A data center is a physical facility that houses computers and related equipment to store, process, and deliver information. It can be a closet, a room, or a purpose-built building—not just a vast warehouse, and not the same thing as a cloud service. Data centers run websites, business applications, online storage, and services such as search, email, and document tools.
What is inside a data center?
The core equipment is computing hardware, connected and supported so it can handle workloads reliably. Google describes a data center as “a facility with many computers that store and process large amounts of information.” The definition is broad: a U.S. congressional hearing document citing the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative includes a closet, room, floor, or building used to store, manage, and disseminate information.

- Servers run software and process requests, calculations, and other workloads.
- Storage devices retain files, databases, and other information.
- Network equipment connects servers with one another and with users or other systems.
- Power and cooling systems help keep equipment running within operating conditions. Sites commonly use backup power, such as uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and generators, to help manage utility interruptions.
- Security and communications systems help control physical access and connect the facility to networks.
The exact design varies by facility. Redundant equipment and maintenance arrangements also differ; not every data center has the same systems or level of resilience.

When someone opens a website or uses an online service, their device sends a request over a network. Data-center servers run the software that handles the request, storage systems provide or save information, and network equipment carries data to and from the relevant systems. Power, cooling, and physical security support the equipment behind those interactions.

- 【Effortless Setup】 Network Rack includes hardware, a comprehensive manual, mounting hole drilling template and an online assembly video to simplify setup
People may use data centers without knowing where they are or managing their hardware. For example, Google identifies Gmail, Docs, and Search as services that use its data centers. The facility is the physical infrastructure; the service is what a person or organization accesses through it.
What are data centers used for?
Data centers provide the computing and storage capacity behind many digital services. Common uses include:

How do on-premises, colocation, and cloud differ?
These terms describe different ways to own, house, or access data-center infrastructure. The distinctions matter because they affect who buys the hardware, who operates the facility, and how much infrastructure work the customer takes on.

| Model | Who owns or manages the infrastructure? | What the customer typically handles |
|---|---|---|
| On-premises | The organization owns and operates its facility and equipment. | Setup, staffing, maintenance, and direct infrastructure decisions. This can offer control and customization, but requires ongoing operational work. |
| Colocation | The customer owns its servers and racks; a facility provider rents space and typically supplies services such as security, cooling, and network bandwidth. | Choosing a location and capacity, managing the customer-owned equipment, and understanding the division of service responsibilities and recurring costs. |
| Cloud | A provider manages the underlying infrastructure and offers access through services. | Selecting and managing the services used, rather than purchasing and maintaining all of the underlying hardware. |
There is no universally best model. A decision depends on how much control an organization needs, its ability to operate infrastructure, workload requirements, location constraints, cost structure, and resilience needs.
What do data-center tiers mean for reliability?
A commonly used infrastructure framework is the Uptime Institute’s four-tier classification, as summarized by AWS. The tiers describe infrastructure capabilities; they are not guarantees that a service will never go down, nor do they measure every operational risk.

| Tier | Infrastructure description |
|---|---|
| Tier I | Basic capacity |
| Tier II | Redundant capacity |
| Tier III | Concurrent maintainability |
| Tier IV | Isolated and redundant systems intended to support fault tolerance |
Actual availability also depends on how systems are designed, operated, maintained, and secured, as well as on networking and other factors outside a tier label. A classification should therefore be treated as one part of an infrastructure comparison, not as a complete prediction of a service’s uptime.

Why is data-center electricity use drawing attention?
Servers and cooling require substantial, continuous power, making data-center energy demand a planning issue for utilities and policymakers. A 2025 update by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, reported by the U.S. Department of Energy, estimates data centers could use 11.8% of total U.S. electricity by 2030; its modeled scenarios range from 9.5% to 15.3%. These are projections, not measured future consumption. DOE notes that the model uses projected equipment shipments and does not directly account for potential growth in grid or on-site energy supply.
For context, DOE reports that data centers accounted for 1.9% of U.S. annual electricity consumption in 2018 and 4.4% in 2023. A 2024 report projected a 2028 share of 6.7% to 12%; that range is a projection from that report, not a current measurement. Facility power and cooling approaches vary with site, workload, and grid conditions, so no one energy source or cooling technology applies everywhere.
