oculusclient.exe is the Windows client executable installed with Meta’s Oculus/Meta Quest PC software. The documented legacy installation folder is C:Program FilesOculusSupportoculus-client. A filename by itself does not prove that a copy is genuine: check its location and digital signature before allowing it to run. If Windows cannot find the file, the safest progression is to verify the installation, try the documented client update workaround when applicable, then perform Meta’s clean uninstall and reinstall procedure.
What oculusclient.exe does
The executable is part of the desktop software that connects a Meta Quest headset to a Windows computer. It provides the PC-side Oculus client used for headset setup, Link functions, updates and related services. Meta’s documented legacy path is C:Program FilesOculusSupportoculus-client. A product migration can place files in another clearly documented Meta location, so judge the path against the version of the PC software actually installed rather than assuming every installation must use one folder forever.

Meta also documented a naming mismatch in which the client was installed as Oculus Client.exe while underlying code referred to Client.exe. Meta said a fix for that issue shipped on December 22, 2025. Consequently, an error mentioning oculusclient.exe can indicate a missing or damaged installation, an update that did not complete, or this particular filename mismatch; it does not automatically indicate malware.
Is oculusclient.exe safe?
A legitimate copy is consistent with a Meta/Oculus installation when both its location and publisher signature check out. Those checks are more useful than the name alone because any program can be renamed to oculusclient.exe.

Check the running file in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes or Details tab, find the Oculus or Meta client process. If it is not running, use File Explorer to locate the file instead.
- Right-click the process and choose Open file location. File Explorer should open the executable’s containing folder.
- Compare the path with
C:Program FilesOculusSupportoculus-client, or with a Meta installation path documented for your migrated product version. A copy inDownloads, a temporary folder, an unexpectedAppDatasubfolder, or another unrelated directory needs additional scrutiny.
Verify the digital signature
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Meta or the expected Meta/Oculus publisher for your installation.
- If the tab is missing, the signature is invalid, or the signer does not match the expected publisher, do not replace the file with a download from a mirror. Treat the result as suspicious until a scan and further investigation establish otherwise.
Scan a suspicious copy
For an unexpected path or failed signature, run a full scan with Windows Security or another reputable antivirus product. Open Windows Security from the Start menu, choose Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start the scan. Review the detection details before quarantining a file so that you know which path and publisher were flagged. Microsoft identifies Windows Security or another antivirus tool as an option for removing malware. Do not assume that a clean scan proves a file is an official Meta build; path, signature and scan results should be considered together.
Why Windows cannot find oculusclient.exe
- Incomplete update: The launcher may still reference an older filename while a newer package is being installed.
- Corrupted or deleted files: A failed update, disk problem, cleanup utility or manual deletion can remove the executable or supporting files.
- Filename mismatch: Meta documented code that referenced
Client.exewhile the installed client usedOculus Client.exe. The fix was reported as shipped on December 22, 2025, but an older or partially updated installation can still expose the mismatch. - Wrong installation path: A migrated installation may not be in the legacy directory, while a shortcut or script still points to it.
- Security software interference: Antivirus or firewall controls can block, quarantine or prevent an update from finishing. A warning or quarantine event should be checked in the security product’s history rather than ignored.
- Permission or profile problems: The client may exist but fail to start because the account cannot access the folder or because per-user data in
AppDatais damaged.
Choose the least disruptive repair first

Fix 1: confirm the installation and update state
- Close the Oculus or Meta PC application and disconnect the headset and Link cable.
- Open File Explorer and browse to
C:Program FilesOculusSupportoculus-client. If the folder is absent, search the drive forOculus Client.exe,Client.exeandoculusclient.exe, then inspect each result’s full path and signature. - If the executable is present in the expected support directory, right-click it and choose Run or create a temporary shortcut only after confirming the signature. Do not run a same-named file found in a download or temporary directory.
- Reconnect the computer to the internet and allow the client to complete any pending update. Restart Windows once, then reconnect the headset and test Link again.
If the client opens but immediately closes, or if the launcher still reports a missing file, continue with the next repair rather than repeatedly launching an unverified copy.

Fix 2: use Client.exe for the documented filename mismatch
This step applies only when Client.exe is in the same oculus-client support folder and the launcher specifically complains that oculusclient.exe is missing. Meta community guidance describes launching Client.exe so it can download and apply the latest update. It is a conditional workaround, not proof that every installation should contain both names.

- Open
C:Program FilesOculusSupportoculus-client(or the verified equivalent for your installation). - Confirm that
Client.exehas the expected Meta/Oculus digital signature. - Make a backup copy of the folder or at least record its contents before changing anything.
- Run
Client.exeand allow it to reach the internet so the updater can apply the current package. - Restart Windows, reconnect the headset and test the original action that produced the error.
Do not rename files to make an error message disappear, overwrite the executable with one copied from another computer, or download a replacement EXE from an unofficial site. A same-named file can be malware or an incompatible build. If Client.exe is absent, unsigned or fails to update, use the clean reinstall procedure instead.

Fix 3: perform Meta’s clean uninstall and reinstall
A clean reinstall removes both the program files and per-user data that can preserve a broken configuration. It is more disruptive than launching an existing client, so use it after checking the path and trying the conditional update workaround.
Before you start
- Save any work and make sure you know the password for the Windows account that will install the application.
- Disconnect the Link cable and headset from the computer.
- Plan to work temporarily without an internet connection during removal, then reconnect only when the reinstall step calls for it.
- If you have custom files in an Oculus folder, copy them to a separate location before deleting anything.
Remove the existing installation
- Disconnect the computer from the internet. Unplug Ethernet or turn off Wi-Fi from the Windows network controls.
- Restart Windows and enter Safe Mode. The exact entry screen varies by Windows version; from Windows recovery options choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, Startup Settings, and restart to select Safe Mode.
- In Safe Mode, open Control Panel, choose Programs and Programs and Features, select the Oculus PC application, and choose Uninstall.
- After the uninstall completes, delete remaining Oculus folders under
C:Program Files. Delete only folders clearly belonging to the Oculus/Meta PC application; do not remove unrelated software directories. - In File Explorer, enter
%LOCALAPPDATA%in the address bar and remove the Oculus folders there. Repeat with%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowand%APPDATA%to remove Oculus folders under Local, LocalLow and Roaming. - Delete
C:OculusSetup-DownloadCacheif it remains.
Install a fresh copy
- Restart Windows normally.
- Reconnect the computer to the internet.
- Download the current PC application using Meta’s official setup tool, not an unofficial mirror or a file supplied by another user.
- Run the installer and let it finish without interrupting the download or rebooting.
- Reconnect the headset only after the PC software is installed, then test the Link connection.
- Open the new installation’s support folder and repeat the path and digital-signature checks if Windows displays another missing-file warning.
If the uninstall entry is missing, Safe Mode still shows locked files, or the installer fails repeatedly, record the exact message and move to log collection rather than deleting unrelated system files.

Fix 4: handle common error branches
“Windows cannot find OculusClient.exe” immediately after an update
Check whether Client.exe exists beside the client files and use the conditional workaround above. If it is not present or the update cannot complete, perform the clean reinstall. Verify that security software did not quarantine a file and that the installer was allowed to access the internet.

The file exists, but the client will not start
Confirm the signature, restart Windows, and run the clean reinstall if the process closes without opening. Do not replace a signed file with a downloaded copy simply because the error text names a different filename.
The headset is detected but Link fails
Close the PC client, disconnect the cable, restart Windows, and reconnect after the client has loaded. If the client executable itself is missing or corrupted, repair the installation first; changing headset settings cannot restore a deleted program file.
The executable is flagged by security software
Pause troubleshooting and inspect the detection’s full path, signer and threat name. A file in the documented support directory with a valid Meta signature is materially different from an unsigned copy in a temporary folder, but neither path nor signature should be ignored when a security product reports a specific detection. Follow the security product’s documented quarantine and review process, then reinstall from Meta’s setup tool if the program files were removed.
Collect Oculus logs for support
When a clean reinstall does not resolve the problem, Meta’s logging utility can package evidence for support. The application includes OculusLogGatherer.exe in the support oculus-diagnostics folder. The documented example path is C:Program Files (x86)OculusSupportoculus-diagnosticsOculusLogGatherer.exe.

- Choose the default option to export the last 24 hours, or select full logs when support asks for a longer history.
- Wait for the ZIP export and locate it on the desktop.
- Keep the ZIP unchanged and provide it to Meta support with the exact error text, Windows version, whether
oculusclient.exe,Oculus Client.exeorClient.exeexists, and the path you found.
Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewall or other Windows protections to obtain logs. If a support technician asks you to test a security-control conflict, restore the protection immediately after the test and document what changed.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Escalate to Meta support when the signed client is missing after a clean reinstall, the installer fails with a repeatable message, logs show a service or permission failure you cannot resolve, or the same mismatch returns on a freshly installed package. Include the exact wording and capitalization of the error, the Windows edition and version, the installation path, signature result, security-software history and the exported log ZIP. These details let support distinguish a missing file from a blocked update, a naming mismatch or a broader installation failure.
