What Is Hammerfell in The Elder Scrolls Lore? Regions, Factions, and History Explained

Hammerfell is the western Tamrielic province and homeland of the Redguards. Its identity was shaped by the destruction of Yokuda, the Ra Gada migration and conquest, settlement around the Alik’r Desert and major ports, rivalry between the Crowns and Forebears, and repeated resistance to outside rule. In the Fourth Era, it is portrayed as politically independent after rejecting Aldmeri territorial demands following the Great War.

What Hammerfell is and why it matters

Hammerfell is both a place and a historical project. The province was established by Yokudan migrants who crossed to Tamriel after their homeland was destroyed. Their descendants, the Redguards, built a new society across deserts, islands, and maritime trade routes. That origin explains why Hammerfell lore combines migration, military conquest, seafaring, commercial cities, and arguments over how much of the old Yokudan order should survive.

The province matters to the wider Elder Scrolls setting because it sits on important western sea lanes and because its people have repeatedly resisted incorporation by larger powers. Imperial administration, local factional politics, piracy, and Aldmeri expansion all meet in Hammerfell. The result is not a single, uniform culture: regional cities, island communities, traditionalist Crowns, and cosmopolitan Forebears can interpret Redguard identity differently while still sharing the same broad homeland.

Hammerfell’s regions and landmarks

Hammerfell’s geography is defined by contrast. The Alik’r is an immense interior desert, while the Iliac Bay and Abecean coasts connect the province to neighboring regions and long-distance commerce. Cities and islands along those routes have often been as politically important as the desert interior.

Region or landmark Role in Hammerfell
Alik’r Desert Hammerfell’s defining interior landscape and one of the province’s most recognizable settings.
Sentinel A major city associated with regional politics and trade.
Hegathe A major city tied to Hammerfell’s political and commercial life.
Stros M’Kai An island port of strategic historical importance, central to trade, piracy, and conflict.
Iliac Bay A maritime zone linking Hammerfell with High Rock and wider Tamrielic commerce.
Abecean coasts Coastal waters that support shipping, trade, and contact with other parts of Tamriel.

The desert should not be treated as the whole province. Hammerfell’s ports and islands create a second identity: outward-looking, commercially connected, and vulnerable to naval warfare. A story set in Sentinel or Hegathe can therefore feel politically different from one set among Alik’r settlements, even when both are recognizably Redguard.

Who lives in Hammerfell?

The Redguards are Hammerfell’s dominant people. Their culture begins with Yokudan ancestry but developed in Tamriel through conquest, adaptation, and contact with neighboring societies. “Redguard” describes a shared people and historical identity, not a single political program. Different communities can disagree about kingship, foreign influence, religion, trade, and the proper balance between inherited custom and practical diplomacy.

Redguard identity is especially tied to memory of displacement. The destruction of Yokuda is not merely an origin story in the background; it explains why migration, survival, military skill, and preservation of tradition recur so often in Hammerfell narratives. The province’s later history repeatedly asks how a people can create a new homeland without losing the institutions and values associated with the old one.

Yokuda, the Ra Gada, and the name Redguard

The destruction of Yokuda

The ancestors of the Redguards came from Yokuda, a homeland whose destruction drove them toward Tamriel. The migration is the first essential chapter in Hammerfell’s history. It gives the province a population with a strong memory of a lost civilization and makes settlement in Tamriel an act of rebuilding rather than simple expansion.

The Ra Gada conquest

Successive warrior waves known as the Ra Gada conquered territory in what became Hammerfell. They established a new Yokudan homeland in Tamriel, and the name “Redguard” ultimately grew from “Ra Gada.” The conquest therefore has two meanings: it was a military campaign that displaced or subordinated existing populations, and it was the foundation of the Redguard homeland recognized in later eras.

Ra Gada history also helps explain why martial achievement carries such weight in Hammerfell’s political imagination. The province was not formed by a single peaceful settlement. It emerged through successive campaigns, regional consolidation, and the creation of institutions capable of governing a new land. Later disputes over legitimacy often invoke different aspects of that inheritance.

The Crowns and Forebears

The Crowns and Forebears are the two most useful lenses for understanding Hammerfell’s internal politics. They represent different relationships to Yokudan history and different ideas about how the province should engage with the wider world. They are not perfectly uniform parties, and the balance between them changes by city and era.

Faction Historical association Political tendency Important qualification
Crowns Older Yokudan royal institutions and traditions. Traditionalist politics that place greater emphasis on inherited royal and cultural structures. Individual Crown-aligned communities and rulers do not behave identically in every period.
Forebears The Ra Gada legacy and the institutions that developed in Tamriel. More cosmopolitan and commercially oriented politics, with greater comfort engaging outside powers and trade networks. “Forebear” is a broad political category, not a guarantee that every member favors the same policy.

Why the division matters

The Crown–Forebear split is not simply a disagreement between two parties in a modern electoral sense. It reflects competing answers to questions about legitimacy: Should authority come primarily from older Yokudan royal traditions, from the conquest and settlement that created Hammerfell in Tamriel, or from the practical needs of cities and traders? The answer can affect alliances, attitudes toward the Empire, and reactions to foreign influence.

Use the categories as a guide rather than a rigid map. A city, dynasty, or individual may cooperate with an opposing faction when trade, security, or regional survival requires it. Treating every Redguard character as an uncomplicated representative of one side erases the local politics that make Hammerfell stories distinctive.

Why Stros M’Kai is so important

Stros M’Kai is an island and port whose location gives it influence far beyond its size. It sits within the maritime world connecting Hammerfell to the Iliac Bay, the Abecean, and the commercial routes of western Tamriel. That position made it valuable for legitimate trade and vulnerable to piracy, naval conflict, and competing claims of control.

The island is also the principal setting for much of The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard. In that game, Stros M’Kai provides a concentrated view of the province’s recurring themes: a Redguard community shaped by seafaring, the pressure of outside powers, and the way local loyalties intersect with larger regional struggles. Its importance in the game is consistent with its broader lore role as a strategic crossroads rather than an isolated scenic location.

When reading Hammerfell history, Stros M’Kai is a useful reminder that the province cannot be understood only through desert geography. Maritime power, port administration, and control of shipping routes are central to its political history.

Hammerfell, the Empire, and the Aldmeri Dominion

Imperial relationships vary by era

Hammerfell’s relationship with the Empire is not fixed. At different points, imperial authority, local factional interests, and the need to defend Redguard territory can pull in different directions. A portrayal that emphasizes imperial administration may show the province as part of a larger political order; another may focus on local rulers and communities that preserve substantial autonomy.

The Crown–Forebear divide often shapes these disagreements. Cosmopolitan and commercially oriented interests may see cooperation with outside powers as useful, while traditionalist institutions may be more suspicious of arrangements that appear to dilute Yokudan-derived authority. Neither response is universal, and the balance changes with circumstances.

The Great War and the separate settlement

In the aftermath of the Great War, Hammerfell resisted Aldmeri territorial demands. Its conflict with the Aldmeri Dominion culminated in a separate post-war settlement associated with the Second Treaty of Stros M’Kai. The province is consequently portrayed in the Fourth Era as sovereign and independent rather than simply accepting the terms imposed on the Empire.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This independence is important because it is both a political fact in the setting and a statement about Redguard identity. Hammerfell’s people are shown defending their own territory and negotiating their own outcome, even when that means standing apart from imperial policy. The episode also explains why Fourth Era accounts often present Hammerfell as a center of resistance to Aldmeri expansion.

Hammerfell across games and historical eras

The province changes depending on the era and the kind of story being told. Comparing portrayals by the same questions helps prevent contradictions that are really differences in scope or period.

Era or game context What to watch for
Second Era, including The Elder Scrolls Online Redguards appear within the Daggerfall Covenant, so Hammerfell is presented through alliance politics and the broader factional conflict of the period.
Third Era, including The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard Stros M’Kai receives focused attention as an island port shaped by trade, piracy, and regional conflict.
Fourth Era, including Skyrim’s historical framing Hammerfell is associated with independence after resisting Aldmeri terms following the Great War.

Map scale also matters. A game may show one city, island, or quest region rather than the full province. Absence from the player’s immediate map does not mean a region has ceased to exist in lore. Likewise, a story centered on one faction should not be read as proof that all of Hammerfell shares that faction’s priorities.

How to read Hammerfell lore without oversimplifying it

  • Separate ancestry from politics: Redguards share Yokudan roots, but that does not make every community politically Crown or every individual committed to the same traditions.
  • Keep desert and coast together: The Alik’r explains the province’s iconic landscape, while ports and islands explain its trade networks and external contacts.
  • Distinguish eras: Second Era alliance structures, Third Era island-focused stories, and Fourth Era independence are different historical frames.
  • Treat faction labels as lenses: Crowns and Forebears clarify broad tendencies, but local alliances and individual choices can cross the apparent divide.
  • Read independence in context: Fourth Era sovereignty follows resistance to Aldmeri demands and a separate settlement; it is not evidence that Hammerfell was always politically separate from every larger power.

  6. After the Great War, Hammerfell is portrayed as independent after resisting Aldmeri territorial demands and reaching a separate settlement associated with the Second Treaty of Stros M’Kai.
