HBM4 is fourth-generation High Bandwidth Memory: stacked DRAM built into the same package as an AI accelerator or other high-performance processor. It is not a processor, graphics card, or plug-in RAM module. Its vertical DRAM stacks, through-silicon vias (TSVs), base die, and 2,048-I/O interface let an accelerator move very large amounts of data in parallel. Manufacturer specifications available through October 13, 2026, report more than 2.8 TB/s or up to 3.3 TB/s per stack, depending on the supplier and implementation.
What HBM4 is—and what it is not
High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) is a specialized DRAM technology for processors that constantly consume data. Instead of placing separate memory chips around a processor and connecting them with comparatively narrow channels, HBM stacks several thin DRAM dies vertically and connects them with thousands of microscopic through-silicon vias. A base or logic die links the stack to the accelerator package.

HBM4 is the fourth generation of that approach. The memory is normally assembled beside an AI accelerator, graphics processor, or high-performance-computing (HPC) processor on an advanced package. A finished accelerator may contain several HBM4 stacks, but the stack itself is only the memory component. It is not a standalone accelerator and cannot be installed in a desktop memory slot.

Vertical stacking shortens the electrical path between memory and compute while providing a very wide interface. The system can transfer many bits at the same time instead of depending on a smaller number of extremely fast serial connections. TSVs carry signals and power through the DRAM layers; the base die organizes the connection to the processor package. Exact die counts, signaling, thermal design, and package layouts vary by product.

How HBM4 moves data
Two numbers describe HBM4 from a reader’s perspective: interface width and pin speed. The manufacturer material reviewed identifies a 2,048-I/O interface for HBM4. Samsung’s preceding-generation comparison identifies 1,024 I/Os for HBM3E, so the wider interface is a major part of the generational bandwidth increase.
Micron describes a 2,048-pin HBM4 interface operating above 11.0 gigabits per second (Gbps) and delivering more than 2.8 terabytes per second (TB/s) per stack. Samsung Semiconductor lists up to 3,300 gigabytes per second (3.3 TB/s) per stack. These are supplier specifications, not a universal result that every HBM4 stack or complete accelerator will achieve.
A simplified data path
- Compute units request data. Matrix engines, vector units, and other accelerator blocks need model weights, activations, gradients, or intermediate results.
- The package routes requests to HBM4. The accelerator’s memory controller communicates with the HBM base die across the package substrate or interposer.
- The stack operates many channels in parallel. TSVs connect the DRAM layers, and the wide I/O interface transfers a large aggregate stream.
- Data returns to the compute fabric. The accelerator processes it and writes results, updated weights, or cache lines back to HBM4.
This parallel path is why HBM can deliver high aggregate bandwidth without requiring each individual signal to run at the highest possible speed. It also explains why packaging, signal integrity, power delivery, and cooling are inseparable from the memory specification.

Capacity is how much data a memory stack can retain. Bandwidth is how much data it can transfer per second. Increasing one does not automatically increase the other.
| Measure | What it answers | HBM4 examples reported by suppliers |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | How much model and working data can reside in the stack | Micron: 36 GB for a 12-high configuration; Samsung: 24–36 GB in 12-layer products and up to 48 GB with planned 16-layer stacking |
| Bandwidth | How quickly data can move between memory and the processor | Micron: more than 2.8 TB/s per stack; Samsung: up to 3.3 TB/s per stack |
| Interface width | How many I/O paths transfer data in parallel | 2,048 I/Os in the HBM4 supplier material reviewed |
| Pin speed | Signaling rate on each I/O path | Micron: above 11.0 Gbps; Samsung: 11.7 Gbps consistent operation and up to 13 Gbps performance |
For example, Micron describes a 12-high HBM4 stack with 36 GB, the same capacity as the HBM3E comparison on its product page, but with more than 2.8 TB/s of bandwidth. A model that fits in that 36-GB space does not necessarily run faster merely because the capacity number is unchanged; the benefit comes when the accelerator can use the additional transfer rate.

Why AI accelerators use HBM4
Training and inference repeatedly stream model parameters, activations, gradients, and routing data through thousands of parallel compute units. If memory cannot supply operands quickly enough, arithmetic units sit idle while waiting. This condition is commonly described as a memory-bandwidth bottleneck.
HBM4 is intended to reduce that bottleneck by putting a very wide, high-throughput memory subsystem next to the accelerator. More available bandwidth can help an accelerator keep matrix engines occupied, support larger batches, and move intermediate tensors without repeatedly fetching them from slower system memory. The actual gain depends on whether the workload is memory-bound, how effectively software schedules transfers, and how much on-chip cache or local memory the processor has.
What HBM4 does not guarantee
- It does not guarantee a particular training time, token rate, or inference latency.
- It does not make a processor’s compute cores faster by itself.
- It does not eliminate communication limits between multiple accelerators.
- It does not ensure that a model fits: capacity remains a separate constraint.
Overall performance also depends on accelerator architecture, number of HBM stacks, package design, memory-controller efficiency, software kernels, workload sparsity, precision, interconnects, and cooling. Supplier bandwidth figures describe the memory component; they are not independent benchmarks of a complete AI system.
How fast is HBM4 compared with HBM3E?
The fairest comparison uses the same stack height and capacity, then separates bandwidth, pin speed, power, thermal behavior, and availability. Supplier comparisons are not identical: Micron compares a 12-high HBM4 stack with 12-high HBM3E, while Samsung’s newsroom also frames its figures against HBM3E.
| Comparison point | HBM4 information available | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | 2,048 I/Os in supplier descriptions | Samsung identifies 1,024 I/Os for the preceding-generation comparison; interface width is not the only determinant of system bandwidth |
| Per-stack bandwidth | Micron: more than 2.8 TB/s; Samsung: up to 3.3 TB/s | Different supplier implementations and claims; do not combine them into one universal rating |
| 12-high capacity | Micron: 36 GB; Samsung: 24–36 GB | Capacity depends on the product configuration and density |
| 16-high capacity | Samsung describes up to 48 GB as a planned expansion | Availability and shipment status must be checked for the specific part |
| Power efficiency | SK hynix reports greater than 40% improvement versus the previous generation | A company-reported comparison; the baseline, workload, and measurement method matter |
A wider bus can increase aggregate throughput, but it also increases package routing and power-delivery demands. A product decision should therefore compare complete accelerator specifications rather than selecting a device from the largest TB/s figure alone.

Samsung Semiconductor lists up to 3,300 GB/s per stack. In a February 12, 2026 announcement, Samsung Electronics reported 11.7 Gbps consistent operation, up to 13 Gbps performance, and 24–36 GB capacities for 12-layer products. The announcement said Samsung had begun HBM4 mass production and shipped commercial products to customers. Samsung also described up to 48 GB with 16-layer stacking as a planned expansion.
SK hynix
On September 12, 2025, SK hynix announced completion of HBM4 development and preparation of a mass-production system. It reported a 2,048-I/O design, operating speed above 10 Gbps, and greater than 40% power-efficiency improvement compared with the previous generation. Joohwan Cho, head of HBM Development at SK hynix, called completion “a new milestone for the industry.” That sentence is a corporate statement, not independent evidence of an industry-wide result.
HBM4 status and availability as of October 2026
Availability is moving from development and sampling toward commercial deployment, but status is supplier- and product-specific. SK hynix’s September 2025 announcement concerned completed development and a prepared mass-production system. Samsung’s February 2026 announcement concerned mass production and customer shipments. Micron’s current product page describes a 36-GB 12-high product and 48-GB 16-high customer samples.
These milestones do not mean a consumer can purchase an HBM4 module or upgrade an existing computer. HBM4 is integrated during accelerator packaging. Manufacturing, sampling, shipment schedules, densities, and specifications can change after the dates above, so system buyers should verify the exact accelerator bill of materials and availability.

Thermal and packaging considerations
HBM4’s proximity to the processor reduces connection distance, but the package must dissipate heat from both the accelerator and stacked memory. Higher signaling rates, more I/O, and additional layers can complicate thermal gradients and assembly. Interposers, substrates, underfill materials, power delivery, memory controllers, and cooling hardware all influence the usable result.
For this reason, a memory supplier’s per-stack number cannot be translated directly into a server’s sustained application bandwidth. A system may throttle, reserve bandwidth for refresh and management traffic, or distribute traffic unevenly across stacks. The accelerator’s software stack must also place and schedule data so that the available channels are used efficiently.
How to evaluate an HBM4-based accelerator
- Check total HBM capacity. Add the capacity of all stacks and confirm whether the vendor quotes decimal gigabytes or another convention.
- Check bandwidth per stack and total aggregate bandwidth. Determine whether the stated number is a theoretical peak and whether all stacks can reach it simultaneously.
- Identify the exact HBM4 implementation. Record stack height, density, I/O width, pin speed, and supplier rather than relying on the generation name alone.
- Examine workload behavior. Memory-bound training, large-batch inference, and bandwidth-heavy recommendation models may benefit more than compute-bound workloads.
- Review the rest of the system. Include accelerator compute, on-chip cache, host-to-device links, scale-out interconnects, software support, and cooling.
- Verify delivery status. Distinguish announced development, customer samples, mass production, and shipment of the exact part you need.
Common misconceptions and troubleshooting questions
“HBM4 is just faster ordinary RAM.”
No. It is DRAM, but its stacked construction, TSVs, base die, very wide interface, and package integration make it a different memory subsystem from conventional DIMMs or ordinary graphics-memory packages.
“A 3.3-TB/s stack means my application will run 3.3 times faster.”
No. That is a peak per-stack bandwidth claim from Samsung. Application speed depends on whether memory transfer is the limiting factor and on every other part of the accelerator and software path.
“More HBM4 capacity automatically means more bandwidth.”
No. Capacity and bandwidth are independent attributes. A taller or denser stack can hold more data, while interface width and signaling determine transfer capability.
Best Value
“Can I add HBM4 to my current workstation?”
Normally no. HBM4 is assembled with the accelerator package at manufacture. It is not a retail upgrade stick, replacement card, or generic memory kit.
“Is 8 Gbps the official HBM4 limit?”
SK hynix says the standard operating speed is 8 Gbps and describes its implementation as exceeding that figure. The exact normative wording and scope of the JEDEC standard were not verified in the material available here, so treat 8 Gbps as a cited company description rather than an independently confirmed universal limit.
The practical bottom line
HBM4 matters because AI accelerators increasingly need to feed many parallel compute units without waiting on memory. Its stacked DRAM, TSV connections, base die, and 2,048-I/O interface provide a compact path with very high aggregate throughput. Current supplier claims range from Micron’s more than 2.8 TB/s per stack to Samsung’s up to 3.3 TB/s, with capacities and operating speeds that vary by product.
