PvE means “player versus environment”: in ARC Raiders, it is fighting the AI-controlled ARC machines. The standard game is PvPvE, not guaranteed PvE-only matchmaking: other human Raiders share the world and may cooperate, avoid you, or attack. Embark announced a limited PvE toggle test for October 13–20, 2026, with player-to-player damage disabled during those test sessions; the studio said the toggle would be removed afterward.
What does PvE mean in ARC Raiders?
PvE stands for “player versus environment.” Here, the environment includes the ARC machines: AI-controlled enemies that Raiders encounter while scavenging and trying to extract. PlayStation describes both ARC machines and rival Raiders as threats to those objectives (PlayStation’s ARC Raiders page).

When human players can also threaten one another, the experience is more precisely described as PvPvE: player versus player versus environment. The ARC machines are one source of danger; other Raiders are another.

Is ARC Raiders PvE or PvPvE?
Standard matchmaking is PvPvE. You may encounter ARC machines and other human Raiders in the same session. Those players can cooperate, keep their distance, or fight. The presence of PvE combat does not mean that the human-player threat is switched off.
#1 Best Overall
- ARC Raiders Deluxe Edition includes the base game and the following content: The Wanderer Set, including the following cosmetic items: “Valente” Outfit" “Pathfinder” Backpack,“Blanket Roll” Backpack Attachment.
- Plus: Character Cosmetic, Finger Gun Rapid Fire Emote, Cowboy Scrappy Body Type and Skin, 2 400 Raider Tokens.
That distinction matters most when deciding whether to approach another Raider, spend time looting, or head for extraction. Xbox Wire explains that ARC machines can be a shared enemy, but their presence and potential rewards can also draw other groups, creating competing incentives to fight, loot, or leave (Xbox Wire’s gameplay overview).
Can other players attack you in standard matchmaking?
Yes. Embark’s May 20, 2026 matchmaking notes state that standard matchmaking does not offer “PvE-only” lobbies where other Raiders are guaranteed never to attack. The studio’s succinct warning is: “Topside always carries risk.” (Embark’s matchmaking notes.)
Rank #2
Matchmaking may make players with similar behavior more likely to meet, but it is not a peacekeeping promise. A friendly-seeming encounter can still turn hostile, so do not treat another player’s presence or apparent intent as protection from an attack.
How does behavior-sensitive matchmaking work?
Embark describes player behavior as a continuum rather than two fixed categories such as “friendly” and “aggressive.” Its system considers behavior patterns over time, and similar playstyles are more likely—not certain—to be matched together.
Rank #3
- One incident does not define your matchmaking: a single shot or kill does not immediately place you in PvP-focused lobbies.
- Starting a fight differs from defending yourself: Embark says the system distinguishes initiating combat from self-defense.
- Quiet rounds count less: low-activity rounds receive less weight.
- Loadout and end-of-round feedback are not inputs: Embark says neither drives matchmaking.
These are the studio’s descriptions of the system in its May 20, 2026 notes; they do not guarantee a particular opponent or outcome in any individual session.
What changes in the announced PvE toggle test?
Embark announced a limited PvE matchmaking toggle test for October 13–20, 2026. For those test sessions, the studio said player-to-player damage would be disabled, with gameplay focused on the ARC threat and co-op social dynamics. The announcement describes test terms, not a permanent mode.

| Question | Standard PvPvE | Announced October test |
|---|---|---|
| Can another player damage you? | Yes. Standard matchmaking does not guarantee peaceful encounters. | No player-to-player damage in PvE sessions, according to Embark’s announcement. |
| What creates pressure? | ARC machines, other Raiders, scavenging, and extraction choices. | The ARC threat and co-op social dynamics, alongside scavenging, quests, and exploration. |
| Is this a permanent PvE option? | This is the standard experience described in Embark’s May 2026 matchmaking notes. | No. The announced test runs October 13–20, 2026; Embark said the toggle would then be removed. |
Embark said solos, duos, and trios would share PvE test sessions, and PvE play would not affect PvPvE matchmaking rating. The announcement names Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate, and Frigate as conditions excluded from the test. It says feedback and data from the test would inform future decisions, so it does not establish whether or when a permanent PvE option will be available. See Embark’s PvE toggle test announcement for its terms.

Why did Embark announce a PvE test?
In its September 24, 2026 announcement, Embark reported player-preference figures: 37% friendly co-op players, 27% mixed players, and 34% pure PvP players. It also said 51% of the surveyed playerbase expressed interest in a dedicated PvE option; more than 70% of friendly players and 40% of PvP players expressed a desire for fewer hostile encounters. The announcement does not provide survey methodology or an underlying dataset, so these should be read as figures reported by Embark, not independently verified estimates (Embark’s announcement).
