Export a Telegram channel’s messages in Telegram Desktop
- Install or open Telegram Desktop. Telegram offers desktop apps for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Sign in and open the channel whose history you want to save.
- Open the channel’s chat menu and select “Export chat history.” Telegram’s support instructions use this route for exporting an individual chat. Depending on the app version and platform, the menu icon or its placement may vary.
- Choose the export settings. Select a date range, output format, destination folder, and the media types and size limits you want, where those options are available. The interface includes categories such as photos, videos, voice and video messages, stickers, GIFs, and files; the controls shown can vary by version.
- Start the export and wait for Telegram Desktop to save the files to the displayed download path. Allow enough free space for the messages and media you selected.
- Open and check the result. Confirm that the oldest expected messages are present and that the selected media has been exported before relying on the archive.
Telegram’s support answer says that a newly logged-in Desktop session may require a 24-hour wait before export, or that you can confirm the export from another device to begin downloading sooner. This guidance dates to 2019; follow the prompt currently shown in your app.

Choose HTML or JSON

Telegram says exported conversations can be viewed offline and can include photos and other media. The exact contents depend on the options you select.

Export all cloud chats instead
If you want a broader export rather than one channel, Telegram’s support instructions give this route in Telegram Desktop: Settings > Advanced > Export Telegram Data. Review the available chat, media, format, and destination choices before starting; the settings shown may vary by app version.

Check whether the export is complete enough to keep
Do not assume that a successful export automatically contains every message you expect. In an open Telegram Desktop issue updated in September 2026, a user reported that older channel messages visible on Android were missing from Desktop and its export. The report concerned Telegram Desktop 7.2.9 and Android 12.10.4; it is an individual report, not evidence that exports are generally incomplete.
For a channel archive you need to preserve, compare the oldest expected message on Desktop with another device before exporting. Afterward, inspect the exported archive and media folders. Saving a second copy to a separate drive can help protect files you did export, but it cannot restore messages absent from the export.

Know what a Telegram export does not cover
Telegram distinguishes synced cloud chats from Secret Chats. Cloud chats sync across devices, while Secret Chats are device-specific. Telegram’s FAQ says logging out preserves cloud messages but loses Secret Chats and their messages; do not treat the Desktop channel or cloud-chat export as a backup of Secret Chats. Telegram describes its cloud-chat approach this way: “Telegram disables default system backups and provides all users with an integrated security-focused backup solution in the form of Cloud Chats.”
