You can start Windows’ built-in Reset this PC process from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) without signing in or knowing an administrator password. This reinstalls Windows; it does not reveal or bypass the forgotten password. Before starting, back up important files if possible and find the BitLocker recovery key if the PC is encrypted.
Try local-account password recovery first
If you forgot the password for a local Windows account, check the sign-in screen for Reset password. If you set up security questions when creating the account, answer them to create a new password. A password reset disk can also help, but only if you made one before losing access. Microsoft says that if you have no administrator account to change the password and these recovery options are unavailable, you need to reset the device. Microsoft Support’s local-account password guidance also says its support agents cannot retrieve or circumvent a lost or forgotten password.

Start Reset this PC from Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE lets you open the reset flow without signing in. The way to reach it can vary by Windows version and device, so follow Microsoft’s instructions for entering Windows Recovery Environment for your PC. Once there, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
If Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key, you must provide it to continue on the encrypted device. If you cannot find the key, stop before resetting and look for it through the account or organization that manages the device.

Choose what happens to your files
Read the reset options carefully before confirming. The choice determines whether personal files are retained; neither choice preserves installed apps and settings.

“Keep my files” is not a substitute for a backup. If the files are important and you can still access them from another route, copy them somewhere safe before proceeding.

Microsoft warns that the screen may stay black for a long time and that the PC may restart during the process. Do not manually restart or turn off the computer just because the display is blank; interrupting the reset can cause it to fail. Wait for the process to finish and follow any setup prompts that appear.

Use Windows installation media if Reset this PC is unavailable
If recovery options do not resolve the problem, reinstalling Windows with installation media is a separate fallback. Microsoft’s media-creation instructions require a working PC, reliable internet, and a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space. Creating the media deletes the USB drive’s existing contents, so copy anything important off it first. Follow Microsoft’s Windows installation media instructions to create and use the media.
Your computer manufacturer may also provide recovery media for your specific model, potentially including hardware-specific drivers and factory apps. Check the manufacturer’s official support for your device. For a work- or school-managed PC, contact your organization’s IT department before reinstalling; it may have remote recovery tools or device-specific requirements.

Windows version and support note
Microsoft’s reset guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a reset does not change that support status. Menu labels and available recovery options can vary by Windows version and device.
