returns after you close it
An updater or notification component may be launched by its parent application or a scheduled task. Record the parent application and scan the executable before changing startup configuration. A recurring task that merely contains this filename is not proof of malware, so do not delete the task solely because of its name.

Windows Security detects the file
Use the remediation offered in Windows Security, review Protection history and follow up with Microsoft Defender Offline if concern remains. Do not restore the file or add an exclusion simply to make the error disappear.
The file is in an unexpected folder
Unexpected location is a reason to escalate the inspection: verify the signature, scan the exact file and check whether you knowingly installed the associated software. Location alone cannot establish that the file is malicious, because legitimate software can use different installation layouts.
The error appears with other Windows failures
Run DISM followed by SFC as described above, then restart. If only NoPing fails while Windows components work normally, focus on updating or uninstalling that application instead of repeatedly repairing Windows.

Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not declare the file safe because its name looks official or because one website associates it with NoPing.
- Do not declare every copy malicious because a 2023 alert or an individual forum case listed the same filename.
- Do not download a replacement executable from an unofficial mirror.
- Do not delete scheduled tasks, registry entries or system folders solely because they mention
service.notification.updater.exe. - Do not use DISM or SFC as a substitute for scanning and identifying a third-party executable.
- Do not open the file to “test” it when its origin is uncertain; inspect and scan it instead.
A practical decision path
- Known NoPing installation, expected path, matching publisher and clean scan: treat the file as consistent with that installation and use the publisher’s update/support process for application errors.
- Known NoPing installation but mismatched path, publisher or signature: stop treating it as an ordinary update problem; scan the exact file and run Defender Offline if uncertainty continues.
- No known installation: record the path, inspect Properties, scan with Defender and investigate the parent application before removing anything.
- Windows-wide corruption symptoms: after security checks, run DISM and then SFC. These commands address protected Windows components, not the identity of the executable.
- Threat detected: follow Windows Security’s remediation, restart as directed and review Protection history rather than trying to repair the detected file manually.
