What Is OpenBMC? How Open-Source Server Management Firmware Works

What is OpenBMC? It is an open-source firmware stack that runs on a server’s baseboard management controller (BMC), not on the server’s main operating system. How does OpenBMC work? It combines an embedded Linux distribution with hardware-specific services and management interfaces such as Redfish and IPMI, allowing administrators to monitor and control a machine even when its host operating system is unavailable.

OpenBMC is best understood as a customizable foundation rather than a universal firmware image. The exact sensors, fan controls, power functions, APIs and update behavior depend on the hardware target and on the vendor or community implementation that maintains it.

What OpenBMC is—and what it is not

A BMC is a separate embedded computer on a server or related appliance. It has its own processor, memory, firmware and network path, so it can remain reachable while the main server CPU is stopped, the operating system has crashed or the machine is powered off but still connected to standby power.

OpenBMC is the software stack installed on that controller. The project describes it as a Linux distribution for embedded devices with a BMC, including servers, top-of-rack switches and RAID appliances. It is therefore not a replacement for Linux, Windows or another operating system running on the host server. The host performs application and virtualization workloads; the BMC performs management duties alongside it.

The project’s repository summarizes the design this way: The OpenBMC stack uses technologies such as Yocto, OpenEmbedded, systemd, and D-Bus to allow easy customization for your server platform. Those technologies form a reusable base that can be adapted to a particular board’s sensors, power controller, fan hardware, storage and network interfaces.

Why a separate controller matters

  • Out-of-band access: an administrator can reach the management controller without relying on the host operating system or its network services.
  • Hardware visibility: the BMC can read platform sensors and inventory devices through low-level buses and controller interfaces.
  • Power and recovery control: platform-specific services can expose actions such as power cycling, reset and boot selection, subject to what that target implements.
  • Automation: management software can use network APIs instead of logging into each host interactively.

These capabilities are not identical on every OpenBMC system. A target may include only a subset of the project’s services, and a vendor can add, remove or modify components.

How the OpenBMC software stack fits together

OpenBMC combines a build system, an embedded operating environment and platform services. The architecture is layered so that common management functions can be reused while hardware-specific code describes one server family or board.

Layer or technology Role in an OpenBMC system
Yocto and OpenEmbedded Build and customization technologies used to assemble an embedded Linux image and platform-specific packages.
Linux kernel and device support Provides the operating-system foundation and drivers needed to communicate with the BMC’s processor, buses and peripherals.
systemd Manages services, their startup order and runtime state inside the BMC operating environment.
D-Bus Provides internal software interfaces through which services exchange sensor, inventory, power and other management data.
Platform services Translate generic management functions into the exact GPIOs, I²C devices, fan controllers, power units and sensors on a target board.
Network-facing services Expose interfaces such as Redfish and IPMI to administrators and orchestration software.

In practice, a sensor-reading service may obtain a value from a hardware bus, publish it internally over D-Bus, and then make that value available through a management API. A power-control service follows a similar pattern, translating a requested action into the signals expected by that platform. The names and boundaries of services vary by release and target, so this is a conceptual model rather than a promise that every image contains the same daemon set.

Redfish: the modern API path

OpenBMC’s bmcweb component implements the Redfish API. Redfish represents servers and their components as resources that management software can discover and operate over HTTP-based interfaces. A data-center orchestrator can use those resources to read inventory, inspect health, retrieve event information or request supported power operations without using a vendor-specific command syntax.

The project documents targeted Redfish schema resources, but it also warns that the schema document is living and can change. Consequently, an application should not assume that every resource, property or action exists on every OpenBMC build. Check the exact target’s API documentation and discover resources at runtime where possible.

What to verify before relying on Redfish

  • Which Redfish version and schema resources the image exposes.
  • Whether inventory, sensors, event logs, firmware update and power actions are implemented for the exact machine.
  • How authentication, roles and network exposure are configured by the vendor image.
  • Whether the API behavior matches the client or orchestration software you plan to use.

IPMI: legacy and low-level management paths

IPMI remains available on many systems and is another interface an OpenBMC image may provide. The project’s IPMI architecture describes requests as commands and responses transported through channels such as KCS, BT or RMCP+. An IPMI daemon dispatches a command to a handler and checks the caller’s privileges before performing the operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KCS and BT are commonly associated with an in-band path between the host and the BMC, while RMCP+ is a network transport for out-of-band access. The architecture document is versioned and older, however, so it should be treated as a description of the design rather than proof that every current vendor build has exactly the same handlers, channels or privilege model.

IPMI over RMCP+ Network-based management from an administrator or management system. Command support, channels and privilege checks depend on the implementation.
IPMI over KCS or BT In-band communication between the host and its BMC. Requires the relevant host-side and BMC hardware path to be implemented.

What administrators can do with OpenBMC

The practical feature set is platform-dependent, but OpenBMC is designed to support the management tasks that make a BMC useful:

  • Read temperatures, voltages, fan speeds and other sensors.
  • Inspect hardware inventory and component identity.
  • View or generate platform event information.
  • Perform supported power-on, power-off, reset or boot-control actions.
  • Connect management software through Redfish or IPMI.
  • Apply BMC or platform firmware updates when the target’s update mechanism supports them.

Do not infer that all six functions are complete merely because a machine appears in the OpenBMC supported-machines list. The list contains contributed targets, and the project states that the amount of functionality for listed systems may be unknown.

Hardware compatibility: the most important limitation

OpenBMC is not a universal image that can be safely flashed onto any server. A build must match a hardware-specific target: the BMC processor, flash layout, board wiring, sensors, fan controllers, power circuitry and network configuration all matter. Installing an image for a different board can leave the controller inaccessible or, in the worst case, affect hardware-control functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project’s porting guidance gives a concrete warning: a build can provide basic functionality while still having rough edges, such as fans running continuously at full speed. That symptom is not cosmetic. It indicates that thermal-control logic, sensor interpretation or fan-controller integration is incomplete for the platform.

How to judge a supported target

  1. Match the exact model. Confirm the board or server model and revision, not merely the manufacturer or product family.
  2. Read the target documentation. Identify which power, thermal, sensor, inventory, event-log and update functions are actually implemented.
  3. Check maintenance ownership. Systems actively developed and maintained by a vendor are often covered by Jenkins CI testing; a listed target without current maintenance may not receive the same attention.
  4. Confirm interface behavior. Test the Redfish resources and IPMI commands your automation requires.
  5. Validate recovery procedures. Determine how to recover the BMC if an update fails and how to restore the factory image or a known-good build.

The project explicitly disclaims warranty, promised future development and bug-fix guarantees for contributed targets. Treat the supported-machines page as a starting point for investigation, not as a certification of complete production readiness.

Building or porting OpenBMC

Building an image starts with selecting the correct machine target and its metadata in the OpenBMC build environment. Yocto and OpenEmbedded then assemble the bootloader, Linux kernel, libraries, system services and platform applications into an image suitable for that BMC’s storage and boot process.

A port normally requires hardware documentation, access to the board or server, and knowledge of the BMC’s buses and control signals. Engineers must map sensors, fan controllers, power supplies, chassis intrusion inputs, LEDs, flash partitions and network interfaces into the software model. They also need a way to recover the controller during development, such as a serial console or a hardware programmer, because an incomplete image can interrupt normal network access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical port-validation sequence

  1. Build the image for the exact target and verify that the image format and flash layout match the board.
  2. Boot it on a development unit with a recovery path connected.
  3. Confirm serial-console output, network access and service startup.
  4. Check that internal D-Bus objects appear for the expected inventory and sensors.
  5. Compare sensor readings with known-good external measurements.
  6. Exercise fan control under changing thermal conditions; investigate any fan that remains at full speed or fails to respond.
  7. Test power, reset and boot-selection actions only with a controlled recovery plan.
  8. Discover the Redfish tree and run the required API calls.
  9. Test the required IPMI channels and privilege levels.
  10. Repeat the tests after updates and cold boots before placing the image in production.

This process separates “the BMC boots” from “the platform is operationally safe.” Basic boot success does not establish correct cooling, sensor accuracy, power sequencing or management permissions.

Choosing between OpenBMC platforms

If you are selecting hardware for an OpenBMC deployment, compare the complete platform rather than the firmware name alone.

Decision area Questions to answer
Exact target Is the precise server or board model listed, and does the vendor identify an image for that model and revision?
Feature completeness Are thermal control, sensors, inventory, event logs, power operations and updates implemented, or only partially contributed?
Maintenance Who reviews fixes and releases? Is the target actively maintained by a vendor or community team?
Testing Is it covered by continuous integration such as the project’s Jenkins testing, and what does that testing actually cover?
API fit Do the exposed Redfish resources and IPMI commands meet your automation requirements?
Recovery Can you reflash or replace the BMC image without taking unacceptable operational risk?

Operational and access considerations

Because the BMC is reachable independently of the host, place its network access under the same change-control discipline as other infrastructure management planes. Restrict routes to trusted administration networks, create only the roles required for each task, rotate credentials through your normal process and log management actions. The exact controls and names of roles are implementation-specific; verify them in the image’s documentation rather than assuming that two OpenBMC builds expose identical settings.

Keep Redfish and IPMI clients aware of privilege boundaries. An IPMI request can be rejected even when the transport is working if the account lacks the required privilege. Likewise, an API client can encounter a missing Redfish resource because the target does not implement it, not because the network connection failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting common OpenBMC problems

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next action
BMC is unreachable after flashing Wrong target, image layout, network configuration or incomplete boot. Use the serial or hardware recovery path, confirm the exact machine target and restore a known-good image.
Fans run at full speed Incomplete fan-control integration, missing sensors or incorrect thermal policy. Check platform sensor and fan services, verify readings against external measurements and use the vendor’s target guidance.
Redfish client reports a missing property The resource is not implemented on that build or the schema has changed. Discover the target’s Redfish tree and code to the documented resources instead of assuming universal schema coverage.
IPMI command is rejected Unsupported handler, wrong channel or insufficient privilege. Confirm transport, command support and account privilege on that specific image.
Sensor values look implausible Incorrect hardware mapping, scaling or calibration. Compare with an independent measurement and inspect the target’s sensor configuration before automating alerts.

Bottom line for operators and builders

OpenBMC is an open-source, customizable Linux-based firmware stack for a BMC. Its value is out-of-band control and a common foundation for Redfish, IPMI and hardware-monitoring services. Its limitation is equally important: the quality of that experience is determined by the exact hardware target and the people maintaining its integration. Verify model-specific features, test thermal and power behavior, confirm API compatibility and establish recovery procedures before treating an OpenBMC image as production firmware.
