Google Pixel’s Usage & diagnostics, Call Screen, and Recorder do not all send conversation content to Google by default. They handle different kinds of information: device-performance telemetry, call-screen audio that is not saved to your Google Account in ordinary use, and recordings that remain on your phone unless you enable backup or move them elsewhere. Here’s what each feature does and which settings or actions control it.
How the three Pixel features handle information
| Feature | Information involved | What controls storage or transfer | Where it may be accessed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Usage & diagnostics | Device and app-use telemetry, including battery and thermal performance, sensor and component performance, software stability, app-use frequency, and network connection quality and duration. [Google Pixel Phone Help] | The Usage & diagnostics setting. On Pixel 6 and later running Android 15 and later, Google says the information can be connected with the associated Google Account when the control is enabled. [Google Pixel Phone Help] | The account-connection detail applies to the stated Pixel and Android versions; a general account-access destination is not stated by Google’s page. |
| Call Screen | Audio and transcripts from screened calls. Google says these are not saved to Google Account, Assistant Activity, or Web & App Activity in ordinary use. [Google Phone app Help] | You can turn off saving Call Screen audio in Phone settings. Sharing data with Google is a separate voluntary action. [Google Phone app Help] | Ordinary screening audio and transcripts are not saved to those Google account activity locations. If you voluntarily share data, Google’s help page describes retention and deletion terms. [Google Phone app Help] |
| Recorder | Audio recordings and their transcripts. | Recordings stay on the Pixel unless you enable backup or otherwise share, copy, or save them elsewhere. With backup enabled, recordings are associated with the selected Google Account. [Google Pixel Phone Help] | With backup enabled, recordings can be accessed at recorder.google.com. Usage & diagnostics reports device telemetry
This setting concerns how the device performs, not the content of your calls or Recorder files. With the control on, Google says a Pixel may send information such as battery and thermal performance, sensor and component performance, software stability, how often apps are used, and the quality and duration of network connections. For Pixel 6 and later on Android 15 and later, Google says this information can be connected with the associated Google Account when enabled. [Google Pixel Phone Help]

Turn off Usage & diagnostics
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & Privacy.
- Tap More security & privacy.
- Tap Usage & diagnostics, then turn the setting off. [Google Pixel Phone Help]
Google says turning this setting off does not disable essential services such as Android updates. It also does not control information that individual apps may collect independently. Menu names and paths can vary by software release.

- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
To check the local audio option, open the Phone app, go to its Call Screen settings, and look for Save Call Screen audio. Turn it off if you do not want the phone to save that audio. The control’s availability and exact location can vary by device, region, language, and Android release; consult the current Call Screen help page if you do not see it. [Google Phone app Help]
Sharing is an additional choice, not an automatic consequence of local saving. If you choose to share, Google’s help page sets out its retention and deletion terms. Call Screen availability and options depend on region, language, device, and Android version. [Google Phone app Help]

Recorder keeps recordings on the phone unless you enable backup or move them
Recorder recordings stay on the Pixel and are not synced to your Google Account unless you turn on backup or otherwise share, copy, or save them elsewhere. If you enable Back up & sync, the recordings are associated with the Google Account selected for backup and can be accessed at recorder.google.com. [Google Pixel Phone Help]

Check the Recorder app’s backup setting and account if you want to know whether syncing is enabled. App controls and support can differ by Pixel model and Recorder version, so use the options shown in your app and Google’s current Recorder backup help.
“Transcribe again” may involve Google servers
Google says the optional Transcribe again action may process audio files on Google servers. That caveat applies to that action; it does not mean ordinary recording or transcription always uploads audio. [Google Pixel Phone Help]

- Concerned about device telemetry? Review Settings > Security & Privacy > More security & privacy > Usage & diagnostics.
- Concerned about screened-call audio? In the Phone app’s Call Screen settings, review Save Call Screen audio and make a separate choice about any voluntary sharing.
- Concerned about Recorder syncing? Check Back up & sync and which Google Account is selected; consider separately whether to use Transcribe again.
These settings answer different questions: diagnostics is device telemetry, Call Screen separates local audio saving from voluntary sharing, and Recorder backup determines whether recordings sync to an account. Labels, availability, and exact paths can vary by model, software, app version, language, and region, so verify the options on your phone and in Google’s current help pages.
