Methane rocket fuel usually means liquid methane burned with liquid oxygen (LOX). Compared with LOX and RP-1—a refined, rocket-grade kerosene fuel—methane offers possible advantages for engine reuse and future Mars missions, but it must be stored cryogenically. Neither fuel is best for every rocket: the right choice depends on engine performance, tank and vehicle design, ground operations, and mission needs.
What is methane rocket fuel?
In rocket-engine discussions, “methane” generally means liquid methane (CH4) paired with liquid oxygen as the oxidizer. Rockets need both a fuel and an oxidizer to burn; “methane versus kerosene” is shorthand for comparing LOX/methane and LOX/RP-1 propellant systems, not comparing either fuel alone with a complete propellant combination.

RP-1 is a refined kerosene-based rocket fuel. Ordinary kerosene and RP-1 are related, but they are not interchangeable descriptions when precision matters.
How do methane and RP-1 compare?
| Factor | LOX/liquid methane | LOX/RP-1 |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel storage | Must be kept cold as a cryogenic liquid. Its storage temperature is more manageable than liquid hydrogen’s and broadly closer to LOX’s. NASA’s overview discusses methane’s storage and exploration uses. | Can be stored at ambient temperature, avoiding cryogenic fuel storage and tank-conditioning demands. NASA’s propellant-selection study describes RP-1 storage and reference properties. |
| Engine performance | ESA says its Prometheus methane propellant offers higher performance than kerosene, but that is not a universal numerical comparison. Performance depends on the engine and operating conditions. ESA’s Prometheus page. | There is no same-condition, universal figure establishing a performance winner over methane. Vehicle selection also depends on bulk density and the mission’s delta-v and tank-volume or mass needs. NASA’s study. |
| Density and tank volume | NASA describes methane as denser than liquid hydrogen, which can allow smaller tanks than hydrogen systems. That does not establish smaller tanks than RP-1. NASA’s overview. | NASA’s historical study lists 50.4 lbm/ft3 for RP-1 in its reference data. The figure is study-specific, not a universal value for every grade or vehicle. NASA’s study. |
| Soot, coking, and reuse | ESA cites reduced soot-related issues as a potential advantage for reusable engines; this does not mean methane engines produce no soot or are automatically reusable. ESA’s Prometheus page. | NASA describes how thermal decomposition of kerosene can cause coking in coolant passages, reducing heat transfer and shortening chamber-material life. The issue is not established as equal across all kerosene engines. NASA’s 2016 research summary. |
| Destination fuel production | Methane and oxygen could potentially be made from local resources on Mars, an in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) concept rather than routine operational practice. NASA’s 2015 article. | The sources cited here do not establish an equivalent local-production case for RP-1 on Mars. |
Why are rocket developers interested in methane?
It may help with reusable-engine maintenance
ESA presents reduced soot-related issues as a possible benefit of methane for reusable engines. NASA’s 2016 discussion explains a specific concern with kerosene: thermal decomposition can leave coke in cooling passages, impeding heat transfer and potentially shortening chamber-material life. This supports a maintenance rationale for investigating methane, not a guarantee that every methane engine will be easier to reuse or that all RP-1 engines experience the same coking.

It has potential value for Mars missions
NASA has discussed producing methane propellant and consumable oxygen from the Martian atmosphere. Such local production could reduce the need to transport all propellant from Earth, but it remains an ISRU possibility—not evidence that propellant production on Mars is already routine.
It is being developed for reusable launchers
ESA describes Prometheus as an LOX/methane engine developed in the context of reusable launchers. Its page gives a thrust range of 30% to 110% through electronic regulation. That range is a Prometheus program specification, not a general property of methane engines.

In 2017, ESA said the Prometheus project aimed to reduce engine costs to one tenth of those of Ariane 5’s Vulcain 2. This was an ESA project target, not a cost saving guaranteed by choosing methane.

Does methane outperform kerosene?
There is no universal fuel-only answer. ESA describes Prometheus’s methane propellant as offering higher performance than kerosene, but the available sources do not provide a controlled numerical comparison that applies to every methane and RP-1 engine. Specific impulse varies with engine design, cycle, chamber pressure, mixture ratio, nozzle, and operating conditions.

Vehicle designers must weigh performance against propellant bulk density and the resulting tank volume and mass. NASA’s propellant-selection study frames the choice around the combined characteristics needed to meet a mission’s delta-v and tank constraints—not a single ranking of fuels.
NASA’s historical study lists normal-boiling-point methane at 26.4 lbm/ft3 under its stated tank conditions and RP-1 at 50.4 lbm/ft3, while noting ambient RP-1 storage. Those are reference inputs from that study, not a current universal specification sheet or a direct tank-size comparison for a particular rocket.

What does the flight-history evidence establish?
A NASA technical report published in 2010 said oxygen/methane had not previously been used in flight-qualified engine systems at that time and described a then-limited test and analysis base. That statement is historical, not a current summary of flight heritage. The sources cited here do not establish an exhaustive current list of operational methane vehicles or a same-condition numerical comparison of methane and RP-1 engines.
