High-definition (HD) video commonly means formats such as 720p (1280 × 720 pixels) and 1080-line formats, typically 1920 × 1080 pixels. The number gives the picture’s vertical line count; “p” means progressive scan and “i” means interlaced scan. A label alone does not specify frame rate, picture quality or whether a particular device accepts the signal.
What do 720p, 1080i and 1080p mean?
The number in a video label refers to its vertical picture lines, while the letter describes how those lines are scanned. The width, scan method and frame rate complete the practical description of a format.

| Label | Typical dimensions | Scan method | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | 1280 × 720 | Progressive | Each frame is presented progressively. |
| 1080i | 1920 × 1080 | Interlaced | The picture is represented as alternating fields, not as 1080 complete progressive frames per second. |
| 1080p | 1920 × 1080 | Progressive | Complete progressive frames; the frame rate must be specified separately. |
These are common examples, not an exhaustive list of possible HD formats. SMPTE’s 2011 recommended practice includes 1280 × 720, 1440 × 1080 and 1920 × 1080 picture sizes, with specified HD timings and scan methods. Its examples include 720p at 50 or 60/1.001 Hz and 1080i at 25 or 30/1.001 Hz. Those values describe that practice, rather than every HD signal in every application. SMPTE RP 2047-3:2011

Progressive scan: p
Progressive scan presents the picture as complete frames, scanning the lines in sequence. That is what the “p” denotes in 720p and 1080p.

- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
Interlaced scan: i
Interlaced scan divides a picture into alternating fields. So 1080i does not mean 1080 complete progressive frames every second. The label identifies an interlaced format, and its rate and other signal details need to be stated separately.
Does HD tell you the frame rate?
No. Resolution and scan method do not, by themselves, determine frame rate. For example, the IETF’s 2020 RFC gives video-sharing examples of 1080p and 720p at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 frames per second. Its video-conferencing examples instead list 1080p at 15 or 30 fps and 720p at 30 or 60 fps. These illustrate application-specific choices, not current specifications for any particular streaming service. IETF RFC 8761

UHD formats have more pixels than common HD formats. ITU-T F.780.1 (2023) defines 4K UHD as 3840 × 2160 pixels (2160p) and 8K UHD as 7680 × 4320 pixels (4320p). It compares 8K, at approximately 33 million pixels, with 1920 × 1080 HD, at approximately 2 million pixels. ITU-T F.780.1

More pixels do not guarantee a better-looking result on their own. Source quality, encoding, delivery, display capability and viewing conditions also affect what a viewer sees. The ITU-hosted discussion of EBU material explains that signal sampling and delivery bitrate can affect delivered quality. ITU document D-STG-SG02.11.2-2010
Does an HD label guarantee device compatibility?
No. A display’s native panel dimensions do not establish which input signal timings it accepts. The ITU document reproducing EBU material distinguishes a 1920 × 1080 panel from support for particular 1080p timings. Its discussion concerns historical European “HD-ready” labeling, so it should not be treated as a current universal rule. For a specific television, monitor or other device, check the manufacturer’s current specifications or manual for supported input formats. ITU document D-STG-SG02.11.2-2010

How to compare two HD formats
- Dimensions: Compare width × height, not only the vertical number.
- Scan method: Check whether the signal is progressive or interlaced.
- Rate: Look for the frame or field rate; it is not implied by “720” or “1080.”
- Signal and delivery: For production or playback, consider color and sampling parameters, encoding, bitrate, source quality and device input support.
There is no universally best format based on its label alone. A useful comparison depends on the intended use and the signal, delivery and device parameters that matter for it.
