power.exe is not the current Windows power-management command. On modern Windows, Microsoft documents powercfg.exe for power plans, sleep and wake diagnostics, energy reports, and battery reports. The name power.exe usually points to the old MS-DOS utility, a legacy software reference, or a file that merely shares the name. Because Microsoft has documented malware using power.exe as a filename, do not judge a copy by its name alone.
Check the complete path, publisher signature, and Microsoft Defender results before opening, deleting, or excluding the file. Then use the manual troubleshooting sequence below to separate a power-setting problem from a driver, hardware, Windows, or malware problem.

What power.exe originally was
The original POWER.EXE belonged to MS-DOS 6.0, 6.2, 6.21, and 6.22. It was loaded as a device from CONFIG.SYS, detected idle activity, and provided power-management status on systems with suitable BIOS support. A typical historical entry was device=c:dospower.exe.
Microsoft’s archived documentation says POWER.EXE detected whether a system had an APM-compliant BIOS and adapted accordingly. APM, or Advanced Power Management, was a pre-ACPI standard used by many older computers. That historical detail explains why the program appeared in DOS startup configuration rather than as a normal Windows desktop process.

References in DOS manuals, old screenshots, virtual-machine images, and legacy software therefore do not prove that an executable with the same name in a current Windows installation is genuine. The old DOS program and the modern Windows command-line utility have different roles and should not be substituted for one another.
What the old “Power Manager (POWER.EXE) Not Installed” message means
In the archived DOS documentation, that message appeared when POWER.EXE had not been installed in CONFIG.SYS. The historical fix was to add the appropriate device line, such as device=c:dospower.exe, in the DOS environment that expected it. It describes a DOS configuration state, not a requirement for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If modern software displays that wording, identify the software first. It may be running in a DOS emulator, compatibility layer, or an old installer. Record the exact message and the file path it references before changing system files. Adding a DOS device entry to a current Windows installation will not install Microsoft’s modern power-management tools.
What Windows uses today: powercfg.exe
Microsoft describes powercfg.exe as the supported tool for controlling power plans, also called power schemes, available sleep states, individual-device power states, and common energy-efficiency or battery-life analysis. It is built into Windows, so you do not need to download a replacement executable from a file repository.
Open Command Prompt (Administrator) when a command requires elevation. Run only the command that matches your symptom, and save or copy the output before making changes. The command itself is not a malware scan and cannot prove that an unrelated power.exe is safe.
| Command | Purpose | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
powercfg /list |
Lists configured power schemes. | Confirm that Windows can see the plans you expect and note their identifiers before changing anything. |
powercfg /getactivescheme |
Shows the active scheme. | Useful when a plan change appears not to take effect or battery behavior differs from expectations. |
powercfg /requests |
Enumerates application and driver power requests. | Entries can explain why the display does not time out or the computer will not sleep. An entry is evidence of a request, not automatically proof that the listed program is defective. |
powercfg /lastwake |
Reports the source of the most recent wake transition. | Use it soon after an unexpected wake, then investigate the named device, process, or scheduled activity. |
powercfg /energy |
Analyzes common energy and battery-life problems and creates an HTML report. | Run while the computer is idle with no open programs or documents so normal activity does not distort the report. |
powercfg /batteryreport |
Creates an HTML report of battery-use characteristics over the system’s lifetime. | Compare reported usage and capacity trends with the date your battery symptoms began. |
powercfg /hibernate on or powercfg /hibernate off |
Enables or disables hibernation. | Use only when you understand that changing hibernation affects available sleep and resume behavior. |
These commands diagnose or change supported power settings without replacing a system file. They are the right starting point for sleep, wake, hibernation, and battery symptoms. Do not download a replacement power.exe from an unofficial DLL or “system-file” site.

| Modern troubleshooting role | Usually none unless legacy software specifically requires it | First-line diagnostic tool for supported Windows power symptoms |
Is a particular power.exe safe?
There is no safe verdict from the filename alone. A legitimate historical DOS copy, an application component, and malware can all be named power.exe. Treat the path, signature, creation context, and security-scan result as the evidence.

- When the item appears in Task Manager, right-click it and choose Open file location. If the process exits too quickly, look for the path in the alert, event details, startup entry, scheduled task, or service that launched it.
- In File Explorer, note the complete path and open Properties. Check the Digital Signatures tab when it is present and record the stated publisher. A missing signature is a reason to investigate, not conclusive proof of malware.
- Look at when the file appeared and what launches it. A newly created Startup entry, scheduled task, or service deserves more scrutiny than an old file in a known DOS environment.
- Compare the path with the event that triggered the message: boot, login, sleep, shutdown, or a particular application. A path in a user-writable folder combined with an unexplained startup entry is a warning sign, but it is not by itself proof of malware.
- Do not trust an icon, filename capitalization, or a familiar-looking description. Those details can be copied; the full path, validated publisher, and scan result carry more weight.
Scan before you trust or delete it
Microsoft Security Intelligence lists power.exe among filenames used by Trojan:Win32/WipMBR.B. That threat can overwrite the master boot record and other files, so an alert involving this name should be treated as a security incident rather than a harmless missing-DOS component.
Use Microsoft Defender with current security intelligence. Start a full scan; if unwanted software persists or returns, use Microsoft Defender Offline. Defender attempts to block malware before it infects a device, but a clean quick scan is not a reason to ignore a suspicious path or persistence entry.
Do not add the file to Defender exclusions merely because an alert names power.exe. If Defender detects it, quarantine it through Defender and investigate persistence locations such as Startup, scheduled tasks, and services. Disconnecting a potentially compromised computer from sensitive networks while you contain it can limit exposure. If the computer contains important data, avoid repeatedly booting a suspicious disk until you have considered backup and professional incident-response advice.
Why you should not delete it immediately
Deleting an unverified executable can remove evidence, break a legacy application, or damage a boot or startup sequence. First preserve the path, file properties, signature status, alert name, and scan result. A file that is confirmed malicious should be quarantined or removed through the security tool and followed by a persistence check. A file that is merely an old DOS copy should be left alone if you still use the DOS environment; it is not a reason to install it into modern Windows.

Manual fix procedure for power.exe errors
1. Capture the exact symptom
Write down the complete error text, any stop code, the executable path, and when the message appears. Note whether it happens during boot, login, sleep, wake, shutdown, or while one application is running. Record recent driver, firmware, hardware, Windows, or software changes. This information prevents a sleep problem from being treated as a malware problem, or a malware alert from being dismissed as an old DOS message.
2. Verify the executable before changing anything
- Open Task Manager and use Open file location for the process, if it is running.
- Inspect the file’s Properties and Digital Signatures information. Record the publisher and whether the signature validates.
- Run a Defender scan. For a suspicious or detected file, do not launch it, do not create an exclusion, and do not download another copy from the internet.
- Check Startup, Task Scheduler, and Services for an entry that launches the file. An unexplained persistence entry should be investigated after containment.
3. Run the supported power diagnostics
Open Command Prompt (Administrator) and run the commands that match your symptom.
- For a sleep or display-timeout problem, run
powercfg /requests. Review the application, driver, and service sections for a request that remains active. Close or reconfigure the named application, or update, disable, or roll back the implicated driver after confirming the change fixes the request. - For an unexpected wake, run
powercfg /lastwakeimmediately after the event. Use the reported source to focus Device Manager, firmware, or scheduled-task checks rather than changing every power setting at once. - For general energy or battery complaints, close open programs and documents, leave the computer idle, and run
powercfg /energy. Open the generated HTML report and follow its identified settings or device leads. Repeat after a targeted fix if you need to verify that the warning disappeared. - For battery history, run
powercfg /batteryreportand review the generated HTML report for lifetime usage characteristics and changes that match the date symptoms began. - Run
powercfg /listandpowercfg /getactiveschemewhen you suspect the wrong plan is active. Make a note of the scheme before changing it so you can restore the previous state.
4. Update Windows, firmware, and drivers
Install pending Windows updates and applicable firmware updates. In Device Manager, inspect devices implicated by the report or the symptom, especially recently changed hardware. Microsoft’s stop-error guidance recommends updating, disabling, or rolling back an implicated driver. Roll back when the problem began immediately after an update; update when the driver is old, corrupted, or missing and the hardware vendor provides a supported release. Avoid driver-download sites that bundle unrelated installers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Test hardware and memory
For crashes, freezes, unexplained restarts, or power loss, run the hardware and memory tests supplied for your computer. Remove recently added hardware and retest. A power-related process name does not establish that the power supply, battery, memory, or motherboard is healthy; those components need their own tests. If a test reports a failure, record the exact component and code before replacing parts.
6. Use Safe Mode to separate Windows startup from hardware
If Windows repeatedly restarts, try Safe Mode. If the symptom disappears there, a third-party driver, service, or startup program becomes more likely. Re-enable recent changes one at a time and retest. If the symptom remains in Safe Mode, hardware, firmware, core Windows components, or malware require closer attention. Safe Mode is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent repair.
7. Keep enough free disk space
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping roughly 10–15% of the system disk free while investigating stop errors. Check available space before collecting dumps, installing updates, or running recovery actions. This is a troubleshooting requirement, not a promise that deleting arbitrary files will improve performance. Remove only files you can identify safely, and preserve logs or dumps needed for diagnosis.

8. Use System Restore when the timing is clear
If the problem began after a driver, application, or configuration change and earlier checks did not help, use System Restore to return Windows to an earlier restore point. Choose a point before the change and review the affected programs before confirming. System Restore does not substitute for malware containment; a suspicious executable still needs a Defender scan and persistence review.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →9. Escalate recurring stop errors
Microsoft reports that, among the stop errors it analyzed, 70% were attributed to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% remained unknown. Those figures describe Microsoft’s analyzed cases, not a guarantee about an individual computer. They show why a user-mode process name is rarely the root cause of a blue screen.
If ordinary updates, Safe Mode, hardware tests, malware scans, and System Restore do not identify the cause, preserve the stop code and any available dump files for professional analysis. Microsoft lists Advanced Windows Debugging, first edition as an advanced reference; dump analysis is optional for routine powercfg diagnosis, not a prerequisite. You do not need to buy a book or specialized repair utility to run the built-in checks.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every power.exe is malware: the name has a legitimate MS-DOS history, but a modern copy still requires path, signature, and scan verification.
- Assuming every power.exe is safe: Microsoft has documented malware using that filename, including WipMBR.B.
- Downloading a replacement file: current Windows uses
powercfg.exe; unofficial replacement downloads can introduce malware or an incompatible binary. - Deleting before documenting: preserve the path and alert details so you can distinguish a broken legacy program from persistence.
- Changing every power option at once: collect
powercfgoutput first, then make one targeted change so you know what helped. - Blaming a blue screen on the visible process: Microsoft says the root cause of stop errors is rarely a user-mode process.
- Ignoring storage space: keep approximately 10–15% free while troubleshooting updates, dumps, and recovery.
How to decide whether the problem is fixed
- The same sleep, wake, battery, or restart scenario no longer reproduces after the targeted change.
powercfg /requestsno longer shows the unwanted blocker, or the listed request now matches an application you intentionally left running.powercfg /lastwakeidentifies an expected source after testing, rather than an unexplained device.- Defender reports no active detection after a full scan and, when needed, an Offline scan.
- The executable’s path and signature are documented, and no unexplained Startup, scheduled-task, or service entry launches it.
- Windows remains stable through several normal sleep, wake, shutdown, and restart cycles.
Do not call the issue solved solely because an error dialog disappeared once. Power problems can be intermittent, and a malicious file can return through persistence even after the visible process closes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is power.exe in Task Manager?
It may be the historical MS-DOS POWER.EXE, a legacy application component, or an unrelated file using the same name. Open its file location, inspect the publisher and signature, and scan it with Microsoft Defender before deciding whether it is legitimate.
Is power.exe a virus or a Windows file?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Microsoft has documented Trojan:Win32/WipMBR.B using power.exe as a filename, so a suspicious path or Defender detection requires containment and scanning. A known DOS copy in a DOS environment is a different case.

What is the difference between power.exe and powercfg.exe?
POWER.EXE was an MS-DOS 6.x APM utility loaded through CONFIG.SYS. powercfg.exe is Microsoft’s supported Windows command-line tool for power schemes, sleep and wake diagnostics, energy analysis, hibernation, and battery reports.
Why do I get “Power Manager (POWER.EXE) Not Installed”?
That wording comes from archived DOS documentation and means the DOS utility was not installed through CONFIG.SYS. Identify the old program or emulator showing the message; it is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 requirement.
Can I delete power.exe?
Do not delete it based only on its name. Document the path, signature, launch entry, and Defender result first. Quarantine a confirmed malicious file through Defender; leave a legitimate DOS copy alone if legacy software still needs it.
Which powercfg command checks why Windows will not sleep?
Run powercfg /requests in an elevated Command Prompt. It lists application and driver requests that can prevent display timeout or sleep. Investigate the named item rather than changing every power setting at once.
How do I find what woke my PC?
Run powercfg /lastwake soon after the unexpected wake. Use the reported source to focus Device Manager, firmware, or scheduled-task checks.
Do I need paid repair software to fix a power.exe error?
No paid tool is required for the core checks. Windows includes powercfg and Microsoft Defender, and Microsoft’s stop-error sequence also uses updates, Safe Mode, hardware tests, and System Restore. Optional utilities cannot replace malware scanning or hardware diagnosis.
