An old Android phone can navigate without cell service if it still supports a suitable app, can access location services, and has enough storage for maps downloaded before you leave. It can be a better fit than buying a separate GPS when you already own a working phone and its offline maps support your route. That is a use-case choice, not proof that phones outperform dedicated devices on battery life, accuracy, visibility, or durability.
What you need for an old phone to navigate offline
- A compatible app: Google Maps, Organic Maps and OsmAnd offer offline map functions, but support different activities and routing features.
- Downloaded map data: Save the region before departure, then inspect the map and planned route while you still have connectivity.
- Working location capability: Offline maps remove the need for a data connection to view map information; they do not fix a phone whose location hardware or software is not working.
- Enough storage and power: Check available storage and the condition of the battery. Extended navigation may call for a charging plan.
Offline does not mean every online feature remains available. The app’s route type, downloaded coverage and map freshness all matter.

Choose an app that fits the route
| App | Offline capabilities described by its publisher | Map-update information | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Maps | Offline driving directions when the route stays within downloaded map coverage. | Downloaded maps must be updated before expiration. When connected to Wi-Fi, Google Maps tries to update maps expiring in 15 days or less. | Offline transit, cycling and walking directions are unavailable. Offline driving also lacks traffic information and alternate routes. Google Maps Help |
| Organic Maps | Its Google Play listing describes offline search and voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation for driving, walking, hiking and cycling, plus route import and recording. | The listing says map data is updated every two weeks. | These are developer-provided product statements, not independent tests. The listing reports an update date of September 29, 2026. Organic Maps on Google Play |
| OsmAnd | Its site describes offline regional maps, foot and hiking paths, bicycle and pedestrian navigation modes, and local GPX trip recording. Contour lines and hill-shading are available through an additional plugin. | OsmAnd says maps update monthly, with optional hourly updates through OsmAnd Live. | Features and map coverage should be checked for the specific region and activity. How to prepare Google Maps before losing service
- Connect to the internet and sign in. Open Google Maps on the Android phone while online.
- Download the area. Open the desired place or go to the Offline maps section, select the map area, and download it. Google says offline areas can be stored on internal storage or an SD card. On Android 6.0 or newer, an SD card used for maps must be configured as portable storage.
- Check route coverage. Confirm the full driving route falls inside the saved area. If it extends beyond that area, Google Maps may not provide offline driving directions for the whole journey.
- Check for map updates. Update the saved area before its expiration, ideally while connected and before setting off.
- Test the setup. With connectivity unavailable or disabled, check that the downloaded area opens and that the planned route can be displayed. Do this before relying on it in an unfamiliar place.
Google Maps is not a complete offline replacement for its online service: its current help page lists no offline transit, cycling or walking directions, and says offline driving has no traffic information or alternate routes. Google’s offline map instructions and limitations

Prepare Organic Maps or OsmAnd for walking, cycling or driving
Both apps describe broader offline activity support than Google Maps’ offline driving directions. Their feature descriptions do not guarantee that every path, road or route is mapped in your destination, so verify the actual region and route in the app before leaving.

- Inspect the map at useful zoom levels. Check the roads, trails or paths relevant to your trip, not just the destination marker.
- Set and review the route. Choose the intended activity mode and ensure the route uses mapped coverage throughout.
- Check freshness and storage. Organic Maps says it updates map data every two weeks; OsmAnd describes monthly map updates and optional hourly updates through OsmAnd Live. Download updates before departure if the maps are stale or coverage has changed.
When a phone is a better fit—and when a dedicated GPS may be
An old phone can be a better fit if you already own a compatible device, its battery and location function are usable, and an app’s offline maps meet the needs of your route. Apps may also offer offline search, turn-by-turn guidance or activity-specific map modes, depending on which one you choose.
A dedicated GPS may suit a trip better if its particular hardware or activity-specific functions matter more than the phone’s app flexibility. The available product information does not establish a general winner for accuracy, battery endurance, ruggedness, screen visibility or cost. Compare the devices against the actual conditions rather than assuming either category is superior.

| What to compare | Question to answer before the trip |
|---|---|
| Route and map coverage | Does the offline map cover the full route, and does the app support the activity—driving, cycling, hiking or walking? |
| Map detail and freshness | Are the roads or trails you need shown, and when was the regional map last updated? |
| Battery and charging | Can the device last for the planned navigation session, and is charging or backup power available? |
| Visibility and mounting | Will the screen be readable in the expected conditions, and can the device be positioned safely and securely? |
| Exposure and device role | Can the device handle expected weather or impact, and do you need the phone available for calls or other uses? |
| Setup and storage | Can you install the app, download the required region and keep enough space free? |
Plan for battery use and charging
Navigation can keep the screen and location services in use for long stretches, so assess the phone’s battery condition and expected time away from charging. A power bank is optional, not a requirement; if you use one, verify that its output and cable match the old phone’s charging connector. No particular power bank has been evaluated here.
