What Is reloader.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix Its Errors on Windows

reloader.exe is not identified as a standard Windows core file, but its name alone cannot tell you whether a particular copy is safe or malicious. Check its full file path, publisher and digital signature, how it starts, and the result of a security scan before deciding what to do. Do not delete it just because the filename looks unfamiliar.

What is reloader.exe?

Reloader.exe is the name of an executable file. File.net reports that it has no description, is not a Windows core file, and may be configured to start with Windows. The filename is not unique, however: different applications can use the same name, and malicious software can imitate it. Those filename-level observations do not establish what any particular copy on your PC does.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters. A copy installed as part of a program you recognize may be a helper process, while an unexplained copy in an unexpected folder, with no verifiable publisher, or with suspicious persistence deserves investigation. The available information does not establish a single legitimate application that owns every file named reloader.exe.

Is reloader.exe safe or a virus?

There is no reliable yes-or-no answer based only on the name. Assess the specific file using several clues together. A missing or invalid signature, an unexpected location, an unexplained startup entry, or an antivirus detection increases concern; none of those clues by itself identifies the file as a particular threat. A valid signature is useful evidence, but check whether the signer is the vendor you expect for the application that appears to own the file.

What to check What it can tell you
Full path Whether the file is in a location that makes sense for the application you recognize. An unexpected location is a reason to investigate, not proof of malware.
Publisher and digital signature Whether Windows can identify a signer and whether that signer matches the expected vendor. Missing or invalid signatures are warning signs; a valid signature should still be checked against the vendor.
How it starts Whether a Run or RunOnce entry, scheduled task, service, or shortcut launches it. An unexplained entry may warrant further investigation.
Security scan Whether Windows Security or another reputable antimalware tool detects the file or other threats on the device. A clean scan is useful evidence, but it does not prove the file is legitimate.
Recent application changes Whether the error or startup behavior began after you installed or updated a specific application. That link can point toward an ordinary program problem.

File.net displays a 31% dangerous technical rating for the name. That is File.net’s own heuristic assessment, not a Microsoft measurement, a malware prevalence figure, or a determination about the copy on your PC. No authoritative reloader.exe-specific prevalence or detection-rate statistic is established here.

How to check a reloader.exe file safely

  1. Find the file that is actually running. Open Task Manager, find the reloader.exe process, right-click it, and select Open file location. Record the full path. If there is no running process, search for the file only if you know where you saw the error or startup entry; do not assume that a similarly named file elsewhere is the same copy.
  2. Identify the application that launched it. Note whether the location and surrounding application files correspond to a program you recognize, and whether the problem began after installing or updating that program. If this is a work-managed device, contact your IT or security team before removing evidence or changing settings.
  3. Check the publisher and signature. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs if present. A missing signature is not proof of malicious activity. If a signature is present, check that it is valid and that its signer is consistent with the expected application vendor.
  4. Check how it persists. Look for a matching entry in Task Manager’s Startup apps list, Task Scheduler, Services, or a shortcut. Microsoft notes that fake installers can create scheduled-task persistence. An entry you cannot connect to a known application or administrator action is a reason to investigate; do not remove unrelated entries.
  5. Scan the exact file and the PC. In Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection and run a scan. If the available options include a custom scan, scan the folder containing the file; use a full scan to check the rest of the device. Menu labels can vary by Windows version. You can also use another reputable antimalware tool. Treat a detection as a reason to follow the security tool’s instructions, not as permission to delete other files with similar names.

Do not upload a potentially sensitive work file to a public scanning service without your organization’s approval. If an incident-response investigation may be needed, preserve the file and its location details rather than deleting or modifying it.

Why does reloader.exe start with Windows or show an error?

There are two broad possibilities: a legitimate application is starting a helper process or failing to load it, or an unwanted program is using the name and arranging to run at startup. File.net reports that the filename may start with Windows, but that does not tell you which program created a particular startup entry. Microsoft also documents that fake installers can use scheduled tasks to persist, so check more than the Startup apps list if the file is unexplained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A known application was installed or updated: The error may come from that application’s damaged or incomplete installation. If scans are clean and the file’s publisher and location make sense, repair, update, reset, or uninstall the owning application through Windows Settings.
  • The entry is unfamiliar or points to an unexpected location: Treat it as suspicious until you can identify its owner. Scan the file and device, and avoid signing into sensitive accounts from the PC if you suspect compromise.
  • Windows components may be damaged: If problems remain after dealing with a confirmed threat or a broken application, Microsoft’s documented repair sequence is System File Checker followed by DISM.

The filename alone cannot distinguish these cases. The path, signer, persistence mechanism, scan result, and timing of the error are more useful together than any one clue in isolation.

How to fix ordinary reloader.exe application errors

Use this route only when the file appears to belong to an application you recognize and security scans do not identify a threat. Repairing the owning application is safer than deleting its executable by hand.

  1. Open Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps. In some Windows versions, the page is labeled Apps & features.
  2. Find the application associated with the file. If its entry offers Advanced options, try Repair first. If the problem remains, use Reset only if you understand that it can clear that application’s local data or settings.
  3. If repair or reset is unavailable, install an update from the application’s legitimate source, or uninstall and reinstall the application. Before uninstalling, preserve any data you need and make sure you can obtain the installer again.
  4. Restart Windows and check whether the same application still reports a reloader.exe error. If it does, note the exact message and the application name; do not replace the file with a copy from an unrelated download site.

If Windows will not install or remove the application, Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is designed to address problems such as corrupted registry keys and incomplete uninstall or update data. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the tool and select the affected program. It is intended for installation and removal problems; it is not a malware scanner and does not establish that reloader.exe is safe.

What to do if reloader.exe looks malicious

If the file is unexplained and a security tool detects it, or other signs point to compromise, prioritize containment and a security scan rather than manual deletion. Microsoft’s ZLoader guidance says, “If ZLoader has been launched, it is likely that the device is under complete attacker control.” That warning applies to a confirmed serious ZLoader infection; it is not evidence that every file named reloader.exe is ZLoader.

  1. Disconnect the PC from networks. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet while you assess a credible malware concern. Avoid signing in to sensitive accounts from that device.
  2. Use updated security definitions and scan. Open Windows Security or another reputable antimalware tool, make sure its definitions are current, and run a full scan. Microsoft says Microsoft Defender Antivirus automatically removes threats as they are detected. Follow the tool’s instructions for any detection and restart if requested.
  3. Review what remains. If suspicious processes or startup behavior continue, check for unexplained unsigned processes or processes running from temporary directories, and review the startup entries, tasks, or services you identified. Do not disable a legitimate service or delete a file unless you have identified it.
  4. Repair Windows components if needed. If system problems remain after addressing the threat, run the commands in the next section from an elevated terminal.
  5. Escalate when compromise is serious or persistent. For a managed device, contact your organization’s security team. If the PC remains untrustworthy, Microsoft’s threat guidance includes restoring from a known-clean backup or reinstalling Windows when necessary. A backup made after compromise may not be clean.

A suspicious filename is not enough to justify wiping a PC, but a confirmed serious threat should not be treated as an ordinary application error. Preserve relevant evidence if a security professional may need to investigate.

Run Microsoft’s system-file repair commands

Use these commands if Windows components may be damaged and application or security troubleshooting has not resolved the problem. They repair Windows components; they do not identify the owner of reloader.exe or guarantee that an application error will be fixed.

  1. Right-click Start and open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
    sfc /scannow
  3. After System File Checker finishes, run:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. When DISM completes, restart the PC and check whether the Windows or application problem remains.

Keep the commands in this order: Microsoft documents running SFC first, followed by DISM. If either command reports an error or cannot complete, record the full message rather than repeatedly deleting files or changing startup settings.

Should you delete reloader.exe?

Not solely because of its name. First identify the exact file, its application, signature, startup entry, and scan result. If it belongs to a known application, use that application’s repair or uninstall process. If a security tool detects it, follow the tool’s quarantine or removal instructions. If the file is on a work device or may be evidence of an incident, ask the responsible IT or security team before altering it.

Deleting an executable by hand can leave a broken application or a startup entry that still points to a missing file. It can also remove evidence without resolving whatever created the entry. When you cannot establish what owns the file, scanning and identifying the owner are safer next steps than guessing.

If you have already checked the file and are dealing with a Windows or application error rather than a confirmed malware threat, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can address some common Windows issues, adjust settings, and clean temporary and cache files. It complements antivirus software; it does not replace it, and no tool repairs every crash. A free trial by category lasts at least two days, followed by a paid subscription; results vary.

What the evidence does not establish

The available filename-level information does not identify a universal publisher, legitimate application, version, or safe location for reloader.exe. It also does not establish a reloader.exe-specific infection rate or prove that a copy on any one PC is malicious. Make the decision from the file you actually have, using its path, signer, behavior, startup mechanism, and scan results.
