Choose Kubuntu if you want the KDE Plasma desktop, its customization approach and KDE apps such as KDE Connect. Choose Ubuntu if you prefer Ubuntu Desktop’s defaults. Both are official Ubuntu flavors built on the Ubuntu ecosystem; the main difference is the desktop experience and included applications, not a universally better or faster system.
What is the difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu?
Ubuntu and Kubuntu are official Ubuntu flavors. Canonical describes flavors as versions of Ubuntu that choose their own default applications and settings while drawing on the Ubuntu archive. They are related distributions, not unrelated operating systems.

Choose Ubuntu if you want Ubuntu Desktop’s defaults
If you are content with Ubuntu Desktop’s default interface and applications, choose Ubuntu. There is no evidence here that one flavor is universally easier, faster or better; the meaningful distinction is which desktop and default apps suit you.
How do release and support periods compare?
Ubuntu releases a new version every six months. Long-term support (LTS) releases arrive every two years. Canonical’s published policy gives Ubuntu LTS releases five years of standard security maintenance for packages in the Main component; interim releases receive nine months of updates. Those are Ubuntu lifecycle figures, not a guarantee that Kubuntu has the same support end date.
Canonical says flavors generally support LTS releases for three years, with exceptions. Check the support information for the specific Kubuntu release you plan to install rather than transferring Ubuntu’s published date to Kubuntu.

Both flavors are distributed as ISO installation images.
