Universes Beyond is Wizards of the Coast’s line of officially licensed Magic: The Gathering products built around settings and characters from outside Magic’s original story worlds. The cards use the normal Magic rules; the crossover changes the names, art, flavor and fiction around those rules. To understand any release, separate three questions: what the physical product contains, which formats its cards can enter, and whether an equivalent release exists on MTG Arena or Magic Online.
What is Universes Beyond in MTG?
Universes Beyond is the label for Magic products that bring an outside entertainment property into the Magic card game. Instead of creating a setting from Magic’s own multiverse, Wizards licenses another universe and represents its characters, locations, objects and stories on Magic cards. A card may depict a familiar hero or artifact, but it still has a mana cost, card type, abilities, power and toughness, and rules text interpreted by the Magic Comprehensive Rules.

The practical result is a normal Magic set with an unusual creative source. You can open packs, build decks, cast spells and play Limited games using the same rules as any other Magic release. The crossover is not a separate card game or a rules-light promotional insert. It is a way of choosing the world and presentation for a set of Magic cards.

That description matters because a crossover can be sold through several products, and those products do not necessarily have identical contents or format permissions. A booster set, a Commander deck and a digital adaptation can all use the same licensed setting while serving different purposes.

Universes Beyond versus Universes Within
Universes Beyond is the outside-franchise label. Universes Within is the in-world Magic treatment used for mechanically identical cards that represent the same gameplay concepts without the licensed presentation. Wizards introduced “Through the Omenpaths” as a digital Universes Within approach for selected Universes Beyond sets that otherwise would not be released on its digital platforms. Those digital versions can have different names, art and creative text while retaining the same mechanics as their tabletop counterparts.
That naming distinction is mostly about presentation and distribution, not a new rules engine. A player should still check the individual card and platform rather than assuming that every Beyond card has a one-to-one digital version.
How do crossover sets work?
Wizards supplies the Magic framework: color identity, mana, card types, keywords, timing rules and the deck-building constraints of each format. The licensed property supplies the setting and characters. Set designers then translate recognizable elements into effects that function inside Magic. A character might become a legendary creature, a signature weapon an Equipment, and a location a land or other permanent.

This translation has two consequences for players:
- Familiarity is optional. Knowing the source franchise can make the flavor more enjoyable, but you do not need that knowledge to understand the card’s rules text.
- Theme does not override rules. A card’s printed rules text, mana cost, types and current Oracle wording determine how it plays. The fictional identity does not create exceptions to timing, targeting or deck-construction rules.
Wizards changed the planned lifecycle for new Universes Beyond booster sets in 2025 and later. The stated aim is for those main booster sets to behave more like in-world booster releases: they receive Limited play at launch and contribute to major Constructed formats in proportions appropriate to each format. Aaron Forsythe, Wizards’ vice president of Magic R&D, described the goal this way: “So, from now on, Universes Beyond sets will go through the more typical lifecycle of booster sets, with a lot of Limited play at release and contributions to each Constructed format in ratios appropriate to the size of the format, thus reducing the churn of the larger nonrotating formats.”
That policy is forward-looking. It does not rewrite the legality of older crossover releases, and it applies to the main booster-set content rather than automatically covering every supplemental product sold alongside a set.
Are Universes Beyond cards legal in Standard, Modern and Commander?
The short answer depends on the release date, the product and the exact card. For new Universes Beyond booster sets released in 2025 and later, Wizards announced that the main set is designed for all major Constructed formats, including the usual Standard-to-Eternal spectrum. “Designed for” does not mean a card can never be banned, restricted or otherwise affected by a format announcement.

| What you are checking | What the policy establishes | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Main booster-set cards from a 2025-or-later release | They are intended to contribute to all major Constructed formats, rather than being automatically limited to a direct-to-Modern path. | The current format rules, rotation status where relevant, and any banned-and-restricted announcement for the specific card. |
| Older Universes Beyond releases | The 2024 policy does not retroactively change their legality. | The set’s original legality and the current rules for the format you want to play. |
| Commander decks or other supplemental products | They can have different legality from the associated booster set. New supplemental material may be Eternal legal, while a reprint follows the legality of the reprinted card. | The product-level and card-level entry in the current format rules. |
| A particular card in a particular deck | Legality is determined card by card and format by format, not by the crossover logo alone. | Whether that exact printing or card name is permitted in your deck and event. |
Why “legal in all formats” needs a qualification
Players often use “all formats” as shorthand for the new booster-set policy, but it is too broad when applied to an entire crossover brand. A Commander deck may contain cards intended for multiplayer Commander and other Eternal formats, while a reprinted card’s permission may follow the card’s existing status. A card can also become unavailable in a format after a later ban or restriction. Check the current announcement before entering an event, especially if the deck uses a supplemental product rather than cards opened in the main boosters.

Do Universes Beyond sets come to MTG Arena or Magic Online?
Not necessarily. Tabletop release and digital release are separate availability questions. Wizards’ April 2025 announcement introduced Through the Omenpaths for selected full Universes Beyond sets that would otherwise not come to Magic: The Gathering Arena or Magic Online. The digital cards are mechanically identical to their tabletop counterparts but receive distinct names, artwork and creative treatments.
The announced model was selective, not universal. Wizards cited FINAL FANTASY and Avatar: The Last Airbender as examples coming to Arena and Magic Online, while saying Marvel’s Spider-Man would not. Those examples describe the announcement at that time; they are not a complete, permanent platform list. A later release can use a different digital plan, and a tabletop product can exist without a matching client release.

How to check digital availability before buying
- Identify the exact set, not just the franchise. A booster set, Commander deck and Secret Lair-style product can have different digital treatment.
- Check Wizards’ current announcement or product information for Arena and Magic Online status.
- Confirm whether the digital version is a direct creative adaptation or a Through the Omenpaths Universes Within version with different names and art.
- Verify the client and format you use. Availability on Arena does not automatically imply availability on Magic Online, and neither implies a paper product has the same contents.
Current and upcoming Universes Beyond releases
Wizards’ “Latest MTG Sets & Products” page, checked on October 13, 2026, listed the following dates. Release schedules, names, configurations and availability can change, so treat this as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent calendar.
| Release | Date listed by Wizards | Status in that snapshot |
|---|---|---|
| FINAL FANTASY | June 13, 2025 | Released |
| Marvel’s Spider-Man | September 26, 2025 | Released |
| Avatar: The Last Airbender | November 21, 2025 | Released |
| Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles | March 6, 2026 | Released |
| Marvel Super Heroes | June 26, 2026 | Released |
| The Hobbit | August 14, 2026 | Released |
| Star Trek | November 13, 2026 | Listed as upcoming on October 13, 2026 |
| Marvel: Darkhold Destiny | April 9, 2027 | Listed for a future release on October 13, 2026 |
A date on a product page does not answer whether a release has Play Boosters, Commander decks, a digital version or stock in your region. Those are separate product questions.

| Your goal | Usually the best fit | What to expect | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Draft or open packs casually | Play Booster | Wizards describes Play Boosters as suitable for Draft or opening for fun, with at least one rare-or-higher card and at least one foil in every pack under its general guide. | Pack contents and availability can change for a specific release; use that set’s product page. |
| Collect premium treatments | Collector Booster | Designed around special treatments and premium versions. | It is not automatically the best way to obtain playable cards or to learn the game. |
| Play multiplayer immediately | Commander deck | A ready-to-play multiplayer-oriented deck when the crossover offers one. | Commander products can have different format legality from the main booster set. |
| Learn Magic | Starter Kit | Introductory decks and teaching-oriented contents when offered for that release. | Not every licensed crossover receives a Starter Kit. |
A practical buying sequence
- Name the set and goal. “I want to draft FINAL FANTASY” is a usable specification; “I want a crossover pack” is not.
- Confirm the product exists. Do not assume that every Universes Beyond release has all four product types.
- Check the contents and intended play pattern. Use Play Boosters for Limited or casual opening, a Commander deck for multiplayer, and a Collector Booster when the treatment itself is the priority.
- Check legality for your event. If you are buying a Commander deck or supplemental product, verify the exact cards rather than relying on the set’s marketing label.
- Check tabletop or digital availability. A paper product is not evidence of an Arena or Magic Online release.
- Check current stock and release timing. Product pages and retailer inventory change, particularly around a launch.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every crossover card is legal everywhere
Use the 2025-and-later booster-set policy only for the scope Wizards stated. Older releases and supplemental products require individual checks. Also review current bans and restrictions before playing competitively.
Assuming the franchise name identifies the product
A single license can have a main set, Commander decks, collector products and digital treatments. Their contents, release dates and legality can differ. Record the exact product name when checking rules or ordering cards.
Assuming tabletop means Arena
The Through the Omenpaths model exists precisely because some tabletop sets do not receive a direct digital release. Look for a platform-specific announcement instead of inferring digital availability from a paper launch.
Confusing premium appearance with better play value
Collector Boosters target special treatments. They are appropriate when presentation and collecting are the goal, but they are not a universal substitute for Play Boosters, a Starter Kit or a Commander deck.
Using an old release calendar
Dates, names, configurations and availability are volatile. Recheck the official product page close to purchase or publication, and confirm the format announcement for the exact card you plan to use.
A simple decision framework
Answer these five questions in order:
- What do I want to do? Learn, draft, play Commander, or collect premium versions?
- Which exact crossover? Identify the set rather than the broader Universes Beyond label.
- What does that set actually sell? Verify Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander decks or Starter Kits individually.
- Where will I play? Paper, Arena and Magic Online are separate destinations.
- Is my exact card legal now? Check the format’s current rules and banned-and-restricted list, especially for older or supplemental products.
If you can answer all five, the crossover label stops being confusing: the license tells you the setting, the product tells you what you receive, the platform tells you where you can use it, and the current format rules tell you whether your card can enter the deck.
