What Is Orbital Angular Momentum Entanglement in Quantum Physics?

Orbital angular momentum entanglement is a shared quantum state of photons’ spatial modes. Here’s how researchers produce, measure, and test it.

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement is a quantum correlation between photons in their spatial modes. The photons share a joint state of OAM, so measurements on one are correlated with measurements on the other in ways that independent photons with predetermined local outcomes cannot explain. Researchers test this by measuring the pair in suitable mode bases; some experiments use Bell-type inequalities.

What orbital angular momentum means for light

Light can carry angular momentum in two distinct forms. Spin angular momentum is associated with polarization, while orbital angular momentum is associated with the spatial distribution and phase of the optical field. In common helical modes, the phase winds around the beam’s axis. OAM is not merely a pattern in a classical beam: a single photon can carry it as a property of its quantum state.

In the paraxial setting—the approximation commonly used for beams that travel mainly in one direction—spin and orbital contributions can be treated separately. For a technical treatment aimed at quantum-optics experimentalists, see The Angular Momentum of Light.

What makes two photons OAM-entangled?

In OAM entanglement, two photons share a joint quantum state in their OAM degrees of freedom. The state of the pair, rather than a separate OAM state for each photon, determines the probabilities of measurement outcomes. Measuring one photon therefore gives information about the other.

A correlation by itself does not establish entanglement. The experiment must measure correlations in appropriate mode bases and use an entanglement test. For example, a 2010 experiment measured arbitrary superpositions in a two-dimensional OAM subspace and reported violations of Bell-type inequalities. That result supports the claim for the tested subspace and method; it does not show that every OAM protocol provides practical communication benefits. Read the APS paper.

How researchers produce and measure OAM-entangled photons

Generate a photon pair

One common approach is spontaneous parametric down-conversion, which produces photon pairs whose OAM values can be correlated. The pair’s properties are then measured to characterize the joint state.

Analyze modes and superpositions

Experiments can select or transform OAM modes before detection. A spatial light modulator can implement transformations that let researchers measure superpositions of modes, not just a single OAM value. Measuring in different bases reveals correlations needed to test entanglement. The apparatus is specialized quantum-optics laboratory equipment, not a routine consumer setup.

Why OAM matters for high-dimensional quantum information

Multiple OAM modes can provide a high-dimensional state space for quantum-information experiments. In a 2012 tunable high-dimensional two-photon OAM-entanglement experiment, Romero and colleagues reported that quantum mutual-information capacity increased from 3.18 to 4.95 bits per photon as the half-width of the OAM-correlation spectrum changed from 10 to 20. These are results from that experiment, not a universal rate or a guaranteed communication capacity. Read the Physical Review A paper.

Usable capacity depends on what a system can generate and detect. Source quality, losses, the modes detectors can resolve, and implementation all constrain what an experiment can demonstrate. A published demonstration specifically describes generation and detection constraints in high-dimensional OAM entanglement. See that Physical Review A demonstration.

A newer use: testing ideas about quantum theory

An Optica paper published on 18 September 2025 reports an OAM-entangled-photon experiment designed to bound the predictive power of physical theories. Its authors interpret the results as constraining broad classes of hidden-variable models. This is a foundations experiment: it should not be read as a commercial application or as resolving every debate about quantum theory. Read the Optica paper.

What OAM entanglement does—and does not—tell you

  • It is a property of a photon pair: the photons share a joint state of spatial modes, and measurements on them show quantum correlations.
  • It can support high-dimensional experiments: OAM provides multiple modes to encode and analyze quantum states.
  • Experimental results are not automatic real-world performance: capacity figures depend on the specific source, modes, measurements, and conditions used.
  • It is not a settled ranking against other encodings: the available evidence does not provide a like-for-like comparison of OAM with polarization or other approaches for range, cost, or robustness.

The cited work establishes experimental and theoretical uses, but it does not establish long-distance communication performance, commercial readiness, or comparative implementation costs.
