Petabyte-scale systems grow by distributing objects across storage devices and nodes, while software tracks placement, maintains redundancy and handles rebalancing and recovery. That can expand capacity substantially, but it does not guarantee unlimited request throughput, bandwidth or low latency.
What object storage is—and how it differs from files and blocks
An object is a unit of stored data paired with metadata and an identifier within a storage namespace. Applications typically create, retrieve, list or delete objects through an object-storage API. The service or cluster manages where the data resides.

This access model differs from a block device, which presents addressable blocks for a system or application to manage, and from a mounted filesystem, which exposes files and directories through familiar paths. Object namespaces may look like folders in a console or API, but that appearance does not make the underlying access model a traditional filesystem. Applications designed around filesystem operations may need changes to work well with object storage.

Object storage is commonly used for large collections of unstructured data, such as backups, media, logs and data-lake content. Whether it suits a particular application depends on its access pattern, latency needs, object sizes and use of the service’s API.

How object storage scales to petabytes
Self-hosted clusters distribute placement and recovery
In a self-hosted system, adding storage nodes can add raw capacity. Cluster software determines where data and redundant copies or fragments belong, directs requests to the relevant hardware, and responds when nodes or devices change or fail. The operational work includes monitoring health, replacing failed hardware, and allowing the system to rebalance data or recover redundancy.
Ceph documents RADOS as the object store beneath its services. Its architecture describes placement groups, peering, rebalancing, recovery and scrubbing. Those are Ceph-specific mechanisms, not a blueprint for how every cloud provider implements object storage. Ceph’s architecture page is labeled development documentation, so operational details should be checked against the deployed Ceph release. Ceph also notes that OSD hosts need CPU, memory and network capacity for cluster heartbeats, peering, rebalancing and recovery; disks alone do not make a cluster scale.

Managed services hide the hardware, not every limit
With a managed service, the provider operates the storage fleet and abstracts most placement and recovery machinery. Google Cloud describes Cloud Storage as autoscaling and advises gradually increasing request rates for new object-name prefixes or index ranges. Microsoft explains that Azure Storage distributes data and requests across partitions, but concentrated traffic can create a hot partition and cause throttling.

How much can one object or account hold?
“Object size” and “total storage capacity” are different limits. A service may allow a very large account or cluster while imposing a smaller maximum size for any one object. Limits also use different storage concepts and may depend on the service, account conditions or API details.
| Service and scope | Documented limit or guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Storage object | 5 TiB maximum object size | Google Cloud documentation accessed in 2026 says this applies regardless of write method. |
| Azure standard storage account | 5 PiB default maximum account capacity | Microsoft documentation accessed in 2026 says higher capacity and ingress limits may be requested, subject to account and service conditions. |
| Azure block blob | Up to 190.7 TiB under currently listed block limits | Microsoft documentation accessed in 2026. This is a block-blob limit, not a directly equivalent definition of an object-size limit across providers. |
These are provider-specific documented limits, not a universal object-storage standard. Check current documentation and the applicable account type and service conditions before designing around a maximum.

Why capacity does not promise unlimited throughput
Performance depends on how requests are distributed as well as on aggregate capacity. Google Cloud’s 2026 documentation gives approximate initial rates per bucket of 1,000 object writes per second and 5,000 object reads per second, with the service scaling as needed. These are approximate initial rates, not universal hard ceilings; bandwidth limits and repeated writes to the same object name also affect behavior. Google documents a one-write-per-second limit for repeated writes to the same object name.
Azure identifies hot partitions as a source of higher latency and HTTP 500 or 503 responses. Its guidance cautions against concentrated sequential or append-only naming patterns, recommends increasing traffic gradually, and advises exponential backoff when throttled. A large account therefore can still perform poorly if a workload directs too much traffic to a narrow part of its namespace.

- Request concentration: Consider whether many clients will target the same names, prefixes or ranges rather than spreading requests across the namespace.
- Object and request shape: Object size, request size, concurrency and read/write mix influence throughput and latency.
- Service conditions: Performance tier, region, transfer endpoint and bandwidth behavior may matter as much as nominal capacity.
- Recovery and change: In a self-managed cluster, failures and membership changes consume network and compute resources during recovery or rebalancing.
Durability is not availability
Durability describes the design goal of preserving stored data; availability concerns whether a service can be accessed when needed. Neither a durability figure nor redundant storage by itself states retrieval latency, uptime, or recovery-time guarantees. Check the service’s availability commitment, redundancy mode, region and tier separately.
| Service claim | What the provider says | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Storage | At least 99.999999999% designed annual durability | Google’s 2026 documentation attributes the design to erasure coding and redundant pieces across devices. This is Google’s service-design statement, not an independent measurement or a claim about other providers. |
| Amazon S3 | 99.999999999% designed durability, with redundancy across at least three Availability Zones by default | AWS’s 2026 FAQ describes its own S3 service; it is not a universal configuration for object storage. |
AWS’s Amazon S3 documentation says: “S3 has end-to-end integrity checking on every object upload and verifies that all data is correctly and redundantly stored across multiple storage devices before it considers your upload to be successful.” This describes AWS’s stated S3 behavior, not a guarantee about other systems.
Choosing an approach for a petabyte-scale workload
Managed cloud storage shifts fleet operation to a provider; self-hosting gives an organization responsibility for hardware, networking, power, replacements, capacity planning and recovery. Neither approach is automatically cheaper or faster. Compare the system against expected use rather than capacity alone.

- Limits: Verify maximum object size, account or cluster capacity, namespace constraints and relevant API or tier conditions.
- Workload performance: Model request rates, bandwidth, latency, concurrency, object sizes and whether traffic will concentrate on particular names or prefixes.
- Failure design: Review redundancy and failure domains, durability design, availability commitments, geographic replication and recovery expectations.
- Operating responsibility: For self-hosting, plan for hardware lifecycle, network and power capacity, monitoring, rebalancing and recovery. For managed services, confirm what the provider operates and which service conditions still apply to the account.
- Total cost: Include storage, API requests, retrieval, replication, data transfer and operations. Current comparable pricing is not established here, so a cheapest-provider conclusion would be unsupported.
Provider limits and service claims can change. Google Cloud and Microsoft documentation cited above were accessed in 2026; AWS’s S3 FAQ was also accessed in 2026. Confirm the current documentation for the intended region, account type, redundancy option and storage tier before committing an architecture.
