You don’t need to play a game before watching its screen adaptation. Start with the kinds of films and shows you already enjoy, then check whether the adaptation makes its characters and stakes clear to newcomers. A close retelling can work, but so can a fresh story set in a game’s world.
Start with the kind of story you want
“Based on a game” does not tell you whether a film or series is a fit. Adaptations range from bleak character drama to family comedy, animation and puzzle-horror. Choose by genre, tone and format first; treat the game connection as context, not a prerequisite.

| If you want… | Try | Why it may work for a newcomer |
|---|---|---|
| Bleak character drama with horror | The Last of Us, Season 1 | Its relationship-focused story gives viewers more to follow than the game’s world and dangers. The Associated Press reported that non-players connected with its themes of grief, hope, parenthood and coming of age, including one viewer drawn in by a relationship-focused episode. The tone is grim, so it is not a neutral starting point for every viewer. Associated Press, March 13, 2023 |
| Dark comedy and retro-futurist world-building | Fallout, Season 1 | The series introduces new characters and a new location in the franchise’s post-apocalyptic world, rather than requiring viewers to know the games’ story. TIME describes that approach as putting fans and newcomers on more equal footing. Expect violent post-apocalyptic material. TIME, April 2024 |
| Expressive animation, action and an emotional ensemble | Arcane | Rotten Tomatoes highlights its combination of 2D and 3D animation and emotionally driven story. Its first season is a useful pick if animation is part of the appeal, not just the game connection. Rotten Tomatoes’ TV guide, December 18, 2025 |
| Claustrophobic, liminal puzzle-horror | Exit 8 | The film turns a game’s repeated corridor and anomaly-spotting rules into cinematic suspense, a clear example of adapting the experience rather than simply filming gameplay. British Film Institute |
| Horror-comedy | Werewolves Within | Rotten Tomatoes describes it as an even-handed horror comedy, making it a more specific tonal match than a general action pick. Rotten Tomatoes’ movie guide |
| Family-oriented action-comedy | Sonic the Hedgehog 3 | Rotten Tomatoes calls it the strongest entry in an amiable series. Check the actual viewer’s age suitability and tolerance for action; the cited guide is not a full content advisory. Rotten Tomatoes’ movie guide |
Check whether the story stands on its own
Look for a clear premise, characters with understandable goals, and stakes that make sense without a glossary of game lore. A story can welcome newcomers while still rewarding fans with familiar settings or references. Fallout uses a new cast and location within an established world; AP’s reporting on The Last of Us describes non-players responding to the relationships and emotional themes.
When a series is known for dense lore, find a spoiler-light review or synopsis that explicitly says whether it works for someone unfamiliar with the franchise. A summary can help explain the setup, but you should not need to study the game’s plot to decide whether to try an adaptation.

- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
Notice what the adaptation changes
Games and screen stories do not have to use the same structure. A linear game with a fixed narrative can lend itself to a close retelling; an open-world role-playing game shaped by player choices may be better served by new characters or a new plot that uses the setting and themes. TIME contrasts the more fixed story of The Last of Us with the flexible world and player choices of Fallout. The British Film Institute’s discussion of Exit 8 offers another route: turn a repeated game mechanic—spotting anomalies in a looping space—into film suspense.
So “faithful” is not the only useful test. Ask whether the screen version preserves something you might enjoy: the characters, atmosphere, themes, visual style or feeling of discovery. It can be a good adaptation without reproducing game events scene by scene.

Use review scores as a dated signal, not a verdict
Rotten Tomatoes separates critics’ Tomatometer scores from audience Popcornmeter scores. They reflect different groups, can change, and cannot predict whether a particular viewer will like a title. The figures below are the season-level snapshots in its guide published December 18, 2025—not permanent ratings.
| Series and season | Tomatometer | Popcornmeter |

A quick decision checklist
- Name your preferred mood. Decide whether you want horror, comedy, animation, family adventure or serious drama.
- Check the newcomer angle. Look for a clear premise and accessible character stakes, especially if the franchise has extensive lore.
- Consider the adaptation’s approach. A close retelling and a new story in a familiar world can both work; decide which sounds more appealing.
- Read scores with their context. Note the season or film, the critic or audience measure, and when the figure was published.
- Check suitability and access separately. The cited reviews are not complete content guides, and availability varies by country and over time; confirm both for the specific viewer and service before choosing.
