Decide what must remain yours
Before opening an AI tool, write down what you want the work to say, evoke, argue, or make possible. Keep the central idea, point of view, and decisions about what to include under your control. The Irish Copyright Licensing Agency (ICLA) recommends using generative AI to support work without handing over your thinking or conclusions.

Give AI a narrow, useful task
Ask for one kind of assistance at a time so you can judge the result against a clear need. ICLA identifies tasks such as analyzing patterns in research, exploring explanations, adapting examples for an audience, polishing language, and summarizing your own work. Elsevier’s guidance for books and commissioned content also recommends checking generated material for accuracy, comprehensiveness, and bias.

- Ask for several ways to explain a point you have already chosen.
- Ask for patterns across notes or source material, then check whether the patterns hold.
- Ask for an example tailored to a particular audience, then decide whether it suits the piece.
- Ask for a language polish, but keep or restore phrasing that carries your intended tone.
These are forms of assistance, not a universal formula for preserving voice. The useful test is whether you can clearly evaluate the response and make the final creative choice yourself.
Verify claims, references, and omissions
Treat generated material as a draft or lead, not as evidence. Generative AI can produce fictitious references, and even plausible claims may be inaccurate, incomplete, or biased. ICLA and Elsevier both advise authors to verify outputs and sources.

- Check each factual statement against a reliable source you have opened and read.
- Confirm that every cited work exists and actually supports the claim attributed to it.
- Look for missing context, counterexamples, and perspectives that the response may have left out.
- Remove or rewrite any claim you cannot substantiate or that does not belong in your work.
Do not treat an AI-generated citation as a source until you have verified it independently.
Rewrite and make the final choices
Choose what to keep, change, or discard according to your purpose. Reorganize the material if the structure does not reflect your argument or creative intent, and adapt language to your own style and values. The goal is not to disguise AI involvement; it is to ensure that the finished work expresses choices you actually made.

Evidence about audience reactions is limited. A 2024 study by Angel Hsing-Chi Hwang, Q. Vera Liao, Su Lin Blodgett, Alexandra Olteanu, and Adam Trischler interviewed 19 professional writers and surveyed 30 avid readers. The writers described concern for authenticity and voice; in this study, readers responded positively to experimentation and did not distinguish the presented AI-assisted writing from solo-written work. Those small samples do not establish how all readers—or creators in other disciplines—will respond. Read the study.
Check terms before uploading work
Before submitting drafts, notes, client material, or unpublished work to a tool, examine its terms and data-handling practices. ICLA and Elsevier point authors to issues including confidentiality, rights to submitted content, reuse or training, retention, and restrictions on publishing generated material.

- Does the service allow you to submit this material, and what rights do you have to it?
- Can the provider retain or reuse inputs, including for model training?
- Can you control deletion or retention?
- Are there limits on publishing or otherwise using the output?
- Do your employer, client, collaborator, or publisher impose stricter rules?
If the terms or permissions do not allow you to share the material, do not upload it. The relevant conditions depend on the specific tool and project; no single vendor’s terms should be assumed to apply to another.
Follow the disclosure rules for your project
Disclosure requirements vary by institution, publisher, field, and assignment. Check the rules that actually govern your work instead of assuming one organization’s policy is universal.

Scientific work
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance dated May 28, 2026 concerns disclosure in scientific work. It recommends identifying the content affected, the action taken, the AI tool, the purpose, and human oversight. Its concise structure is “Content Affected + Action Taken + AI Tool + Purpose of AI Use + Human Oversight.” See the CDC guidance.
Elsevier books and commissioned content
Elsevier requires disclosure of AI use in preparing manuscripts for its books and commissioned content, while exempting basic grammar, spelling, and punctuation checks. That is Elsevier’s policy for the stated content types, not a universal rule for every publisher or creative project. Read Elsevier’s policy.
Keep a simple record
Note the tool, what you asked it to do, which material it affected, and how you reviewed the result. A concise record makes it easier to write an accurate disclosure if your publisher, client, or institution requires one.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 summary says that using AI does not automatically prevent a work from being copyrightable. It says AI output may be protected where a human author determines sufficient expressive elements, and that prompts alone are not enough under the Office’s stated conclusion. Register of Copyrights and Director Shira Perlmutter said, “Where that creativity is expressed through the use of AI systems, it continues to enjoy protection.” This is a U.S. copyright summary, not a rule for every jurisdiction or individualized legal advice. Read the Copyright Office announcement.
In practical terms, keep meaningful creative decisions and expressive choices in human hands rather than assuming that prompting by itself settles authorship. Copyright questions depend on the work and applicable law; seek qualified advice for a specific dispute or filing.
