PSSR means PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, Sony’s higher-tier upscaling feature for PS5 Pro. Sony says QSSR is streamlined to run on PS5, but has not published a direct, measured comparison showing how its image quality or performance compares with PSSR.
What QSSR does on PS5
Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling them. According to Sony, PSSR’s computational demands had previously made that experience impractical on the standard PS5. QSSR is intended to bring AI-guided upscaling to that console as a more performance-focused tier.

Sony identifies two design choices behind QSSR: a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5. The company says QSSR improves image detail and stability. Those are qualitative claims: Sony’s announcement does not provide resolution targets, frame-time costs, image-quality measurements, or a controlled comparison with PSSR. Sony’s QSSR announcement describes it as an additional graphics option, not an automatic feature for every PS5 game.
QSSR and PSSR compared
| Question | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Quick Spectral Super Resolution | PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution |
| Console Sony associates it with | PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| How Sony describes it | A performance tier of AI upscaling, using a streamlined neural network and a performance-tuned implementation | An AI library that analyzes game frames pixel by pixel while upscaling; Sony calls it the gold standard on PS5 Pro |
| Stated image benefits | Sony says it improves image detail and stability | Sony says its March 2026 upgrade improves fine detail and motion stability, with more precise reconstruction and developer flexibility |
| What is not established | No published benchmark, exact hardware cost, or complete supported-game list in the announcement | No matched comparison with QSSR in the cited announcements; results vary by title |
Sony’s March 2026 PSSR update describes clearer fine details, enhanced image stability, more precise reconstruction, and more flexibility for developers to balance performance and fidelity. It does not establish that PSSR is a particular percentage faster or sharper than QSSR. Sony says results can vary by title and that users can turn off the optional image-quality enhancement if unexpected visual effects appear.

Which games support QSSR?
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR games. Its October 1, 2026 announcement said both were being patched that day to add QSSR as a graphics option on PS5. Sony also said it would make QSSR available broadly to PlayStation developers, but did not publish a complete future-game list. For current support, check the particular game’s latest patch notes.
For context, Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement listed support or planned adoption of PSSR in SILENT HILL 2, SILENT HILL f, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Sony said Crimson Desert would use the upgraded version at launch, while Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 were expected to receive patches in the following weeks. That is a dated announcement list, not a live compatibility database.

What PS5 Pro owners should know
Sony says PS5 Pro owners can enable “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” in system settings for PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. It is an optional enhancement whose results vary by title, not a system-wide setting for every game. It does not apply to QSSR on standard PS5.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The practical distinction is the console and performance tier Sony assigns to each feature: QSSR is designed to bring AI upscaling to PS5, while PSSR remains Sony’s higher-tier option for PS5 Pro. Sony reported on February 27, 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles to that date; that figure concerns PSSR, not QSSR support. Sony’s February 2026 PSSR announcement does not provide a QSSR comparison.

Without matched tests of the same game scenes and output conditions, there is no evidence here to declare one the image-quality or performance winner. A useful comparison would examine fine-detail reconstruction, flicker and stability in motion, visual artifacts, frame-rate behavior, and whether each game lets players choose the feature. Sony and the studios have offered positive impressions, but those are statements from the companies, not independent measurements.
