A Brier score measures how closely a bot’s probability forecasts match what happened. It cannot, by itself, show whether the bot made money. Calling a bot “no skill” also requires a stated reference forecast: the meaningful claim is that the bot did not outperform that baseline on a defined set of forecasts, not that one score proves the bot has no value.
What a Brier score tells you
For a binary event, such as whether an asset will rise over a specified period, the Brier score compares the probability forecast with the eventual outcome. Each forecast is paired with an outcome coded 1 if the event occurred and 0 if it did not. The score is the mean squared difference between the forecast probability and the outcome: lower is better for the same cases and event definition.

For example, a forecast of 0.70 for an event that occurs contributes (0.70 − 1)² to the score; if it does not occur, it contributes (0.70 − 0)². Average those squared errors over the evaluated forecasts. Waghmare and Ziegel’s 2026 review describes the binary Brier rule as a strictly proper scoring rule: in expectation, a forecaster minimizes the score by reporting its best probability estimate rather than strategically misstating it. Read the review.
A low raw score is not an absolute verdict. Its interpretation depends on what event was forecast, the event frequency, and the cases included. It is a measure of probabilistic forecast quality, not a direct measure of trading returns.

What “no skill” should mean
Skill is comparative. To claim a bot has no skill, specify a reference forecast and test whether the bot improves on it over the same resolved cases. The reference might be a simple forecast based on the event’s historical frequency, but the audit must state the chosen baseline and how it was generated. Without that, “no skill” is underspecified.
A Brier skill score expresses performance relative to a reference score, but the result depends on the baseline and formulation. The methodological literature also cautions that some skill-score formulations have properties that can encourage hedging or conflict with other desirable verification properties. Murphy’s 1973 analysis and Jolliffe and colleagues’ discussion are relevant to interpreting such scores. Murphy’s paper; Jolliffe and colleagues.

Therefore, a defensible conclusion is narrow: on the specified sample and under the stated scoring method, the bot did or did not beat the specified reference. It does not establish that the bot will perform the same way in another period or market.

- Define the event. State exactly what counts as success, including the market, threshold, and forecast horizon. “The price rises” is not precise unless the reference price and resolution time are fixed.
- Record probabilities before outcomes are known. Preserve each forecast and its timestamp so the audit can establish that the probability preceded resolution. Document how the bot generated probabilities and how missing or revised forecasts are handled.
- Code outcomes consistently. Use 1 for the defined event occurring and 0 otherwise, with a documented resolution rule. Apply the same rule to every forecast.
- Calculate the bot’s raw score. Pair every eligible probability with its resolved outcome, calculate squared error, and average across the sample. Report the number of forecast-outcome pairs.
- Score the reference on the same cases. Use the same event definition, forecasts, and resolved outcomes. A comparison using different cases or rules is not a like-for-like skill comparison.
- Report the relative result and uncertainty. Give the precise skill-score formulation, the reference forecast, and an uncertainty estimate. A small apparent difference should not be treated as conclusive without accounting for sampling uncertainty; forecast-score estimates vary with the sample. See the discussion of sampling uncertainty.
Keep forecast skill separate from profitability
A Brier score evaluates probabilities against outcomes. It does not account for whether the bot traded, how much it traded, execution prices, fees, slippage, or other costs. A bot could make well-calibrated probability forecasts yet use a trading strategy that loses money; conversely, a profitable result over a period does not alone establish strong probability forecasts.

If the audit also makes a profitability claim, report that separately using the bot’s realized trading records and identify the period, positions, returns, fees, slippage, and other included costs. Do not infer profit or loss from the Brier score.

The phrase “I audited my trading bot using a Brier score. It had no skill” needs the underlying audit details to be independently interpretable: the bot and market, forecast horizon, event definition, probability-generation method, sample size, raw score, reference forecast, skill-score formulation, uncertainty treatment, and any separate profitability results. Those particulars are not established here, so no numerical result or personal audit finding can be verified. Without them, the general method is clear, but the specific “no skill” verdict remains unsubstantiated.
