What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To resize a video, first decide whether you need different pixel dimensions, a different frame shape, or both. Use HandBrake for a straightforward desktop conversion or downscale, Shotcut when you also need timeline editing, and CapCut or Canva for browser-based resizing and reframing. Choose the export size to match your source and destination: enlarging a video adds pixels, but cannot restore detail that was never captured.
Resolution and aspect ratio are different settings
Resolution is the exported frame’s pixel width and height—for example, 1920 × 1080. Aspect ratio describes the frame’s shape, such as landscape or vertical. You can change one without changing the other, or resize and reframe in the same workflow.

When fitting landscape footage into a vertical frame, choose how to handle the mismatch: crop the sides, fit the entire image with unused space, or fill the space with a background treatment. Check the subject’s position and any text near the edges before exporting; a crop that looks acceptable in a preview may cut off important content.

HandBrake: convert or downscale on a desktop
HandBrake’s automatic sizing maximizes output size up to the source resolution or a configured resolution limit. It also tries to detect and crop black bars by default. Those defaults can be useful, but inspect the crop and dimensions before encoding—especially if the bars are intentional or part of the composition. See HandBrake’s resizing documentation.

Choose a destination-appropriate preset, then review its constraints rather than assuming it preserves the source’s full resolution and frame rate. HandBrake’s official preset documentation explains that some presets limit resolution and frame rate.
Shotcut: resize while editing
Shotcut describes itself as a free, open-source, cross-platform editor, with broad audio and video format support attributed to FFmpeg and resolution support up to 4K. It is a reasonable option when resizing is part of a larger timeline or picture-editing task. Set the project or export dimensions for the destination, then check the framing. The available product information does not establish comparative speed or output quality. Details are on the Shotcut official site.

CapCut: change resolution or canvas in a browser or app
CapCut’s resolution-converter instructions describe importing a clip, choosing an export resolution, reviewing settings such as quality, frame rate, and format, and exporting. Its page lists choices from 360p through 4K. For a different frame shape, its resizer describes changing the aspect ratio and fitting the original image within a new canvas, including background fills when needed. Higher-resolution export is not guaranteed across every device or account. CapCut’s help article, updated with conditions reported as of January 2026, says 2K and 4K availability depends on device, operating system, and platform. Web export depends on browser and device support; desktop and mobile options also vary by device. The article says free accounts may face watermark or bitrate limits on 4K. Check the export menu in your own current app or browser rather than assuming a particular option is available: CapCut’s 2K/4K export help page.

Resize a video step by step
For a simple desktop conversion or downscale in HandBrake
- Open the source video in HandBrake.
- Select a preset that fits the intended destination, then review its resolution and frame-rate constraints.
- Inspect the dimensions and crop. If automatic crop removed intentional image content or bars, adjust it before encoding.
- Set a resolution limit if you need to cap the output size, then encode and check the resulting file.
For timeline editing in Shotcut
- Open the video in Shotcut and set the project or export frame dimensions to the intended output.
- Adjust the image’s fit or crop for that frame, paying attention to the subject and edge text.
- Export and confirm the resulting dimensions, frame rate, and format against the destination’s requirements.
For browser or app resizing in CapCut or Canva
- Import the clip and choose the target resolution or canvas aspect ratio.
- Choose whether to crop, fit the full image with space, or use a background fill.
- Preview the composition, then review the export settings actually offered on your device and account.
- Export and check the output file’s dimensions and format before publishing or sending it.
Match the export to the source and destination
Before encoding, check the destination’s required dimensions, frame rate, and file format, then make sure your chosen tool offers them. Keep a copy of the original so you can create another version with different framing or settings later.

Downscaling reduces the output pixel dimensions. Upscaling increases them, but it does not recreate captured detail. CapCut’s converter page explains that interpolation adds pixels; its example notes that a 480p source will not match native 1080p quality. Choose a higher output size only when the delivery requirement justifies it, and do not treat the larger pixel count as evidence of native detail.
