Before downloading a Nintendo Switch game for a young child, check its local age rating, read the content descriptors, and look separately for online, privacy, and purchase features. Then decide whether those details fit your child and household: a rating is a useful guide, not a complete description or a substitute for a parent’s judgment.
Check the rating used in your country
Start with the rating shown for the game in your region. Nintendo advises parents to use the software rating system for their country (Nintendo’s information for Switch parents). In the United States and Canada, the ESRB system uses categories such as E and E10+ to indicate suggested age appropriateness. Other countries use their own rating systems, so do not treat an ESRB label as universal.

Use the age category as an initial screening signal, not as a guarantee that every element will suit your child. Nintendo puts the decision in context: “Parents are best suited to decide what is appropriate for their family members” (Nintendo Online Safety).

Read descriptors and the detailed rating summary
After checking the category, read the content descriptors. These identify content that may have contributed to the rating or may matter to a parent, giving more context than the age label alone. ESRB explains its categories and descriptors in its Ratings Guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
When available, open the title’s detailed rating summary as well. ESRB says summaries provide additional context and are available for many physical games. If you still need a clearer picture, gameplay footage or reviews can help you judge the game’s tone and play style, though they may be less systematic than rating information. ESRB also offers guidance on selecting appropriate video games.
Check online features and purchases separately
A low age category does not mean a game has no online or purchase features. ESRB notices can flag user interaction, location sharing, unrestricted internet access, and in-game purchases. These interactive elements are separate from the age-rating assignment; they do not change the assigned age category. Check each notice and consider what it means for your child and your household rules.

ESRB describes the distinction between ratings and interactive elements in its overview of the rating system and Ratings Guide.

|---|---|
| Regional age category | Use the rating system for your country; categories are not interchangeable across regions. |
| Content descriptors and summary | These give context about content that the age category cannot convey on its own. |
| Online, location, and internet-access notices | These identify features that may affect privacy and your rules for interaction. |
| Purchase notices, including random-item notices where displayed | These help you assess whether spending features fit your household’s expectations. |
| Fit with the child and household rules | The same game may be acceptable for one child or family and unsuitable for another. |
Use Nintendo’s controls to set boundaries
Nintendo Switch parental controls can restrict software by age and limit communication. The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app also offers play-time limits and gameplay history. Nintendo documents setup and adjustment in How to Set Up, Adjust, or Remove Parental Controls on Nintendo Switch.
eShop viewing and purchase restrictions are managed through a parent or guardian Nintendo Account for a supervised account. Some controls apply system-wide, so Nintendo advises choosing settings with the youngest user in mind when a console is shared. Controls can support your decision, but they do not replace checking what a particular game contains.

Talk with your child about privacy
Nintendo advises parents to tell children not to share identifying information online, including their name, address, email address, or phone number. A brief conversation about what to keep private can complement the settings you choose, particularly if a game includes online interaction.
What rating statistics can—and cannot—tell you
ESRB reports that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable games in 2024 were E or E10+. That is a share of ratings assigned, not a share of games children play and not a measure of game quality. ESRB also reports that, according to Hart Research Associates in 2025, 83% of parents with children who play video games were aware of ESRB ratings, and 77% of parents with children who play video games regularly checked ratings before buying. These figures describe reported awareness and checking habits; they do not establish whether a particular game suits a particular child. ESRB publishes these figures on its ratings page.
