If Fitbit Air will not sync or pair, start with the basics: keep it near your phone, turn Bluetooth on, check Google Health permissions, and make sure Air is charged. Then open Google Health and request a sync. If that fails, restart the phone and Air before clearing the old Bluetooth pairing and setting it up again. For missing notifications, check both the phone and Fitbit settings first; Google’s general notification guide does not list Fitbit Air in its compatibility table, so it does not establish which notification types Air supports.
How Fitbit Air syncing works
Fitbit trackers and watches use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to sync with Google Health. With Air near the phone, opening Google Health should start an automatic sync. You can also request one manually and check the device screen for the last-sync time. Google’s sync guidance describes the general workflow.
Diagnose the problem by layer: phone permissions and power settings, Bluetooth and pairing state, Google Health app state, then Air’s charge and device state. Notifications add controls on both the phone and the Fitbit.
Fix a Fitbit Air that will not sync
1. Check the phone, permissions, and connection
- Keep Air close to the phone and confirm Bluetooth is on.
- Make sure Air is charged and the phone has internet access.
- Confirm Google Health has the required permissions. On Android, Google names Location and Nearby devices permissions; Nearby devices applies to Android 12 and newer.
- Temporarily turn off Battery saver or Bedtime mode if either is enabled. Google says these modes may limit background connectivity.
See Google’s sync troubleshooting steps for its permission and connection checks.

2. Request a manual sync and check its status
Open Google Health while Air is nearby. On the Today screen, pull down to sync, or use Connections → Sync. Open the device screen to see when Air last synced. If it still does not connect, restart both the phone and Air.
3. Restart the phone and Fitbit Air
Restart the phone, reopen Google Health, and try syncing again. To restart Air, connect its charging cable to a USB-C power source, place Air on its charger, and hold the button on the back of the charger for 10 seconds, or until Air’s side status light flashes white. Release the button. Google says restarting turns the device off and on without losing activity data. Follow the Fitbit Air restart instructions.

Fix Fitbit Air notifications that are missing
Check the phone first
- Confirm the phone itself receives the calls, texts, calendar items, or app alerts you expect to see.
- Check lock-screen and per-app notification settings, Bluetooth, and Do Not Disturb.
- Allow Google Health to run in the background; on iPhone, follow the app’s notification setup prompts.
Check Google Health and Air
In Google Health, go to Connections → device → Notifications and follow the setup steps. Also check Air’s notification settings, Do Not Disturb or sleep mode, and whether the device is locked. Google says the phone generally needs to be within 30 feet for Fitbit phone notifications; syncing can also prevent or delay a notification. The Google notification guide covers setup and troubleshooting, including the iPhone-specific option to toggle “Share System Notifications.”

What is not established about Air notification support
Google’s general notification guidance describes calls, texts, calendar items, and app notifications for Fitbit devices, but its displayed compatibility table does not list Fitbit Air. The general guide therefore does not establish which phone-notification categories Air supports. For model-specific confirmation, consult Google’s Fitbit Air guide or contact Fitbit Customer Support.
When to contact support
If Air still will not sync or pair after the checks, restart, and reconnection steps, contact Fitbit Customer Support through Google’s Fitbit Air guide. Avoid a factory reset unless support directs you to use one.
