Those are practical options, not proof that Linux will raise frame rates, extend battery life, or improve cooling on every machine. The original laptop model and five changes behind the personal title are not established, so the guidance below is conditional rather than a claim about one person’s results.
1. Try more Steam games with Proton
Steam Proton is a compatibility tool used by Steam Play to run many Windows games on Linux. It is distinct from a game’s native Linux version: if a native version is available and works well, Steam can run it without Proton. Neither route guarantees that every game will work, so check support for each title rather than assuming the whole library will transfer. Ubuntu explains how to configure Proton and Steam Play.

Compatibility can also depend on the graphics driver. Valve notes that some games need newer drivers than a distribution provides by default. Check Proton’s requirements alongside the game’s compatibility information, especially if a recent release fails to start or renders incorrectly.

Some laptops combine integrated graphics with a discrete NVIDIA GPU. On supported NVIDIA Optimus systems, the integrated GPU can handle lighter work to save power, while the NVIDIA GPU can provide more graphics performance at greater power use. An on-demand mode can render selected applications on the discrete GPU. Which modes are available depends on the laptop, driver, and Linux distribution. Ubuntu documents its own graphics-mode controls. On a compatible Ubuntu system, its guidance includes selecting nvidia or on-demand with prime-select. These are Ubuntu-specific instructions, not universal commands for every Linux distribution. Follow the steps for your installed release and driver in Ubuntu’s dedicated-GPU guide.
Confirm which GPU is active
Before diagnosing poor game performance, check whether the game is using the intended GPU. Ubuntu’s guide describes querying the current graphics mode and using nvidia-smi to inspect NVIDIA GPU activity. These checks can show whether the discrete GPU is engaged; they do not establish a frame-rate improvement.

3. Keep integrated graphics for lighter use
Running on integrated graphics can be a sensible choice for browsing, writing, or other light tasks when the laptop supports switching modes. It can reduce power use compared with running the discrete GPU continuously, while discrete-only operation favors graphics performance and consumes more power. On-demand rendering offers a middle ground where supported. These are configuration tradeoffs, not a guarantee of a particular battery-life gain.
4. Check driver compatibility before troubleshooting a game
A game that fails under Proton may have a compatibility problem, but graphics drivers are another possible cause. Valve’s requirements warn that some titles need newer graphics drivers, and its Steam Linux Runtime notes identify older proprietary NVIDIA drivers as a potential source of Proton or runtime issues. Read the Steam Linux Runtime known issues for context; an older driver is a possibility to investigate, not a diagnosis that applies to every failure.

When you troubleshoot, record the distribution and release, GPU model, driver version, game, and whether it runs natively or through Proton. Those details help distinguish a game-specific issue from a driver or GPU-selection problem. Avoid relying on an old minimum driver number as current advice: requirements can change with game and software updates.

A bootable USB lets you try Ubuntu’s desktop before committing to an installation. Ubuntu’s tutorial explains how to start from USB and use the desktop without making changes to the PC. This gives you a chance to check whether the display, input devices, wireless connection, and general workflow suit your machine, though a live session does not guarantee that every game or driver will work exactly as it would after installation.

- Prepare a USB flash drive for the Ubuntu installation media. Ubuntu’s 2024 tutorial for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS recommends a drive of 12 GB or larger.
- Boot the laptop from the USB using its boot menu or firmware settings, then choose the option to try Ubuntu rather than install it.
- Explore the desktop and check the hardware and tasks that matter to you. If you decide to install, back up important files first; Ubuntu’s installation guide warns that installation changes can affect the machine.

Linux offers useful ways to approach an older laptop: run compatible Steam games, choose a graphics mode where supported, investigate driver issues, and test a desktop without installing it first. Whether those options translate into better gaming on a specific machine depends on its hardware, distribution, drivers, and the games you play. No benchmark or measured result is established for the unnamed laptop behind the original title, so claims about faster frame rates, lower temperatures, longer battery life, or a longer usable lifespan would need actual before-and-after measurements.
