It reconstructs a higher-resolution output from an image the game rendered at a lower internal resolution, potentially freeing GPU capacity for frame rate or other graphics work. It is game-specific, not a universal console switch—and it is distinct from Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), Sony’s separately announced AI-upscaling tier for base PS5.
What PSSR does
PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. It is an image-reconstruction feature for games that support it on PS5 Pro. Rather than rendering every pixel of the final output at full resolution, a game can render an image at a lower internal resolution and have PSSR reconstruct a higher-resolution image from it.

Sony Lead Architect Mark Cerny describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. Sony reported on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles. That figure is Sony’s report as of that date, not a count of games that all use the same settings or produce the same result. Sony’s February 2026 announcement
How AI upscaling reconstructs an image
The basic pipeline is straightforward: the game renders an image, an upscaler uses that image and its learned reconstruction behavior to estimate a higher-resolution version, and the console displays that output. The final image may have more pixels than the internal render, but that does not mean the game natively rendered every output pixel.

- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Ubisoft illustrates the idea with a 1080p input enlarged to 2160p. That is an explanatory example, not a fixed PSSR resolution for every game or scene. Ubisoft’s developers explain that AI upscalers can use learned behaviors that are difficult to reproduce analytically, and that in some circumstances they can work well from lower pre-upscaling resolutions. This is not evidence that AI upscaling always outperforms other methods. Ubisoft’s explanation on PlayStation Blog
Why render below the output resolution?
Rendering fewer pixels can reduce GPU load. A developer may use that headroom to target a higher frame rate or spend more GPU resources on other graphics effects. Some games also use dynamic resolution scaling: the internal resolution can fall in demanding scenes and rise when more GPU capacity is available. The game’s developer chooses how these techniques are implemented.
Where PSSR is available—and how QSSR differs
PSSR is a PS5 Pro capability, and each game must support it. Sony’s 2024 PS5 Pro announcement says enhanced features are available only in select enhanced PS5 games and vary by title. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement

On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) as a distinct AI-upscaling performance tier for the base PS5. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first announced QSSR titles. Sony describes QSSR as using a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation for PS5 performance; it characterizes QSSR as improving image detail and stability on PS5. What the image-quality and performance tradeoffs mean
Upscaling is one part of a game’s rendering budget, not a guarantee of a particular resolution or frame rate. The outcome depends on the internal render resolution, the game’s performance target, its graphics mode, and the developer’s implementation. Reconstruction can affect clarity and may introduce artifacts, so a higher-resolution output label alone does not tell you how the image will look in motion.
Sony says the upgraded PSSR improves stability and fine detail in supported games. Remedy Graphics Technical Director Tatu Aalto has said it responds quickly to visibility changes and improves temporal stability. Ubisoft’s developers have also described their PSSR implementation as more stable than TAA in their assessment and as reducing shimmering. These are vendor and developer observations about particular implementations, not a standardized comparison across games. Sony’s February 2026 announcement Ubisoft’s technical explanation

If a game offers multiple graphics modes or relevant settings, compare them in the same scene and focus on the factors that affect your priorities:
- Frame-rate target: Check whether a mode prioritizes a higher target or a more detailed image.
- Detail and stability in motion: Look at fine textures and edges while moving the camera, not just in a still image.
- Artifacts: Watch for shimmer or ghosting, especially around moving objects and fine details.
- Game-specific controls: Check whether the title exposes a graphics-mode or PSSR-related setting; support and options vary by game.
These observations can help you choose between a particular game’s options, but they do not establish a universal advantage for PSSR over native rendering, TAA, or another upscaler.
What is not publicly specified
Sony’s public description explains pixel-by-pixel analysis and the feature’s compatibility context, while developers offer examples of how upscaling can fit into a rendering pipeline. These sources do not provide a complete technical specification of PSSR’s runtime algorithm, including its neural-network architecture, training data, exact frame inputs, or proprietary hardware pipeline. Claims about those implementation details would go beyond what Sony and the cited developers have publicly established.
