How to Transfer Files From a Samsung Galaxy to a Mac

For selected files, start with a data-capable USB cable and MTP file-transfer mode. If Finder does not show the Galaxy, try a compatible Mac MTP app; use Smart Switch for device backups.

To copy selected files, connect your unlocked Galaxy to your Mac with a data-capable USB cable, approve the connection on the phone, and select Transferring files or MTP in its USB notification. Samsung documents copying files through Finder, but the phone may not appear there on every Mac setup. If it does not, try a compatible Mac app that supports Android MTP, such as OpenMTP. For a full device backup, use Samsung Smart Switch instead.

Choose the transfer method that fits the job

What you need to do Best-fit method What to know
Copy a few photos, videos, or documents USB and MTP Use Finder if it exposes the phone; otherwise use a compatible Mac MTP app.
Make a device backup or restore content to a Galaxy Samsung Smart Switch Transfer scope depends on the connected devices; it is not a general Mac file browser.
Move files without connecting the phone directly to the Mac External USB storage or supported SD card Requires compatible phone storage support, connectors, and a format both devices can use.
Send files wirelessly Quick Share/AirDrop, if supported Availability depends on the specific Galaxy model, software, region, and rollout.

Copy selected files over USB

Samsung’s documented procedure uses Finder, but Android file access on a Mac can depend on MTP support and setup. Google’s general Android transfer guide describes desktop procedures for Windows and Chromebook rather than a native Mac Finder workflow. If Finder does not show the Galaxy, use a current MTP utility compatible with your macOS version.

  1. Check the cable and ports. Use a cable that supports data, not just charging, and make sure its connectors fit both devices. Samsung notes that some USB cables cannot transfer files.
  2. Connect and unlock the phone. Approve any access prompt that appears on the Galaxy.
  3. Set the USB connection to file transfer. Open the phone’s USB notification and choose Transferring files or MTP. The exact label may vary by model and software version.
  4. Open Finder and look for the Galaxy under Devices. If it appears, select it and drag the files you want to a folder on the Mac.
  5. If Finder does not expose the files, try an MTP app. OpenMTP is one Mac option; check the project’s current download source and compatibility before installing it. Samsung’s Finder instructions do not guarantee Finder visibility on every Mac and Android setup.
  6. Verify the copy before disconnecting. Open a small sample at its destination, then eject the phone or storage in macOS before unplugging it.

Back up a Galaxy with Smart Switch

Use Smart Switch when you want a computer backup or plan to restore supported content to a Galaxy phone or tablet. Samsung says the content that transfers depends on the connected device; do not assume every app or protected item will be included. Smart Switch is not intended for browsing arbitrary Galaxy files on a Mac, and Samsung says it does not transfer content to an iOS device.

Samsung’s Indonesia compatibility page lists Mac OS X 10.13 or later for its Mac backup/restore application. This is a regional support listing, so check Samsung’s current requirements for your region and the version you intend to install.

Some secure or encrypted app data may not transfer. Samsung’s UK backup guide, updated June 19, 2026, specifically cautions that data such as WhatsApp chats may be excluded.

Use external storage as a bridge

Samsung documents copying files from the Galaxy’s My Files app to compatible external storage, such as a USB OTG flash drive or supported SD card. This is useful when direct Mac MTP access is unavailable or you prefer not to connect the phone and computer together.

Check compatibility before relying on wireless sharing

Google announced Quick Share interoperability with AirDrop for supported Android phones, initially with Pixel and with expansion to partners including Samsung planned during 2026. That announcement does not establish that every Galaxy model can currently send files to every Mac. Check the exact phone model, software version, region, and Quick Share settings before relying on this route.

Fix a Mac that does not recognize the Galaxy

  • Nothing happens when you plug in: Try a known data-capable cable and confirm the connectors fit. A charging-only cable will not expose files.
  • The phone charges but no files appear: Unlock the Galaxy, choose Transferring files or MTP in the USB notification, and approve any connection prompt.
  • The phone still does not appear: Disconnect and reconnect it, restart the phone, and retry the USB file-transfer setting. Samsung recommends these checks for connection problems.
  • Smart Switch does not recognize the device: Follow Samsung’s Smart Switch troubleshooting guidance, which includes reinstalling its device driver for recognition issues.
  • Finder does not show Android storage: Try a current Mac application that supports Android MTP, and verify its compatibility and download source. Finder visibility is not guaranteed across all configurations.

For an important or large transfer, copy a small sample first and confirm that it opens on the Mac before moving the rest.
