Polyphony Digital is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s wholly owned Japanese game studio that creates and operates the Gran Turismo driving-simulation series. The company was established on April 2, 1998, when Sony separated its Gran Turismo production team into a dedicated studio. Kazunori Yamauchi, Gran Turismo’s creator, remains its representative director and president.
The studio is more than a name attached to a racing game. It combines console-game development with ongoing service operation, organized competitive racing linked to the FIA, and artificial-intelligence research such as Gran Turismo Sophy. Its latest flagship release is Gran Turismo 7, launched in 2022.

What Polyphony Digital is
Polyphony Digital Inc. is a first-party software developer inside Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). Its official company description says it plans and develops home-console game software and operates related services. In practical terms, that makes Polyphony the developer responsible for Gran Turismo’s technology, content and player-facing ecosystem rather than an outside contractor hired for one title.

“Polyphony Digital” is therefore the studio’s corporate name; “Gran Turismo” is the game series it makes. The two names are closely associated because the company has concentrated almost all of its public identity and flagship production around that franchise.
How the studio began
Polyphony’s origins predate the company itself. In 1992, while beginning his career in the games industry, Yamauchi created the initial project plan for Gran Turismo. He later recalled: “Back in 1992, Gran Turismo was the first project plan I created out of close to 100 others I came up with when I first started my career in this industry, so it means a lot to me.”
Sony’s Gran Turismo production team continued developing the concept until the first game reached the original PlayStation in 1997. Sony then split that internal team into a separate company within its corporate structure in 1998. The company page gives the precise establishment date as April 2, 1998; Sony’s corporate timeline records the split-off in April of that year.

Is Polyphony Digital the same as Gran Turismo?
No. Polyphony Digital is the company; Gran Turismo is its franchise. A useful analogy is that a film studio and a film series can share an identity without being the same thing. Polyphony employs the teams and owns the development process, while each Gran Turismo release is a product made and operated by that studio for PlayStation platforms.
This distinction also explains why the company can work on activities that are not simply another boxed game. Its responsibilities include related services, organized competition and technology collaborations. Those activities support the Gran Turismo ecosystem while remaining part of Polyphony’s wider studio work.

Who is Kazunori Yamauchi?
Kazunori Yamauchi is both Gran Turismo’s creator and Polyphony Digital’s president. His dual role links the original design idea to the company that has developed the series for decades. The 1992 project plan was one of roughly 100 ideas he had created early in his career, but it became the one Sony chose to pursue as a major PlayStation production.
Yamauchi’s position is not merely historical. Polyphony’s company information identifies him as representative director and president, meaning he is the named executive responsible for the studio as a corporate entity as well as its best-known creative figure.
What games has Polyphony Digital made?
Polyphony Digital’s defining software output is the Gran Turismo series. The available official information identifies the original Gran Turismo, released on December 22, 1997, and Gran Turismo 7, released in 2022, as key points in that history. The studio is publicly characterized by its work on the franchise rather than by a broad catalogue of unrelated game series.
| Game or body of work | Release information established by official material | Role in Polyphony’s catalogue |
|---|---|---|
| Gran Turismo | PlayStation release on December 22, 1997 | The original title that grew out of Yamauchi’s 1992 plan and established the studio’s simulation approach. |
| Gran Turismo series | Long-running PlayStation franchise; individual entries are not all dated in the supplied official summary | Polyphony’s central development and service portfolio, built around detailed cars, tracks and driving systems. |
| Gran Turismo 7 | 2022 flagship release | The current named mainline entry and the consumer product used for the first global Gran Turismo Sophy release in 2023. |
Because Polyphony’s identity is so tightly tied to Gran Turismo, a list of unrelated titles would give a misleading impression of the company. Its work is better understood as a long-running, expanding platform of games and services than as a conventional publisher with many separate franchises.
What makes Polyphony’s games distinctive?
Simulation and authenticity
PlayStation describes Gran Turismo as a driving simulator built around detailed cars and tracks. That emphasis affects the studio’s priorities: vehicle representation, circuit detail and the behavior of a car on the track are central to the experience. The official material supports describing this as a design focus, but it does not establish an objective ranking against other racing developers.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

PlayStation integration
As an SIE studio, Polyphony develops for Sony’s home-console ecosystem. Its company description specifically covers home-console software and related services, while PlayStation Studios presents Gran Turismo as one of its long-running first-party properties. This relationship gives the series a consistent platform identity instead of positioning it as a neutral multi-platform racing brand.

The FIA Gran Turismo Championships were established in 2018. Their existence shows that Polyphony’s work extends into organized esports-style competition connected with the FIA. PlayStation also describes the broader series as having expanded into real-life racing through Gran Turismo Academy, linking in-game driving to opportunities outside the software itself.
Artificial-intelligence research
Gran Turismo Sophy is the result of a collaboration among Sony AI, Polyphony Digital and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony’s announcement covered Sophy’s first global release for Gran Turismo 7 in 2023. The project demonstrates how the studio can serve as a practical environment for advanced driving-agent research: AI developed through a Sony collaboration can be introduced into a commercial Gran Turismo experience rather than remaining only a laboratory demonstration.
How large is Polyphony Digital?
Polyphony’s company information lists approximately 250 employees. That is an approximate figure, not a dated independent census, so it should not be read as a precise current headcount for every development team or office.
The same company information reports more than 100 million cumulative worldwide sell-through units for Polyphony’s PlayStation software as of June 2025. “Sell-through” refers to units sold through to customers, and the figure is cumulative across the studio’s software rather than a sales total for Gran Turismo 7 alone. It is also a worldwide number, not a total for one country or console generation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Polyphony’s studio role affects players
For players, Sony ownership means Gran Turismo’s development is tied directly to PlayStation’s first-party planning rather than to a short-term licensing arrangement. The studio can maintain a long-running technical direction, operate related services and connect the game with Sony-wide initiatives such as Sophy.
The franchise’s scope also explains why a Gran Turismo release can feel like more than a traditional one-time racing purchase. The core product is a driving simulator, but the surrounding work includes competitive championships, real-world racing pathways and experiments in AI opponents. These are separate initiatives, yet they all use Gran Turismo as the common foundation.
That breadth should not be confused with a guarantee about any particular future feature, platform or release date. The official material establishes the studio’s current role and named collaborations; it does not provide a complete roadmap for unreleased Gran Turismo projects.
Common points of confusion

“Who makes Gran Turismo?”
Polyphony Digital develops and operates the Gran Turismo series. Kazunori Yamauchi is the studio’s president and the franchise’s creator.
“Is Gran Turismo a company?”
No. Gran Turismo is the game franchise; Polyphony Digital is the Sony studio that makes it.
“Does Polyphony make games other than racing games?”
The official company description and PlayStation materials supplied for this article center on Gran Turismo and related services. They do not establish a separate catalogue of unrelated game franchises, so the most accurate description is a specialist studio focused on Gran Turismo.

“What does the 100-million figure count?”
It is Polyphony Digital’s reported cumulative worldwide sell-through of its PlayStation software as of June 2025, not a claim that one individual Gran Turismo title sold 100 million copies.
Why Polyphony Digital matters in PlayStation history
Polyphony Digital represents a distinctive first-party model: one studio, one highly recognizable simulation franchise and a development program that has grown into services, competition and AI research. The path from Yamauchi’s 1992 concept to the 1997 PlayStation debut, the 1998 company formation and Gran Turismo 7 in 2022 shows how a single internal project became a permanent Sony studio.
Understanding that structure answers the basic naming question and puts the games in context. When you see Polyphony Digital credited on a Gran Turismo product, you are seeing the Sony-owned developer responsible for the series’ software, its ongoing related services and the technical experiments that extend the franchise beyond ordinary racing-game releases.
