Publishers can use Google’s nosnippet directive to prevent a page’s text from appearing in Search snippets and to prevent its content from being used as direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, while the page may remain eligible for ordinary Search results. The trade-off: Google requires a page to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to qualify as a supporting link in an AI Overview, so this opt-out also rules out that placement.
Which control should you use?
Google’s controls differ in scope. Choose based on whether you want to block an entire page, withhold only certain passages, or limit the amount of text Google can show or use.

| Control | Scope and effect | Ordinary Search visibility | AI Overview implications |
|---|---|---|---|
nosnippet or max-snippet:0 |
Whole page; suppresses text snippets. Google documents the two as equivalent. | The page may still appear as a regular Search result. | Prevents direct-input use and makes the page ineligible as an AI Overview supporting link because it is not snippet-eligible. Google’s AI feature guidance and robots meta tag specification. |
Positive max-snippet:[number] |
Whole page; caps textual snippet length rather than eliminating snippets. | Does not itself remove the page from Search results. | Limits how much page content can be used as direct input, but does not guarantee a complete opt-out. The limit may not apply where separate permission has been granted, such as through certain in-page structured data or a license agreement. Google’s snippet controls. |
data-nosnippet |
Selected text; marks portions of a page that should not appear in text snippets. | Other eligible page content remains available for snippets. | Useful for withholding particular passages, not the clearest choice for blocking an entire page from AI Overviews. Google’s snippet controls. |
noindex |
Whole page; tells Google not to show the page in Search results. | Removes ordinary Search visibility if Google processes the directive. | Not a way to opt out of AI Overview input while keeping Search visibility; an indexed page is required for supporting-link eligibility. Google’s robots meta tag specification and AI feature guidance. |
How to block a whole page without deindexing it
Add Google’s page-level directive to the page’s HTML:
<meta name="googlebot" content="nosnippet">
Alternatively, send X-Robots-Tag: nosnippet in the HTTP response. The header can be useful for non-HTML resources or when the rule is managed server-side. Google’s specification describes the effect as: “Do not show a text snippet or video preview in the search results for this page.” The same directive prevents the page’s content from being used as direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to qualify as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. With nosnippet, you can retain potential eligibility for a standard result, but not for that AI supporting-link placement. Google Search Central: AI features and your website.
How to apply the control and check it
- Choose the page or resource. Use the HTML meta tag for an HTML page, or the
X-Robots-Tagresponse header when you need server-side control or are handling a non-HTML file. - Deploy the intended rule. For a full page-level opt-out, use
nosnippet(ormax-snippet:0). If you use multiple directives, check for conflicts: Google says the more restrictive applicable rule takes precedence. Robots meta tag specifications. - Check what Google received. Use URL Inspection in Search Console to confirm that Googlebot can see the intended directive on the page. Google Search Console URL Inspection tool.
- Allow time for processing. Google says changes can take several days to several months to be processed, depending on how often it determines the page should be refreshed. You can request a recrawl, but Google does not guarantee indexing or serving. Request a recrawl of URLs.
Why Google-Extended is not the right control
Google distinguishes Search crawling controls for Googlebot from Google-Extended, which relates to training and grounding in certain other Google systems. To control whether Search may use a page as direct input for AI Overviews or AI Mode, Google points publishers to Search preview controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet, not Google-Extended.
