On an older or low-power PC, antiX, Bodhi Linux, Lubuntu, or Puppy Linux may feel more responsive than Ubuntu Desktop—but none is universally faster. The difference depends on the computer, desktop environment, applications, and workload. The published specifications below are not same-machine benchmarks, so they help narrow your choices rather than rank performance.
What “outperform Ubuntu” means on an older PC
A lightweight desktop and a smaller selection of applications can leave more of a machine’s limited memory and processing capacity for the task at hand. That can matter on a low-RAM laptop or an older desktop running a browser, office software, or other everyday programs.

It does not establish that a distribution will boot faster, last longer on battery, or outperform Ubuntu in every application. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes, dated April 23, 2026 and last updated August 28, 2026, give a baseline for a comfortable Ubuntu Desktop experience: a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, at least 6 GB of RAM, and 25 GB of free storage. Canonical suggests considering an Ubuntu flavor such as Lubuntu for systems with 2 GB of RAM or more. These are Ubuntu’s stated guidance, not measurements against the four distributions below. | Distribution | Hardware guidance in the cited documentation | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| antiX 26.1 | 256 MB RAM with preconfigured swap is described as possible; 512 MB RAM is recommended; 7.0 GB minimum hard-disk space for installation. | Current antiX project guidance, for a Debian Stable-based, systemd-free and elogind-free live distribution for Intel/AMD x86-compatible systems. |
| Bodhi Linux 7.0.0 | Minimum: 32-bit 500 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 5 GB disk. Recommended: 64-bit 1.0 GHz processor, 768 MB RAM, 10 GB storage. | These figures are for version 7.0.0, not verified requirements for a newer release. The installer works slowly at 512 MB; the project recommends 1 GB or more for installer use. |
| Lubuntu | Current Ubuntu 26.04 notes suggest considering an Ubuntu flavor such as Lubuntu at 2 GB RAM or more; no precise Lubuntu minimum is established here. | Uses LXDE/LXQt and a selection of lightweight applications. The detailed community hardware page is deprecated and unmaintained. |
| Puppy Linux | Not stated on the reviewed official overview page. | The project describes its distributions as typically 1.5 GB or less. That is distribution size, not a RAM, CPU, or performance guarantee. |
The figures are not directly comparable: the projects describe different kinds of requirements, versions, and use conditions. A minimum that permits installation or basic use does not establish comfortable performance in a modern browser or other demanding software.

Choose antiX for very limited memory and broad old-PC compatibility
antiX is aimed at old and new Intel/AMD x86-compatible computers. Its project page identifies antiX-26.1 “Stephen Kapos,” released September 29, 2026, and describes it as based on Debian Stable and free of systemd and elogind. The project says it can run with 256 MB RAM when preconfigured swap is used, recommends 512 MB, and lists 7.0 GB as the minimum hard-disk size for installation. Treat these as project guidance, not a promise that every application will run comfortably. antiX: About
Choose Bodhi for a deliberately minimal desktop, but check the release
Bodhi uses the Moksha desktop. Its wiki describes Bodhi 7.0.0 as based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, while its installation instructions give the hardware figures shown above specifically for that release. The instructions are dated May 1, 2023, so do not assume those numbers apply to a newer Bodhi version. The project says the installer runs slowly with 512 MB RAM and works best above that, ideally with 1 GB or more. Bodhi Linux 7.0.0 installation instructions · Bodhi Linux wiki

The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
Choose Lubuntu if you want a lightweight Ubuntu flavor
Lubuntu is an Ubuntu flavor built around LXDE/LXQt and a selection of lightweight applications. Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 notes suggest an Ubuntu flavor such as Lubuntu for systems with 2 GB RAM or more; that is contextual advice, not a precise Lubuntu minimum. The older Lubuntu hardware figures on the Ubuntu Community Help Wiki should not be treated as current requirements: that page is explicitly deprecated and unmaintained. For a current install, check Lubuntu’s release notes and documentation for the release you plan to use. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes · Deprecated Lubuntu community page

Choose Puppy if a small distribution is a priority
Puppy Linux is a family of distributions for home-user computers, with multiple varieties. Its official overview says they are typically 1.5 GB or less, but does not state a minimum processor or RAM requirement. A small distribution image does not by itself show how well a particular Puppy variety will handle your applications; check the specific variety’s information before installing. Puppy Linux Home

Check these details before replacing Ubuntu
- Architecture: Confirm that the release supports your processor. antiX describes support for Intel/AMD x86-compatible systems; Bodhi’s cited version 7.0.0 figures distinguish 32-bit minimum and 64-bit recommended processors.
- Memory under your actual workload: A system may start with little RAM but struggle when you open a browser with several tabs or run other demanding applications. The stated minimums do not promise a smooth experience for those tasks.
- Storage: Compare installation space with free disk space on your PC. The cited figures differ in what they describe; Puppy’s typical distribution size is not an installation requirement.
- Release age: Bodhi’s hardware numbers refer to 7.0.0, and the detailed Lubuntu community hardware page is deprecated. Check the documentation for the exact release before choosing.
- Peripheral and application needs: Confirm that the distribution and its available software support the devices and programs you rely on.
Try a live USB before installing
A live session lets you check whether a distribution starts and whether essential hardware works before replacing your current system. antiX documents live USB use with or without persistence, and Bodhi recommends using a USB drive for installation media; Bodhi warns that its contents will be erased. Use a flash drive with no important data, and follow the chosen distribution’s instructions for making and booting the media. antiX: About · Bodhi Linux installation instructions
- Back up important files and confirm that you can restore them.
- Make a live or installation USB using the selected distribution’s instructions. Do not use a drive containing files you need.
- Boot the PC from the USB using its startup or boot-device menu.
- In the live session, test the tasks and hardware that matter to you, such as Wi-Fi, sound, display resolution, and your usual applications.
- Install only after confirming that the distribution suits the computer and that you have selected the correct disk and installation options.
How to choose
- Start with antiX if you have an old Intel/AMD-compatible PC and want a distribution whose current project guidance includes very low-memory use.
- Consider Bodhi if you want the Moksha desktop and can confirm that the release you intend to install suits your system.
- Pick Lubuntu if you want an Ubuntu flavor with a lightweight desktop and applications, while checking current release documentation rather than deprecated hardware figures.
- Explore Puppy if a small distribution is important, but do not infer a hardware minimum from its image size.
If your machine has at least 2 GB RAM, Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 guidance makes Lubuntu a contextual option to consider; it does not guarantee that Lubuntu or any alternative will be faster on your particular PC. For very low memory, antiX has the clearest current project guidance among these four, while Bodhi’s low figures are tied to its older 7.0.0 documentation. A live-session trial with your actual workload is a more useful test of fit than comparing minimum specifications alone.
