For comparing window, shelf, and tabletop locations, start with a phone light-meter app and take readings at leaf level. If you want repeatable measurements, a handheld lux or foot-candle meter is a practical upgrade. For assessing supplemental grow lights, a PAR/PPFD meter—or an app that estimates PPFD—can be more relevant to plants, but app readings are not a guarantee of accuracy.
Which kind of light meter do you need?
Choose according to the decision you want to make: comparing spots in your home, repeating measurements over time, or evaluating light from a grow fixture. A meter helps you understand the light available to a plant; it does not establish the right exposure for every species.

| Tool | Best suited to | What it reports | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone light-meter app | A low-cost first pass or comparing locations with the same phone | Often lux or foot-candles; some apps also offer estimated PPFD or DLI | Accuracy depends on the phone sensor and calculation method. Treat PPFD from an app as an estimate unless validated for your setup. UF/IFAS; Photone App Store listing |
| Handheld digital light meter | Repeatable home comparisons and placement decisions | Lux or foot-candles | These are human-vision-weighted illuminance units, not direct measurements of plant-usable light. A basic meter is not automatically a PPFD meter. UF/IFAS; Iowa State Extension |
| PAR/PPFD quantum meter | Evaluating supplemental grow lights when plant-relevant measurement matters | PPFD: photosynthetic photon flux density, or PAR reaching a surface per unit area per second | It can be costly for casual houseplant use, and correct settings for the light source still matter. What lux, foot-candles, PPFD, and DLI tell you
Lux and foot-candles
Lux and foot-candles measure illuminance as weighted for human vision. They are useful for comparing ordinary indoor locations, but they do not directly represent the light plants use for photosynthesis. One foot-candle equals 10.76 lux, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s December 2023 guidance. Iowa State Extension
PPFD and PAR
PPFD measures photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) reaching a surface. It is more directly relevant when assessing the light delivered by a grow fixture. A lux-to-PPFD conversion is not universal: different light sources have different spectra, so use a conversion factor supplied by the fixture manufacturer or an appropriate source-specific table or calculator. DLI
Daily light integral (DLI) expresses the total light received over a day. For supplemental-light planning, it can be calculated from PPFD and lighting hours: DLI = PPFD × hours × 0.0036. This calculation helps compare duration and intensity; it is not a universal houseplant target. Iowa State Extension
What to look for in an app or meter
Phone apps
- Check which units the app reports: lux, foot-candles, or estimated PPFD and DLI.
- Look for device compatibility and whether the app provides a light-source setting or calibration option.
- Prefer a workflow that makes it easy to take repeat readings at leaf level and, if useful, record or map them.
- Check the current app-store listing for features and any costs; these can change. For example, Photone’s Apple App Store listing advertises PAR/PPFD, DLI, lux, foot-candle measurement, logging, and mapping. That is the vendor’s listing, not independent evidence of accuracy. Photone App Store listing
Handheld meters
- Confirm the displayed unit and the stated accuracy.
- If you specifically need plant-oriented measurement, check that the instrument actually measures PPFD; a lux or foot-candle display alone does not.
- For supplemental lighting, check whether the meter supports calibration or source settings for the fixture type, such as LED or fluorescent.
There is no established universal accuracy ranking for houseplant apps across phones and light spectra. The University of Florida IFAS Extension notes that phone-app accuracy varies by device and calculation method; apps can still be useful for approximating differences between light levels. UF/IFAS

How to take readings that help with plant placement
- Measure where the leaves are. Hold the phone sensor or meter at the height and position of the foliage rather than measuring from the floor or several feet away. Iowa State Extension
- Keep comparisons consistent. Use the same device, position, and orientation at each location. Compare at the same time of day, or sample across the period when the plant receives light.
- Set the source correctly for a grow light. Select the meter’s appropriate source or calibration setting, such as LED or fluorescent, when available. Iowa State Extension
- Check coverage, not just the center. If you are evaluating how evenly a fixture lights a shelf or growing area, measure several points and average them instead of relying on one reading. Iowa State Extension
- Interpret the result for the plant and the conditions. Window direction, season, weather, and outdoor shade change available light. Use species-specific care guidance and observe the plant’s response rather than treating one measurement as a complete care prescription. UF/IFAS; Iowa State Extension
How to interpret a home reading
UF/IFAS gives a broad mid-day guide for houseplant locations: 25–100 foot-candles for low light, 100–500 for medium, 500–1,000 for high, and over 1,000 for direct sunlight. These are general categories, not species-specific prescriptions; conditions and measurement location affect what a reading means. UF/IFAS

For many home gardeners, a basic handheld meter can be sufficient for comparing locations: UF/IFAS says a handheld digital meter accurate to one foot-candle is suitable for houseplants. If you are deciding where to move a plant, relative readings taken consistently can be more useful than chasing a single supposedly perfect number. Iowa State Extension describes trial and error as a straightforward approach for most home gardeners. UF/IFAS; Iowa State Extension
Quick Recap
Best Value
- INSTANT READINGS, NO LAG (4X FASTER THAN STANDARD METERS): Our advanced chip delivers a rapid sampling rate of 8 times per second — while most standard meters on the market sample only 2 times per second, leaving you guessing during flicker or fast-changing light. Ideal for catching flickering lights or measuring dynamic environments where standard 2-3s response meters fail.
- Optimized for Plants & LEDs: Don't rely on generic meters that drift on modern bulbs. This device features Light Source Correction Coefficients, allowing you to calibrate specifically for LEDs (White/Red/Warm) and standard lights. Perfect for gardeners optimizing PAR/Lux for orchids, succulents, and indoor hydroponics to prevent leaf burn or stunted growth.
- 270° Rotation & HD Color Visibility: Stop struggling to read dark monochrome screens in tight corners. Our Vibrant HD Color Display stays clear in any lighting, and the 270° Rotatable Sensor lets you face the light source while the screen faces you—eliminating body shadows that ruin measurement accuracy. (Note: Sensor rotates Right-Side only).
