What Is Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)? Definition and How It Works

Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is a serial storage interconnect in the SCSI family. Learn how its initiator, target, and expander architecture works—and what physical compatibility with SATA does and does not mean.

Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is a serial storage interconnect and transport protocol in the SCSI standards family. It defines how a controller and storage devices communicate over a SAS path; it is not the name of a particular hard drive.

What does Serial Attached SCSI mean?

Serial Attached SCSI is commonly shortened to SAS. It uses serial physical connections to link a controller with storage or other I/O devices. ISO/IEC 14776-150 defines functional requirements for the SAS physical interconnect and states that it is compatible with the Serial ATA (SATA) physical interconnect. ISO/IEC 14776-150:2004 is listed as published in November 2004, reviewed and confirmed in 2018, and current.

SAS is an interface and communications framework, not a drive type by itself. A SAS hard drive is one example of a device that can use it.

How does a SAS connection work?

A basic SAS path connects a controller-side initiator port to an I/O device’s target port. The controller initiates communication; a disk can be the target. An expander can route connections between its ports, allowing a controller connection to reach multiple device ports. IBM’s SAS architecture overview describes this arrangement.

  • 12TB enterprise storage capacity in a 3.5-inch form factor
  • 512e Advanced Format, 256MB Buffer/Cache
  • SAS 12Gb/s Interface, SAS 12Gb/s NOT Compatible w/ Desktop PCs
  • Helium sealed-design drive
  • Enterprise Reliability for 24/7 Operation

The conceptual path is:

Host/controller → initiator port → SAS path → target port → storage device

If an expander is present, it routes the connection between the controller-side and device-side ports. This describes the architecture, not a universal cabling recipe: connectors, cables, controllers, and devices must be checked against the specific equipment.

  • Works for RAID System, NAS Network Storage, Datacenter Storage, Servers (SAS Interface controller required)
  • Bare Drive Only, Single Pack, (No Screws, Cables or Accessories included) -Friendly Reminder- Please FORMAT HDD on system in order to be detected/shows on system.

Is SAS the same as SCSI?

SAS belongs to the broader SCSI standards family, but SAS is not all of SCSI. It specifies a serial physical interconnect and transport within that family. Earlier parallel SCSI used a parallel interface; SAS uses serial physical connections. T10’s SCSI standards architecture explains the broader family and notes that its component standards evolve independently.

How is SAS related to SATA?

SAS and SATA have compatible physical interconnects according to ISO/IEC 14776-150. That statement is about the physical interconnect; it does not establish that every SATA or SAS drive, controller, connector, or system configuration is interchangeable. Check the documentation for the actual controller, drive, and connection before assuming compatibility.

Which SAS standards are published?

T10 lists SAS-4 (INCITS 534-2019) and SAS-4.1 (INCITS 567-2023) as published standards. Its drafts page lists SAS-5, in a revision dated May 11, 2026, with the status “INCITS Approval”; that is a draft-stage status, not evidence that SAS-5 is published. Standards status can change, so consult T10’s current standards and drafts listing for the latest entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SAS in a hard drive?

It means the drive uses a Serial Attached SCSI interface as a target device. SAS itself is the interconnect and transport protocol, not the drive model.

Seagate Enterprise ST18000NM004J Internal Hard Drive 3.5" 18TB SAS
  • Warning - This is a SAS drive and not intended to be used in a desktop PC, please be sure you have the correct SAS interface when purchasing this drive.
  • Memory storage capacity: 18000.0
  • With enhanced caching, making it the logical choice for cloud data centre and massive scale-out data centre applications
  • Built for 24/7 operation with a high 2.5 million hours Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) rating and an advanced helium-sealed design for consistent, long-term operation.

How does a SAS drive connect to a server?

A server controller’s initiator port connects through a SAS path to the drive’s target port. An expander may route connections to multiple devices; the required controller and cabling depend on the hardware.

Can a SAS controller connect SATA drives?

Physical-interconnect compatibility alone does not guarantee that a particular controller, drive, connector, and configuration will work together. Check the manufacturers’ documentation for the exact equipment.
