Are PFPs, profile photos, and avatars different?
They often refer to the same account-image feature, but platforms choose their own terminology. “PFP” is common shorthand in online conversation; X uses “profile photo,” and Discord uses “avatar.” The words do not establish a universal platform standard for appearance, file requirements, or privacy.
Do profile picture rules vary by platform?
Yes. Image dimensions, accepted file types, upload limits, animation support, and visibility settings are service-specific. For example, X recommends a 400 × 400-pixel image, accepts JPG, GIF, or PNG, and sets a 2 MB maximum for profile-photo uploads. X also says animated GIFs are not supported for profile or header images. These are X-specific instructions, not universal PFP requirements; consult the platform’s current help page before uploading.

Discord’s profile customization documentation says Nitro subscribers can upload animated GIFs as profile avatars. Facebook’s help page says a current profile picture is public and describes where its thumbnail may appear. Check Facebook’s live guidance for current privacy details before relying on it.
Can a PFP prove who owns an account?
No. A picture can affect how viewers interpret an account, but it does not verify who controls it. Do not use another person’s identifying image to make an account appear to belong to them. X’s authenticity policy prohibits deceptive impersonation and gives stolen or AI-generated profile photos used to create a deceptive fake identity as examples of disallowed conduct. That policy applies to X; other services set and enforce their own rules.
