- It fills a different role from heavy axes: mobility and repeated hits instead of slower, weightier attacks.
Katana route reported through maintenance and guest access
- Find the Carl Planter Maintenance Keycard at the location guides call Digsite A.
- Use it to obtain the Arnold Crand Guest Keycard in the recreational bunker’s clubroom.
- Take the Guest Keycard to the katana facility described on the eastern side of the large central lake.
- Use the bunker entrance that matches your current build. Older summaries describe a crack in a rock formation leading through a short cave to an unnatural hole and a Guest Keycard door. A newer summary instead describes using the Rope Gun to descend into a sinkhole.
These directions are not interchangeable guarantees. If the crack-and-hole entrance is absent, do not assume the weapon was removed; the sinkhole route may reflect a later layout.
Other reported katana locations
A second summary places the weapon deep in a defended cave on the northern side of the island, just above the lake. A third places it in the Residential Bunker on the southeastern side, on Level 2, in the centre of a third room on a traditional katana holder. Variations of that description put the holder behind a credenza in a bedroom or in the third apartment.
The Residential Bunker version requires Maintenance and Guest Keycards in the commonly repeated route. One account says all three cards—VIP, Maintenance, and Guest—are needed, but labels that requirement unverified. A Steam commenter reported that the Maintenance card alone failed. The same route lists a Rope Gun, Rebreather, and shovel as prerequisites, with the shovel coming from the Slingshot Cave and the first three main caves completed beforehand.

Because three materially different locations are circulating, use the keycard names and bunker labels as search terms inside your current playthrough, and keep a backup route in mind rather than abandoning the hunt after one entrance fails.

The available location descriptions do not agree, so the acquisition instructions need a qualification.
Conflicting rifle routes
- One guide places the rifle in a Cultist Cave on the east side of the island, near the bottom of the snowy mountain and at the edge of a large lake.
- Another says it is in the same cave as the Golden Armor and requires the Rebreather.
Those descriptions may refer to the same cave using different landmarks, or to different builds. No current-build confirmation is available in the material reviewed. Bring the Rebreather before committing to an underwater cave route, and compare the cave’s landmarks with your map rather than relying on a single compass instruction.
Rifle preparation checklist
- Have the Rebreather available if the cave contains a submerged passage.
- Carry healing supplies and a dependable melee weapon; a firearm hunt can still involve confined combat.
- Record the cave entrance you used so you can return if the weapon is not at the first described room.
Shotgun: powerful, but shovel-gated
The shotgun is the other top ranged recommendation. Its reported pickup is buried, so the shovel is not optional.
Two grave descriptions
- One guide says to follow the beeping signal to a soldier’s grave on the northwest side of the map.

Both descriptions point to a northwest grave, but the visible marker can differ by guide or build. Once you have the shovel, look for the locator signal or purple marker, inspect graves with obvious wooden-cross landmarks, and dig at the marked burial site rather than at an arbitrary patch of ground.
What to do if the grave is not present
- Confirm that you are carrying the shovel, not merely the other cave tools.
- Recheck the northwest area for the purple GPS Locator or beeping signal.
- Look for the wooden cross and soldier-grave context described by the route you are following.
- If none of those landmarks exist, assume the guide is from a different layout and verify the current map before digging elsewhere.
Strong alternatives when the top three are unavailable
Chainsaw
The chainsaw is reported in a recreational facility on the western side of the island. Reaching it requires the shovel to dig into the facility and the Carl Planter Maintenance Keycard to proceed. It is a good alternative for players who prefer very rapid close-range attacks but do not yet have the katana.

Modern Axe
The modern axe route is an overland trip: follow the river south from the starting beach to a pond, then take the trail southwest to a camp. The route does not depend on a bunker keycard in the supplied guide summary, making it a practical target while you are still building your exploration kit.
Firefighter’s Axe
The Firefighter’s Axe is in the bunker opened with the shovel. Search beneath the circular dirt area surrounding the surveying equipment. This gives shovel users a heavy melee option without relying on the katana’s conflicting bunker descriptions.

You want distance and controlled engagements
Prioritize the rifle route and prepare the Rebreather in case the cave description is accurate. Until then, the Crafted Bow provides early ranged capability and the pistol offers a separate offshore objective.
You are still in the opening hours
Do not delay exploration waiting for a firearm. The Tactical Axe, Crafted Spear, Crafted Bow, and Stun Baton cover the immediate progression while you gather rope, duct tape, keycards, and cave equipment.
You are playing cautiously
Use the acquisition order rather than making a single long expedition for one contested weapon. A shovel-first plan unlocks three separate weapon objectives, so an incorrect katana or rifle lead does not consume the entire trip.
How to handle outdated or contradictory guides
