MCX, or the Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited, is an Indian exchange where participants trade standardized commodity derivative contracts—not a shop where retail customers ordinarily buy physical commodities. MCX provides the trading venue; its wholly owned subsidiary, MCX Clearing Corporation Limited (MCXCCL), clears and settles trades, manages collateral and risk, and acts as the central counterparty. Whether a contract involves physical delivery depends on that contract’s terms.
What is MCX?
MCX began operations in November 2003 and operates under the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) regulatory framework, according to its About Us page. It facilitates online trading in commodity derivatives, which are contracts whose value is linked to an underlying commodity or an index based on commodity contracts.

MCX lists contracts across bullion, industrial metals, energy and agricultural commodities, as well as indices constituted from those contracts. That is a broad description of its market, not a complete or guaranteed-current list of available contracts. For the exchange’s stated role and market overview, see MCX About Us.

The following is a high-level explanation of the trade lifecycle. The exact process, obligations and deadlines depend on the contract and current exchange rules.
- Choose a contract. A participant selects a permitted commodity derivative, reviewing what it tracks and its contract specifications.
- Submit an order through a member or broker. Participants access exchange trading through an exchange member or broker; they do not ordinarily purchase the underlying commodity from MCX itself.
- The exchange provides the trading venue. Orders are traded on MCX’s platform under the exchange’s rules.
- The clearing corporation handles the trade’s obligations. MCXCCL clears and settles exchange trades, manages collateral and risk, and serves as central counterparty. This infrastructure role is not a guarantee against market losses.
- The position is closed or handled under its contract terms. Depending on the instrument and its rules, a position may be closed before expiry, financially settled, or subject to a delivery procedure. Do not assume one outcome applies to every contract.
MCX describes MCXCCL’s clearing, settlement, collateral and risk-management responsibilities on its About Us page. This overview does not specify order-matching rules, margin formulas or every settlement step; check current exchange rules and the relevant contract specifications for those details.
Futures, options and physical delivery are different questions
Futures and options
Futures and options are distinct types of derivatives, with different contractual payoff structures. MCX says it was the first Indian exchange to introduce commodity options. Its FAQ distinguishes options on commodity futures from commodity futures and describes option expiry procedures for options launched from February 1, 2022 onward, including automatic exercise of in-the-money options unless a contrary instruction is given, while out-of-the-money options expire worthless. These rules are instrument-specific and can change; consult the current FAQ and contract terms rather than treating this as a trading instruction.
Delivery depends on the contract
MCX says deliveries take place at approved warehouses and designated delivery centres specified in the relevant commodity contract. Its delivery department follows a predefined schedule. Some contract positions may have delivery obligations; others may be financially settled or closed beforehand. The exchange’s Delivery page and FAQ are starting points, but the contract specification is what sets the applicable delivery process.

What should you check before comparing MCX contracts?
There is no single set of terms that applies across every commodity derivative. Use the current official specifications for the contract you are considering, and compare the attributes that determine what the contract represents and what happens at expiry:
- Underlying commodity or index.
- Contract size and quotation unit.
- Expiry date and applicable settlement process.
- Whether delivery is permitted or required, and the relevant delivery centre and quality terms.
- Liquidity, margin requirements and price limits, using current information rather than assumptions based on another contract.
These details can differ by contract and may change. The MCX Delivery page explains the delivery framework; consult current specifications and rules for the exact obligations. This article does not give current margin, trading-hour, lot-size, fee, tax or eligibility figures.
