For most mixed groups, choose All the Mods 10 (ATM10). It runs on Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge, combines roughly 500 mods with quests and a long endgame, and gives players different ways to contribute. Choose GregTech: New Horizons (GTNH) only if everyone wants an expert-level project lasting months. Choose Create: Astral when the group mainly wants to design factories, trains and automation together and accepts its older Minecraft 1.18.2 Fabric base.

Which pack should your group choose?
Pick ATM10 for a mixed group
ATM10 is the safest default when friends have different interests. Its approximately 500-mod scope means one player can explore, another can build a base, another can automate resource processing and another can follow quests without everyone being forced through one narrow recipe chain. The quest structure gives newcomers direction, while the large endgame leaves long-term goals after the early machines are familiar.
Recommended Free Tools
The trade-off is scale. A pack this large has more menus, dependencies, world-generation effects and performance variables than a focused Create pack. Plan the server before inviting everyone, allocate more memory than a vanilla world and insist that every player installs the exact server pack version.

Pick GTNH for a committed technical team
GTNH is not a casual “add a few machines” pack. It is a large, progressive kitchen-sink pack balanced around GregTech, with expert recipes and technology gates that turn basic resources into a sequence of engineering problems. Roundups consistently position it as an expert choice with months of progression. It works when the group enjoys documentation, planning production chains and accepting that a milestone may take several sessions.
Its Minecraft 1.7.10 foundation is much older than the other leading choices. That age affects available features, visual expectations, launcher workflows and compatibility with modern client-side tools. Choose it for the progression design, not for having the newest Minecraft engine.
Pick Create: Astral for collaborative factories
Create: Astral focuses on the Create mod and factory automation rather than trying to cover every technology category. The appeal in multiplayer is physical: players can lay out belts, shafts, trains and processing lines in the same world and see how each system connects. A quest book provides an entry path for players who have not used Create before.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCreate: Astral is a Fabric pack for Minecraft 1.18.2, so it is not a drop-in alternative to ATM10’s NeoForge 1.21.1 environment. Mods, performance behavior, world generation and troubleshooting steps differ. The pack’s latest listed build is v2.1.5b, dated August 23, 2026, with a server pack bearing the same version.
Consider Direwolf20 only after verifying the release
FTB Presents Direwolf20 can be a lighter automation-oriented middle ground, with Mekanism and Applied Energistics mentioned in roundup descriptions. However, the specific “Direwolf20 26” release cited in some lists was not verified. Search results exposed an old 1.7.10 server archive last updated in 2015 and a separate 1.21 NeoForge entry whose FTB page listed 1.22.0 as latest. Those are not enough to identify one current multiplayer target.

How the three strongest choices differ
| Decision factor | ATM10 | GTNH | Create: Astral |
|---|---|---|---|
| Progression depth | Broad, quest-driven progression with a substantial endgame | Deepest and most restrictive; expert progression measured in months | Focused progression around Create systems and factory projects |
| Group roles | Exploration, building, magic or technology can coexist | Most players need to coordinate around shared technical chains | Designers, logistics planners and builders naturally work together |
| Modernity | Newest listed base: Minecraft 1.21.1 | Old base: Minecraft 1.7.10 | Intermediate base: Minecraft 1.18.2 |
| Loader | NeoForge | Forge | Fabric |
| Server planning | Highest rough RAM recommendation of the three | Lower rough RAM estimate, but complex recipes and long-running automation need monitoring | No RAM figure established; test with your intended player count |
In a simple progression ranking, GTNH is the deepest, ATM10 is broad and quest-led, and Create: Astral is the most builder-focused. That ranking describes design intent, not a promise about enjoyment or frame rate.

ATM10: what to know before starting
Version and files
CurseForge lists ATM10 builds for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. The newest reviewed file is All the Mods 10-8.2, dated September 22, 2026. A server archive is available, but the archive identified in the available listings was ServerFiles-5.1.zip for 1.21.1 rather than the newest 8.2 client build. Treat that mismatch as a reason to verify the server download page immediately before deployment.
Why it suits friends
- Quests offer a shared checklist without requiring every player to follow one exact order.
- The large mod selection supports different specialties, so a player who dislikes complex machines can still explore or build.
- A long endgame gives an established group reasons to keep expanding a base and infrastructure.
Performance expectations
Roundups commonly suggest 10–12 GB for an ATM10 server. This is a rough starting range, not a guarantee or an official requirement. Start with a reasonable view and simulation distance, pre-generate busy regions if your server tools support it, and watch memory and tick time while several players explore in different directions. Adding RAM cannot repair a badly configured Java process, an overloaded CPU or a world containing too many constantly active machines.
Download-count caution
Published ATM10 download totals conflict substantially between roundup articles and the CurseForge project summary. Because those figures were not independently rechecked here, they should not be used as a popularity measurement or as a reason to choose the pack.

GTNH: what makes the challenge different
Current build identification
CurseForge’s file list shows GTNH 2.8.4, dated January 11, 2026, as the newest 1.7.10 Forge release identified for this guide. The FTB wiki displays 2.0.9.0QF4 as a stable build, but that listing appears older. Use the current CurseForge file listing as the reference point, and record the exact file number in your group’s setup notes.
Plan responsibilities before opening the server
- Assign one person to track the pack version and distribute the same launcher profile to everyone.
- Agree whether the group will share one main base or operate several specialized production sites.
- Keep a written list of machines, materials and dependencies so a player’s absence does not halt the entire chain.
- Expect early progress to feel slow compared with ATM10; that pacing is central to the pack rather than a server fault.
RAM and age-related trade-offs
Roundups suggest roughly 6–8 GB for a GTNH server. The estimate is lower than ATM10’s rough range, but it does not make GTNH effortless to host. Long-running factories, chunk-loaded areas and multiple simultaneous bases still require CPU capacity and careful simulation-distance settings. Minecraft 1.7.10 also means that modern launcher or mod assumptions may not apply; follow the pack’s own installation guidance instead of copying settings from a 1.21 pack.
Create: Astral: a focused factory experience
What is included
Create: Astral is a Fabric pack for Minecraft 1.18.2 centered on Create and factory automation. CurseForge lists Create Astral v2.1.5b, dated August 23, 2026, plus a Create Astral Server Pack v2.1.5b. The project’s development repository says client and server packs are built automatically through GitHub Actions, which helps explain why matching artifacts are published separately.
Why multiplayer builders like it
Create systems are easy to understand spatially: a production line has an input, moving parts, processing stages and an output. Two or three players can divide design, construction and logistics without needing every person to learn hundreds of unrelated mods. The quest book gives the group a sequence of projects while leaving room for decorative builds and custom factory layouts.
Know the version gap
Do not combine Create: Astral files with an ATM10 installation. Fabric 1.18.2 and NeoForge 1.21.1 use different loaders and different mod ecosystems. A player joining with the wrong loader, Minecraft version or pack build will usually fail during connection or receive missing-mod errors.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
How to set up a shared modpack world
1. Freeze the target build
- Choose one pack and write down its Minecraft version, loader and pack file number.
- Download the client profile through the pack’s official CurseForge or FTB listing, or through a launcher that points to that listing.
- Download the server pack for the same release. Do not assume a server archive with a similar name is current.
2. Test one client and the server together
- Install the server files in a new directory and follow the included startup instructions.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA when prompted by creating or editing the generated
eula.txtaccording to its terms. - Start the server once, stop it cleanly, and confirm that the expected world, configuration and mod directories were created.
- Launch one client with the exact pack version and connect over the local network or the server’s test address.
3. Add the rest of the group
- Distribute the precise pack version rather than telling players to install “the latest.”
- Keep optional client-only mods separate from the shared server pack.
- Have every player join before building a permanent base, so missing dependencies or Java problems are found early.
Server and client versions must match exactly. The available ATM10 hosting guidance explicitly warns that a server update forces every player to update. The same operational rule is sensible for the other packs: schedule upgrades, back up the world, and announce the new build before restarting.
If you would rather not run the server yourself, Godlike.Host’s modded Minecraft hosting offers one-click modpacks from CurseForge, FTB, Technic and ATLauncher on Forge, Fabric and NeoForge, lets you upload a custom server pack, and includes up to three free backups a day with restore. Confirm that the exact build you froze is available before you commit.
How much RAM does a modpack server need?
The only pack-specific estimates available for this comparison are approximately 10–12 GB for ATM10 and 6–8 GB for GTNH. No reliable figure was established for Create: Astral or Direwolf20. Treat all of these as starting points from roundup coverage rather than guaranteed requirements.
| What changes memory use | Why it matters | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Player count | More entities, chunks and inventories are active at once | Test with the real peak number, not one idle player |
| Exploration distance | New terrain generation loads and retains more chunks | Limit view and simulation distance during early testing |
| Automation | Machines, pipes, farms and item transport can run continuously | Spread large systems and disable abandoned chunk loaders |
| Java allocation | Too little memory causes crashes; too much can increase garbage-collection pauses | Allocate within the pack’s guidance and observe logs and tick time |
| CPU and storage | Fast storage and CPU affect loading and tick completion even when RAM is available | Evaluate tick time, startup and save duration, not RAM alone |
Increase allocation only after confirming that memory pressure is the symptom. A server that has free heap but misses ticks is constrained elsewhere.

The server starts but players time out
Test locally first. If local connections work, check the server address, firewall and port forwarding. If local connections also fail, read the startup log for a failed mod, Java version error or a port already in use. Solve one error at a time and restart from a clean stop.
Severe lag after exploring
Separate network lag from server tick lag by checking whether all players experience delayed actions. Reduce simulation distance, stop unnecessary chunk loaders and inspect newly generated regions. For ATM10, the pack’s scale makes exploration and world generation particularly important test cases; for GTNH, inspect machine networks and long-running processing chains.
A pack update breaks the world
Never update the only copy of a world. Stop the server, make a complete backup, duplicate it for testing and read the pack’s change notes. If players use different builds, roll everyone back to the last known-good version before attempting another migration.
Packs that should not be your default recommendation yet
Some names appear in roundup lists without enough verified detail for a responsible recommendation. Claims about an “All of Create” release with Create 6.0, more than 50 add-ons and a version 1.8 dated May 1, 2026 were not backed by a retrievable page. Enigmatica 9 and FTB Inferno were mentioned only as kitchen-sink options without specifications. FTB Skies is a skyblock pack, so it belongs in a different category from a conventional tech-world recommendation. These may be worth investigating separately, but the available evidence does not establish their current versions, server files or resource needs.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose ATM10 if the group has mixed interests, wants a modern Minecraft base and can support a roughly 10–12 GB server allocation.
- Choose GTNH if every regular player welcomes expert recipes, shared planning and a progression measured in months on Minecraft 1.7.10.
- Choose Create: Astral if the central activity is designing factories and logistics together and Minecraft 1.18.2 Fabric is acceptable.
- Choose Direwolf20 only after verification of the exact current FTB release and matching server pack.
- Delay the start if you cannot agree on one exact build, one backup plan and who will maintain the server.
Bottom line
ATM10 is the best all-around tech modpack for friends in 2026 because it accommodates different play styles and offers a modern, quest-driven 1.21.1 experience. GTNH is the specialist choice for an expert team seeking the deepest challenge, while Create: Astral is the focused choice for collaborative factory builders. Whichever pack you select, lock the version before installation, use the matching server files, size hardware for actual peak activity and back up the world before every update.
