What rekordbox.exe does
Windows starts rekordbox.exe when you launch rekordbox, AlphaTheta’s music-management and DJ-performance application. The executable coordinates the program’s interface, library database, analysis and communication with supported controllers and audio devices. A separate process called rekordboxAgent may also run; it handles communication functions that can be blocked by security or network software.

The 5.x.x portion is a versioned folder, not a literal name that appears on every computer. Newer releases, 32-bit versus 64-bit installations, and a custom installation location can produce a different legitimate path. Treat the example as a verification clue, not as a requirement that every copy use exactly the same directory.

Is rekordbox.exe safe?
A genuine copy installed from AlphaTheta’s rekordbox software is a normal Windows application. However, Windows identifies a process by its filename, and malware can use the same name. Safety therefore depends on the file’s location, publisher information and digital signature, not on the text “rekordbox.exe” alone.
Check the running file’s location
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Choose Details. If the simplified view is shown, select More details first.
- Find
rekordbox.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. - Compare the folder with the location you chose during installation. A standard rekordbox 5 example is under
C:Program FilesPioneerrekordbox 5.x.x.
A copy in an unexpected user-profile, temporary or downloads folder deserves investigation, especially if you did not install rekordbox there. An unusual path is a warning sign, not conclusive proof of malware; legitimate portable or custom installations can differ.
Inspect the publisher and signature
- In the file location, right-click
rekordbox.exeand choose Properties. - On Details, record the product name, version and publisher fields.
- On Digital Signatures, select the signer, choose Details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
If the signature is missing, invalid or names an unrelated publisher, do not replace the file with a download from an unofficial site. Save the path and the exact alert, disconnect from sensitive services if appropriate, and obtain a clean installer from AlphaTheta’s official distribution channel or your organization’s software administrator. The available vendor guidance documents troubleshooting failures; it is not an independent malware audit of every file named rekordbox.exe.

Why Windows may show a rekordbox.exe error
The same process can fail for unrelated reasons. Use the message and the point of failure to choose a low-risk fix rather than changing many settings at once.

These categories come from AlphaTheta and Pioneer DJ troubleshooting guidance. They describe known failure modes, not a guarantee that every crash has one of these causes.
Fix rekordbox.exe errors safely, step by step
1. Capture the exact failure before changing anything
- Write down the complete error text, including any code or DLL name.
- Note whether the failure occurs at launch, during login or activation, when importing a track, when connecting hardware, or during playback.
- Record the rekordbox version shown in the application or installer and the full path of the running executable.
- Take a screenshot if the message disappears. Keeping the original wording makes it easier to match the issue to vendor instructions.
Do not repeatedly terminate the process while it is writing a database. Close rekordbox normally whenever possible and back up the music library before repair work that touches database files.
2. Check Controlled Folder Access and ransomware protection
Windows Defender’s Controlled Folder Access and related ransomware-protection settings can prevent a legitimate rekordbox process from creating or updating files. AlphaTheta specifically instructs users with activation or write failures to check these controls and, where appropriate, allow the rekordbox program.

- Select Virus & threat protection, then open Manage ransomware protection (the exact wording can vary by Windows release).
- Review Controlled folder access and its blocked-app history.
- If rekordbox is the blocked application and you obtained it from a legitimate installer, choose Allow an app through Controlled folder access and browse to the verified executable. AlphaTheta’s documented example is
C:Program FilesPioneerrekordbox 5.x.xrekordbox.exe. - Launch rekordbox and repeat the action that failed. Remove the exception if it does not resolve the problem or if the file’s identity cannot be verified.
Avoid disabling ransomware protection globally as a first step. A narrow exception is easier to review and undo than a system-wide change.

3. Check antivirus, firewall and VPN interference
AlphaTheta documents cases in which antivirus software or a firewall blocks normal operation. Its support guidance also says that antivirus or VPN software can block communication between rekordbox and rekordboxAgent.
- Open your security software’s blocked-events or quarantine history and look for entries naming
rekordbox.exeorrekordboxAgent. - If the files are in the verified AlphaTheta/Pioneer installation directory and the alert is a block rather than a detection of malicious content, create a narrowly scoped application or network exception for both programs.
- Check Windows Firewall’s Allow an app through firewall page and ensure the appropriate network profiles are selected for the way you use rekordbox.
- Temporarily disconnect the VPN and test again. If communication works only with the VPN off, consult the VPN’s split-tunneling or application-exception settings rather than leaving the VPN disabled permanently.
- Restart rekordbox after each change so you can identify which setting mattered.
Do not add an exception for an unverified copy, and do not interpret a blocked application alert as proof that the file is infected. Security controls can produce false positives or simply prevent a program from writing where it normally would.
4. Isolate USB devices when rekordbox will not start
Pioneer DJ recommends removing external devices when rekordbox fails during startup or crashes. USB hubs, external hard drives, flash drives, SD cards, card readers and other peripherals can introduce a bad connection, an unavailable drive or a conflicting driver.

- Disconnect USB hubs, external hard drives, flash drives, SD-card readers and other nonessential USB devices. Leave only the keyboard, mouse and display connected.
- Restart Windows and launch rekordbox with no DJ controller attached.
- If it opens, close it, reconnect one device, and launch again. Repeat until the failing device or connection is identified.
- Try a different USB port and remove the hub from the chain. If the problem returns only when a storage device is attached, copy important library data to another location before further testing.
This procedure changes the hardware environment without altering the database, so it is a safer first test than deleting library files.

5. Repair audio and controller drivers
Audio-output failures, an unrecognized controller and unstable hardware often require Windows updates or a clean reinstall of the device’s dedicated driver. AlphaTheta’s Windows guide gives the following order; use the driver package supplied for your exact device and Windows version.
- Disconnect the controller or audio device from the computer.
- Close rekordbox and any other software that may be using the device.
- Open Control Panel, choose Programs and Features (or the driver’s documented uninstaller), and uninstall the dedicated driver.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current official driver for the device.
- Reconnect the hardware only after installation completes.
- Launch rekordbox and select the intended audio output in its audio settings. Test at low volume before normal playback.
Install pending Windows updates as part of this process when the vendor guide identifies an operating-system requirement. Do not install a driver for a similar-looking model; a mismatched package can create a new failure.
6. Resolve “MFReadWrite.dll not found” and similar Windows-component errors
Pioneer DJ’s troubleshooting material specifically lists MFReadWrite.dll not found as a Windows issue and directs readers to the applicable Windows service-pack or update path. This message indicates missing or unsupported Windows media components, not that you should download a random DLL from a third-party site.
- Copy the complete message, including the Windows edition and version if shown.
- Run Windows Update from Settings > Windows Update and install applicable cumulative or feature updates.
- Restart the computer, then apply any service-pack or component requirement identified by the official rekordbox/Pioneer guidance for your Windows release.
- Launch rekordbox again. If the DLL message remains, repair or reinstall rekordbox using the official installer rather than copying a DLL into the program folder.
Windows editions and support status change over time, so follow the requirement for your exact release instead of assuming that a package intended for another edition will work.

7. Recover a damaged rekordbox database
A startup crash or missing library can result from a damaged database. Database recovery is more consequential than changing a firewall rule: make a separate backup of the library and close rekordbox completely before renaming anything.
- Exit rekordbox. Confirm in Task Manager that neither
rekordbox.exenor a related rekordbox process is still running. - Back up the current rekordbox database and music-library data to a separate location. A USB storage device can be used for backup or restore, but the available guidance does not establish one universally suitable brand, capacity or filesystem.
- In the rekordbox database folder, locate
datafile.edband rename it todatafile.edb.old. - Locate
datafile.backup.edband rename it todatafile.edb. - Start rekordbox and check whether the library opens and the expected playlists and tracks appear.
- If the application still fails, close it again. As a last resort, rename the remaining data files with an
.oldextension and re-import tracks from your backed-up library.
Renaming preserves the original files for rollback; deleting them does not. A recovered database may not contain changes made after the backup was created, which is why a current copy should be retained before the first rename.
8. Reinstall rekordbox only after the targeted checks
If the verified executable is damaged, required components are present, security rules are correct, USB devices are isolated and the database recovery did not help, reinstalling the application can replace corrupted program files. Export or back up playlists, database files and settings first. Download the installer through AlphaTheta’s official channel, disconnect unnecessary hardware during installation, restart Windows, and then reconnect devices and restore the library. Do not overwrite a backup with a newly created empty database until you have confirmed that the old copy is safe.
How to interpret high CPU use by rekordbox.exe
Seeing rekordbox.exe in Task Manager is expected while rekordbox is open. CPU percentage by itself does not establish malware or a fault, and the available vendor material does not provide a universal “normal” CPU number. Investigate sustained or disruptive usage methodically.
- Verify the process path and publisher using the checks above.
- In Task Manager, note whether CPU use falls after you stop importing, analyzing or playing tracks and whether another process, such as security software, is consuming resources at the same time.
- Close unnecessary applications, disconnect USB peripherals and relaunch rekordbox with a small test library.
- Apply the security, driver, Windows-update and database steps that match any accompanying error.
- If CPU remains high with the verified application, no peripherals and no visible error, record the version, Windows build, library size and reproducible action before contacting AlphaTheta support.
Avoid ending the process while it is writing to the database or changing many system settings simultaneously; either action makes the cause harder to identify.

This order favors reversible changes first. Database-file changes and reinstallation come later because they can affect library state and require a backup.
