The report does not explain how Nucleus calculated the split. The remaining 40% was described as teleoperated, so people were still involved in operating the robot.
What Nucleus’s 60/40 figure describes
Interesting Engineering reported on October 2, 2026, that Nucleus founder and CEO Melvin Schwarz had shared factory footage the previous day. The clip was described as nearly two hours and uncut, with pauses and human interventions visible. Nucleus characterized the demonstration as approximately 60% autonomous and 40% teleoperated; the outlet did not independently audit that percentage. Read the report.

The calculation method was not disclosed. It is therefore not possible to tell whether the percentages refer to elapsed time, intervention events, tasks, action steps, or another measure. In particular, the figure does not establish that the robot completed 60% of its tasks unaided or spent 60% of the demonstration without a human stepping in.

The report does not say how many operators were involved, how often they intervened, how quickly they responded, or how much operator time the demonstration required. Those details matter when estimating the labor needed to use a robot on a factory floor.

What “autonomy” means in practice
A catalogue reproducing ISO/TR 9241-810 text describes an autonomous robot as performing behaviours or tasks with a high degree of independence, and a fully autonomous robot as able to work for an extended period without human intervention. That is a general definition, not a calculation method for Nucleus’s percentage; the available text is a third-party catalogue reproduction, not a directly verified official ISO page. See the catalogue reproduction.
In practical terms, a robot is acting autonomously when it selects and executes actions itself; a human is involved when they prompt, correct, reset, or directly steer it. But an autonomy percentage cannot be compared meaningfully without agreed measurement rules. An evaluator would need to say what counts as an intervention, how pauses are handled, and whether the denominator is time, tasks, action steps, or successful cycles. The Nucleus report does not provide those rules.

Does a four-to-six-hour shift mean the robot works alone?
No. In the same report, Schwarz was quoted as saying Nucleus was regularly running four-to-six-hour shifts. That describes the reported duration of a shift, not four to six hours of operation without intervention. The report does not state how much of those shifts was autonomous or how much human support they required. The report distinguishes shift duration from intervention-free runtime.

The report lists parts picking, shelf loading, product handling, and cart transport among Nucleus’s factory applications. It also says the company captures visual observations, depth information, robot motion, contact signals, human corrections, and task outcomes as inputs to improve its AI models. These are details attributed to Nucleus by the outlet, not independently validated measures of performance. Interesting Engineering’s report.

How to judge factory readiness beyond one percentage
A single autonomy figure leaves out much of what a factory needs to know. A useful evaluation separates performance into distinct questions:
- Task success and repeatability: How often does the robot complete a clearly defined job correctly over repeated cycles?
- Intervention burden: How often must a person prompt, correct, reset, or teleoperate it, and how much operator time does that take?
- Recovery: Can it resume after a dropped part, obstruction, disturbance, or change in an object’s placement?
- Transfer: Does performance hold across different objects, layouts, and operating days?
- Operational reliability: What are its uptime, maintenance needs, and serviceability during sustained operation?
- Safety and integration: Can it operate safely around workers and fit into the factory’s workflow?
The available sources provide no comparable quantitative scores for these measures. Boston Dynamics’ account of Atlas’s development discusses perception, gripper design, manipulation testing, teleoperated demonstrations, and application readiness. It says industrial usefulness also depends on robustness, serviceability, and scalability, alongside autonomy. That is the company’s account of its own robot, not an independent comparison or a head-to-head benchmark against Nucleus. What the figure supports—and what it does not
The nearly two-hour footage, as described in the report, shows sustained factory work in a human-in-the-loop setting, including pauses and interventions. The 60/40 split is Nucleus’s approximate characterization of that particular demonstration, with no disclosed measurement basis. It does not establish a standardized autonomy score, autonomous runtime, performance across a full shift, or readiness across factories.
