A green ring around someone’s profile photo on a Story, or a Close Friends label or other green marker on supported content, indicates that it was shared with that account’s Close Friends audience. The marker helps distinguish a restricted-audience share from content shared more broadly. Instagram expanded the feature to feed posts and Reels in November 2023, with a green star used for qualifying posts and Reels, according to TechCrunch’s report on the expansion.

Which content can be shared with Close Friends?
Instagram’s Help Center wording, as quoted by Social Media Today, names posts, Notes, Reels, and Stories. The feature therefore extends beyond Stories: the same Close Friends list can be used for several content formats, although the exact audience controls and visual indicators can differ by format.
Can someone tell if you add or remove them?
Instagram says people are not notified when an account adds or removes them from its Close Friends list, according to the Help Center wording quoted by Social Media Today. The list is controlled by the account owner, and membership changes are silent; a person may only infer their status from seeing or no longer seeing Close Friends content.
Can other Close Friends see your likes or comments?
On a Close Friends Reel, other members can see your username and interaction if you like, comment on, or share it, according to Instagram Help Center text quoted by Social Media Today. This statement is specific to Reels; it should not be assumed to describe visibility for every Close Friends format or interaction.
How private is Close Friends?
Close Friends narrows the audience Instagram serves the content to; it is not a guarantee of secrecy. Share only things you would be comfortable with a recipient preserving or repeating.
